Mah...

I've read many times that Pollini at this age was actually superior to the artist he became a few years later--the extremely cautious perfectionist who was actually a bit dull. Now I hear it. In fact, if I didn't know this was Pollini I honestly wouldn't recognize him. His tone is even different, better than later

@@thepianocornertpcAh. You were at the Chopin competition? Look, Pollini was a great pianist. However, when I think to myself "Who would I like to hear playing this piece?" I don't think of Pollini. I'm not the only person who criticized him for being a perfectionist at the expense of expression. If you want flawless playing with beautiful tone and impeccable musicianship then ABM is the pianist. I think Pollini did have an unusually large repertoire. Many pianists with stratospheric reputations didn't actually have large repertoires.

I agree with MarkSmith. I really like his playing at this very young age of 18. Later his playing got dry, cold and computer like. I also heard him play live in Carnegie Hall in 1976. I mention that because some have said live performances were very different from studio recordings.
