One really great thing that Union Pacific Railroad did around 1960 when they quit using these Big Boy locomotives was donating 8 of these locomotives to Railroad Museums. As a result many years later Union Pacific was able to select and restore Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy. There were many railroad companies that completely scrapped all of their steam locomotives. As a result all we have is historical pictures of these steam locomotives. There are none of them in museums and none restored. This is true of the New York Central Hudson steam locomotives. There are no examples of the Hudson steam locomotives around today.
In my childhood I climbed all over the Big Boy at the Forney Museum in Denver. It's a stunning machine, and while I've never seen one running in person, it's such a wonderful thing that it's been saved.
@jeffreymartin6369 It is a well established fact that hudsons from the new york central were all scrapped. Other Hudson's are as different from the New York Central Hudsons as a Ford is from a Chevy.
I dreamed of the day when a Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive would be put back into service, always being told that "it will never happen," that they were just "too big" to run on the modern railroad. I followed closely when it was announced that UP4014 was chosen as the candidate for restoration. It seems like only yesterday when work began to extract and move 4014 to the steam locomotive shops, and 2019 was a far-off date of completion. It is a beautiful engine that rolled out of its stall that eventful year; job well done! Now I'm watching the building, new, of the next in the series of PRR T1 4-4-4-4 duplex express passenger locomotives. It is anecdotally the fastest class of steam locomotives ever built. I hope it, the PRR 5550, is done before I am!
I live in Ca and took my son and daughter to the rail museum outside Griffith Park for years 4014 was and still is amazing I often imagined how great it would be to see it on the rails again that was over 40 years ago now my dream has come true I hope it makes it back to California again someday, great job Union Pacific.
Great to see the big steamer back in action! Too bad it lost its service whistle, but this whistle is what suits it the best. I really hope to see 844 again. Especially because next year is the 80th birthday of the living legend.
@@justanotheraviator2357 for 2022, 4014 wore 844's whistle, which is actually 4014’s service whistle during its revenue years. The one on it now is the stock whistle it received when it was placed on display in 1962.
My MTH Premier Big Boy 4012 sounds EXACTLY like 4014. I had real sound recordings of the 2023 4014 (with different whistle installed from the 2019 run, which is what MTH had for the 2019 4014 Big Boy model run). Now the whistle sounds a lot better
Oof good luck turning that beast around, Oakland is more open for Big Boy because Challenger once drove through there a long time ago, plus WYEs are needed for every rail system or a method to turn the trains around if needed
I love your train videos very much. Don't you know how or where to buy a ticket for Union Pacific 844 or the Big Boy trains? I'd like to travel on these trains once.
Can't wait for it to make it to Fremont, NE and Omaha, NE. Does anyone know what route it will take to get to Omaha? I live in Valley and there's a busy mainline that runs thru town
I never expect that 🤣🤣🤣 Your an Doctor in Railroading? But Why Must that shit allways Look like a Diesel ? Why the hell nobody cover they like a Wagon?
Most likely 3-4 hours give or take because it’s literally two engines sharing one boiler (articulated/hinged wheels) i could be wrong though but its my guess because of the massive size and where the water/steam gotta travel, the fire to build the engine up and feeding its oil to burn.
I believe that it is gently warmed up over days with externally generated steam to prevent firebox and boiler wear, and kept in steam for the duration of its excursions. They were originally fired with coal, but this one was successfully converted to oil. The massive firebox must be one giant fire tornado of burning fuel! Tending the fire must take skill to prevent shock cooling or heating of the giant firebox and boiler. UP's original attempts to use oil in the 1940s and '50s were not successful.
The SD70M it carries is to reduce the load when traveling long distance; most of the US isn't equipped to cater steam trains anymore, so carrying a diesel-electric can extend the range quite a bit
Union Pacific has explained the reasoning in a number of videos and interviews with Ed Dickens. 1, It provides the Positive Train Control (PTC) data and systems that then feed that data via cable to the in-cab displays on the 4014. 2, it provides dynamic braking on long, descending grades to cut back on brake shoe wear. The big boy uses custom-made cast-iron brake shoes that are expensive. Far less maintenance and cost when you can slow the train using dynamic braking only. 3, it provides an insurance policy to keep the train moving should the 4014 develop any issues. They can’t risk any delays and blocked main lines. The diesel does NOT provide power the coaches. That power comes from generator cars. You can always see one in the train.

We have one in Dallas! Well, Frisco now.

An absolutely awesome video as always! 👍
Looks like a shiny new paint job. What a magnificent machine.

At 0:24 the beast comes crawling out of his lair.
The best Big Boy footage!
Thank you for sharing such excellent videos with us!
U should ask Ed if u can have a cab ride like u did with 844
Loved the old steam engine. Looks like the scale train I had as a kid.
Looking forward to seeing Big Boy come through Columbus, NE! Very nice video

4014 got his regular whistle back!
I needed just one reason to go get the 4015 as well and here it is.
It makes me happy to see these old engines restored
This girl continues her work with greatness and strength
Boy. Big Boy
The largest of all steam locomotives in the world. One I truly would like to see as a character in part of the Railway Series.
I would like to see it next time!
Reminds me of a quote from "Dune" (1984): "Gods what a monster!" Excellent video BTW
We were fortunate to see this beautiful beast in Benson Arizona a few years ago. Amazing to watch!
10:53 this doesn't do 4014's size justice, you need to be up close and personal to fathom it's size
I actually saw 4014 when it came down to Houston during the summer of 2021. The driving wheels were nearly as tall as I am, and I'm 5' 7"!

Imagine this locomotive at the terminal in San Francisco on a foggy day? 😊

He is an absolute monster...Even the diesels of today tremble in its shadow.
sitting in Council Bluffs right now but you can't get anywhere near it.

It’s $3000, so you better save up.
For $5000 you can get a VIP seat.
Finally put the caboose in!
I was there in Cheyenne several years ago but couldn't get to see the 4014. It was in the maintenance building
Would like to see 844 run t0
Отличные сьемки могучего паровоза Америки!!!❤💯💥💪
Fuel efficiency??who gives two pins! These brutes were made for one purpose - pulling long uphill grades!!
Diesel is for solving a Transportproblem… Steam is Railway!

Amazing 😱
Big boys are unmatched in strength, but lost to fuel efficiency. Badass beasts, but it needed so much coal. Still incredibly awesome.❤
Great film! If I ever got to drive that thing, you'd have to call my physician because I'd most certainly have a four hour woody.
So 4014 was running but where’s the other steam train numbers 844
Probably sitting in the shop. I don't think they would run both unless it's a very special occasion
Oh ok thanks
Why is there always a diesel locomotive behind a steam engine? Is that the address of bunker?
Cheaper to have stand by back up in the consist than to send one out on a break down.
Ist not a fraightdiesel its a frightdiesel 😂
The diesel locomotive provides electricity to the train. It would take more than one to pull a dead Big Boy and its train.
I never expect that 🤣🤣🤣

I have been told it's to save the brakes on the 4014.

Thank you…🤐ughhh though.
Great video
She's a beautiful steam locomotive. How old is this train?
Original build date is 1941. Wikipedia has lots of info on UP No. 4014.
How many whistles does she have

When can we get one in kit form from Amazon?
Not sure about a kit version, but I ordered a real one from them. Not sure how they'll deliver it, but that's not my problem - I have Amazon Prime!
Can i have the cardboard boxes when you have finished with them.@@davekashuba4730
Nice to see big boy actually working instead of just pulling that dumb passenger train.
Too clean and shiny. I like it better in all those old grainy video clips😁😁😉

Poor 4015, forever playing second banana to this magnificent beast.
