Not a rugby fan, but I'm from St Helens (not often I admit that) and it's nice to see the history being kept in the league. The flashy stadium they opened in St Helens feels so vapid and without any sort of soul, not helped by the giant Tesco nextdoor

My team and come here every game, runs through many generations of families in the town and we have hosted Australia here in the past when touring. There is no better atmosphere on game day here and we are proud of our stadium even if many look down on it. The new stand and upgrades are going to be sympathetic to the heritage and we still want to be on top of the pitch as it were. Thanks for coming.😊

I moved down to the south coast in 2017 and only managed a few return trips north that season.... Once a Cas Lad Always a Cas Lad - great video !

Great video as usual pal. I was brought up on rugby league and still love it. Been to Wheldon road many times in the past when my team Oldham were in the super league back when it started in 96/97.
Unfortunately they were relegated that year and our beloved stadium Watershedding ‘much like Castlefords’ was sold and is now a housing estate which is so sad.
It’s taken 27 years but finally the roughyeds are making a comeback with new owners and the fantastic boundary park ground to play at!!
If you are doing any other Rugby League videos then Oldham and its its old ground are steeped in history being one of the founding member clubs.
Thanks again for your time and effort doing these videos, they really are great and you have a natural gift for doing them.👍🙏

Thanks for making this video. Wheldon Road is the last ground in Super League which is proper old school. I haven't been to Wheldon Road myself but I really want to go there before they start knocking stuff down.
Fun fact about Castleford, they hold the record for the longest wait it has taken a team to win their first title. They are currently on a 98-year wait, the NRL equivalent was Cronulla who took 49 years to win their first top flight title.

If we are using grand final as marker for title then correct, however we did finish top of the league in 2017 by 10pts.

Being a Bradford fan i miss the travels to Wheldon Road, back from the days as a Northern fan. Can still remember the old backdrop of now gone Hickson plant. I'll be honest the ground has always been a dump, a bit like our own, shame the new stadium never got off the ground. Look forward to seeing it when its had all the work done.

used to go all the time, haven't been in a few years though. Always stood in the Princess St Stand (before the seats went in). Home and Away support all mixing, never saw any trouble... (although Hull fans could get a bit Lairy) - I'd rather have a 10,000 capacity at 80% full, than a 30,000 capacity at less than 50% full. The only "new" style stadium that I've like was Doncaster's - saw a challenge cup semi final there, and also when Cas were relagated, we went there... it's a modern bowl stadium, but at about a 12,000 capacity, itretained a good atmosphere.

Nah, it's Wheldon Road. A favourite away ground for just about everyone in rugby league, including me. Supporters, that is, not so much the players. Apparently, the changing rooms are very cramped and the crowd is really close to the pitch, so they get the Cas fans' ... umm ... opinions right in the ear for 80 minutes. It is, indeed, rocking when full! You should get there. The new stand will probably put paid to it, but Wheldon Road is probably the only place left in rugby league where the traditional "crossover" can take place at half time, as supporters swap ends. I don't like being behind the sticks myself, but many do.
The railway end used to regularly feature a line of coal trucks high behind the posts and the terrace there. The pitch is below regulation size, but there is no room to expand it. The plans to built a new stadium at Glasshoughton, fell through, as you say. If the wonga was available, the site would lend itself to building a new, bigger, stadium the other way round, running parallel to Wheldon Road, with direct rail access. Now, that would really be "Classy Cas"! What a pity I'm not a billionaire.
In comparing Cas's crowds with the town's population, you also have to remember that Featherstone Rovers and Wakefield holy ghost (or whatever they're called - boo-oo anyway) are both within spitting distance, the corners of "the triangle", which is a major hotbed of rugby league. They grow rhubarb as well as rugby players, too.
The history of the Castle Ford and nearby Pontefract (Pont = bridge) and its strategic importance in many wars, from the Romans to the civil wars is interesting too. Thanks to the remodelling of the waterways in the area in the 18th and 19th centuries, you can't ford anything there nowadays. Stand on Cas Bridge and you'll see why.

Wheldon Road, or downt lane as we call it. Takes some beating for atmosphere, and I know it needs a bit of TLC, but that's what makes it, and as some of your comments have said, it's their favourite away ground, but for us Cas fans, its home, and always will be.

Enjoyed your video 👍 I first visited Wheldon Road as a lad following Hull fc back in 77, I’ve been virtually every season since then, great place and favourite away ground, I always class Cas as my second team and want them to win all games apart from playing Hull fc of course 😉. Just for the record Hull fc moved into the brand new KC Stadium leaving the old Boulevard ground but it has never felt like home to me, give me the old school grounds any day. I’ll be back in Cas next Friday and as always looking forward to it. Great stuff mate.

Another fascinating video. I'm loving that you, as a younger fella, are this invested in history and what is, essentially, urban archeology. I would normally have no interest in rugby clubs but I enjoyed your walk around and talk around. Good to document, by the time you're my age there won't be many places like this left standing, if any. Keep up the good work, interested to see where you land next time!
