Ontario to suspend driver’s licences for convicted car thieves for at least 10 years

- Ontario says it will suspend driver’s licences for at least 10 years for those who have been convicted of stealing a car.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria says those thrice-convicted of auto theft would have their licenses suspended for life.
Sarkaria says the province is also implementing stiffer penalties including a one-year license suspension for those convicted of stunt driving.
Those penalties also increase on second and third convictions.
Sarkaria says a car is stolen every 14 minutes in the province.
Car thefts in Ontario have increased dramatically in recent years.

Take their library cards away also.

Use the biblical law of restitution. If I got payed by the thief double the cars worth I would be less angry and it would be a deterrent to stealing if you had to work it of.

what?...the law in Canada says you can go to prison for up to 10 years for theft over $10,000...what's the point of suspending their license if their in prison? Oh yeah, because this is Canada and they won't go to prison. If the old penalties aren't enforced why would I believe they'll enforced the new ones, they won't.

When they get caught stealing a car, catch and release, illegal firearm, catch and release, those two offenses are more serious than no DL. LOL, our law mentality is entertaining.

They sign them up for prepaid driving test in Ontario then ban the license when they pass.

WTH does that help ? Ten year jail sentence makes a lot more sense , if a newly arrived immigrant ( highly suspect that's the case ) then deportation after sentence is served , we need to bring back chain gangs , make em work while in jail

The problem here is that nobody stopped to say “hold on wait a minute, something ain’t right here” when this was originally suggested. Everyone just went “ohhh yeah that’s a great idea, suspending licenses to car thieves”.

Really, since criminal law is federal there is little to nothing the provinces can do through legislation.

People don't need a licence to drive.. They need a licence when they get pulled over... And if you don't plan to stop, one could sumize they don't need a licence at all.
