Thanks for this great video! I read Lonesome Dove two years ago now and I was on the verge of tears just listening to you mention Gus. Still feels so immediate and close and real. Definitely one of the greatest reads and reading experiences of my life. I usually read female authors and prefer to read about women. I have no interest in Westerns or America. None of this matters. One of the greatest of all time!
I read it because people said it has similar vibe to East of Eden and it was amazing. Can recommend both books. Loved Clara's character who represents the times that are about to come for America.
I finished this about two weeks ago and I am still thinking about it regularly, and I miss picking it up every day. I put it up there with my other epic favorites like East of Eden and Anna Karenina. Nice review, I was really happy to revisit the book via your video.
I've been reading since the third grade when I discovered the library, but I've never had a favorite book until I read "Lonesome Dove." It's so perfect that I refuse to read its pre-quel or sequel or watch the mini series. Gus is my all time favorite character.
Supporting the reader to experience the internal life and presence of a character is a superpower. Not every author possesses it. Going to get my hands on this literary treasure this week. 100% here for it.
Ordered the book immediately after finishing the video. I’ve enjoyed your videos and have found your reviews of books I’ve also read to be a vocalization of my own thoughts 😅 It’s insane your subscriber count isn’t much much higher
Timely searching reflection as I’m about 1/3 of the way through and enjoying this deep, rich character-driven journey into a new frontier. One of the rare novels that I’m inclined to just absorb and be present with, which is no small feat in the era of attention fragmentation. You’ve earned a new sub, sir.
Jay...another exceptional video and review, this book has been on the radar for some time now I feel like it's going to have to get moved to top spot of the TBR. Thanks as always for the videos ☕📖
I read it for the first time in April this year and I’m not expecting to read anything better in ‘24. A near (if not actual) perfect reading experience.
I appreciate your comments about the Native American portrayal. I read this book with my wife who is Native American, and she expressed this as well. That being said we both loved this book. It’s just one of those things you have to put into context.
@@dannyletcher5873 Yeah you're right. It's all about the context and intent of the writer and what you take away from it as the reader. I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed the book.
Finished the audiobook yesterday! Lee Horsley did an incredible job narrating and elevated the experience more than I could've imagined. One of the best audiobooks of all time. Side note on the TV series- I binged it yesterday after finishing the book and I must say I was a little disappointed. Your analysis is spot on with saying the plot is good BUT the characters are the star of the show- and the series was plot heavy with a fraction of the character magic. Not to mention the casting was off for some. If anyone is considering just watching the series over reading the book, saying you're missing out is an insane understatement. It's two different experiences
Lonesome Dove is the best book I read in 2023 😊 I loved it from the very first sentence to the very last. I instantly entered it into my Hall of Fame All Time Favourites.
It was incredible. It had a good length to it as well so it truly felt like a journey. I looked forward to waking up and reading more of it every morning.
I was about to comment on here about how incredible it is that you are just now reading this, then I heard your accent. Welcome to Texas literature my friend. Make sure to check out Deadman Walk, Comanche Moon, and Streets of Laredo for more Gus and Woodrow adventures. All the movies are great as well. BTW, this book is losely based on real life Texas Ranger Charles Goodnight and his ranching partner Oliver Loving. They founded the Goodnight/Loving trail to herd cattle from Texas to Colorado. Loving was killed by Comanche in New Mexico and Goodnight brought his body back to Texas.
I just happened upon your channel, and coincidentally just finished reading Lonesome Dove about a week ago. Agree with you about how great it is, and why. Along with Gus, one of my favorite characters was Deets - although we didn't get inside his head as much, I just felt safe and secure and happy whenever he was around, doing his thing so competently, like magic. I see what you mean about the Native Americans being "others" rather than given equal treatment as full characters, but I did notice more than once that Gus expressed a form of empathy for them, making various comments along the lines of: This was their land and life and we whites have unfairly come along and messed that up. Additionally, I appreciated that there was some variety in how they were portrayed - not so much from inside their heads, but from the cowboys' and settlers' perspectives, largely villains but also some friendly, or just humans engaging in business dealings, etc.
Yeah all good points! And Deets is one of my favourites too. He's probably the best at his job out of anyone else in that book. He'd be a great friend.
@@PaperbackJourneys Po Campo pretty amazing at his job too. And Dish. And even Call (tho flawed as a person, clearly a leader his crew trusted, and he rarely led them astray). Clara too. Lots of admirable job-doers, as well as the comically (and/or tragically) inept ones. 😊 Such an amazing book!
Nodding my head, going yeah yeah yeah. It really is one of the most beautiful explorations of friendship, failure and the legacy of the Dante-esq horror of colonialism. Big fan of how matter of fact it all is. People eat, sleep, fart, shit, cough, get on with things. It’s not particularly pleasant but it’s just something we all do and manage. Made it feel very human. When violence does break out it’s usually quick, ugly and not that interesting - much like irl.
Larry McMurtry was an amazing writer and Lonesome Dove is one of the best novels ever written, a lot of Fantasy readers can appreciate it as it has that epic journey aspect to it but then they try the next book Streets Of Laredo and are let down because it's not another epic style journey, however Streets Of Laredo and Deadman's Walk are just as brilliantly written (I have no doubt the final book Comanche Moon is as well I just haven't read it yet) they are just different books and all the better for it in the context of the series.
You and I have similar tastes according to what books you love. You should try Pillars of the earth - Ken Follett. If I could only take one book with me on a desert island it would be hard to choose between Micheners Centennial, Kings The Stand or Folletts Pillars of the Earth. Edit: tho I’d prob pick The Stand Oh and you should read The Terror. One year I picked books just on the size and length of them. Read Duma Key and The Terror. I truly don’t know how I feel about the Terror. I loved all the knowledge gained but the supernatural stuff kind of threw me. Would love your opinion.
@@PaperbackJourneysI’m actually working on a half way western book myself. It’s probably not going to be done any time soon but I’d love to hear your opinion once done if you’re interested.
I've read it several times and I'll read it again. That's how much I love it!

Literally just finished it yesterday. It's a complete banger. Can't wait to read more books from this author

My goodness. This isn’t something I’d ever pick up but you’ve sold me from the first time you mentioned it. I must go buy it. 😅
After reading this book, this is by far the best and most accurate review. Reflects my thoughts precisely

I'm excited for you! You've probably made a lot of progress by now haven't you? I hope you're enjoying it.
How did it go?
@@neil3467 Im still getting through it, having a hard time getting into it, just took a break to listen to Uglies😆

Wasn't it a treat? I've had people recommending Lonesome Dove to me for 30+ years. I'm glad I finally got to it.
It was incredible. It had a good length to it as well so it truly felt like a journey. I looked forward to waking up and reading more of it every morning.
Read it on your suggestion back to watch this video now. Thank you I absolutely loved this guy wrencher of a book

So is Deadman Walk and Streets of Laredo.
Lonesome Dove is my favorite book.
You're my kinda person Alice! 🤠
I just finished it. It was entertaining but I'll probably never read his other books. There was enough that i didn't like to put me off them.
Sounds like I really need to read it

Have you read the other books in. The series
No but I really want to. I might do a marathon of the other books next year.
You don't read a lot, do ya?
😂 Not as much as I'd like. 60-70 books per year max usually. This year might be the first I hit 100.
?
Yes...and Blue Duck is a Top-Tier Villain... fantastically written and portrayed by Frederick Forest
Yeah Blue Duck was terrifying.
When I read this many years ago, before any movie or tv had been produced, Charles Bronson was my Blue Duck. FF did well though.
