I'm pretty sure hardly anyone who buys booster boxes just to open them thinks they're going to break even or pull that one card that makes them a profit. Just cracking packs if you're doing it just to see what you will get isn't bad. On my way to work because I work nights I stopped at a toy store that sells magic the gathering and bought a pack of wilds of eldraine. I pulled out of a $4 pack a $35 doubling season.

At the time...I was super stoked. Sure wish I had that case unopened....it would be worth far more than those cards combined.
sets great but the cost versus value is underwhelming.....i remember when you used to get value from a set now most chase cards might break 25 30 dollars?
Thank you for absolutely dissuading me from purchasing a set booster box. There are at least 12 cards in this set going for over $10 and at least 18 going for over $5, yet with 2 boxes you were unable to get enough of them to make the box worthwhile, even including FOIL treatments, variants and The List cards. It used to be that I could buy a set booster box and be guaranteed at least to get a good portion of the set, but now with all the BS cards that’s not even realistic. Add to that the quality of some of The List cards reprinted with recent sets and it makes total sense that you couldn’t get more than half the value from the second box. I must admit that I am curious to see what the new booster boxes do for the game but I can’t say that I am going to be rushing into buying boxes ever again. I will rush to watch the next Tolarian Community College video though! 😎
I've never had such good value for a booster box before let alone a collector booster box like I did with Ixalan. I pulled a foil neon green mana crypt. Even without it the value was higher than the price of the box for money and value for my decks and trades. Got to say much unlike WOE which is a good set but there was never much gain from the set outside of buying singles. Plus the opening of the boosters in Ixalan are much more fun I found. Commander decks are seriously fun too and again much better than WOE. So I feel like WOC might be onto a good prosperous run for collectors. With so many reprints this year and value for commander pre cons also on the up. Let's hope the momentum carries on through to the next sets and they don't take many steps backwards.
You got lucky...don't forget the whiffs. It always cracks me up when someone hits playing lotto and they suddenly swear by it. Like a 90 year old retiree who finally hits on a slot machine...after years of dumping their life savings into it. HOORAY!!!
@@xzysyndrome not everyone will strike gold but even opening up a bundle I got the green god and cavern of souls. In my play group 2 others got cavern of souls whilst 5 others got 1-2 god cards each, 2 others got a mana crypt each whilst a friend of theirs also got a mana crypt. Heard nothing of the sort with WOE. Only one of or group got lucky. Obviously yes it is a lottery ultimately but it feels like Ixalan had got better value for what you spend across all of the products. Whilst WOE often fell short of value.
Would love to have the dinosaur cards. Be so cool! I not only collect them but planning to make a commander deck with them. Already have a standard (idk if it's the same as modern. Can't remember the difference) deck of dinos.
I would like to give a huge special thanks to the Professor and his crew for all this wonderful and helpful tips and content to help the rest of the TCG community out I just went out and bought my very first GameGenic 133+ XL The Academic I love it I definitely recommend it to everyone ya it was $50 but you get what you pay for. 2 dockside extortionist would have ran you about $140. I have a playset of dockside extortionists...they look and feel just like the real deal...they cost me $4.00 They play just like yours. I guess if you want the prestige...go for it. I just want to play the game I have loved since the early 90's...and not spend hundreds on fucking cardboard.
You know, it used to be when I heard the *cha-ching*, I could look over from what I was doing, read the card quickly and think whether or not the price made sense. Now that each card has a paragraph of text, I can't do that anymore😢
I just bought the JP secret lair and I'm with everybody else on the missed colors and wrong dinos, it's really off-putting. Now I am dying to see the prof's review. Either way I love JP so it was definitely worth it. Now if I could only get my hands on that new commander deck, guess I'll wait.
In europe the prices for the decks spiked at prerelease and are going down since release. Since the financial value of the deck are almost only some inflated first reprints like Akroma´s Will, Decendents´ Path or Apex Altisaur the prices will tank when the release demand from rich dino nerds is satisfied. Even most of the overpriced UB and CMM precons dropped in price after release.@@levirynearson5800
@@levirynearson5800 oh gotcha, for some reason I thought there might be a new one announced with these new cards. I luckily found it for 50 bucks at a local shop in Mid Michigan if you are somehow from that area too lol
So i totally get the whole value vs singles issue - it makes sense because otherwise no one would buy singles and everyone would buy boxes, like how we actually got a developed singles market in thebfirst place; but for someone new - or returning after say 25 years - whats the value of a box for someone trying to develop a collection for deckbuilding? Obviously i do buy singles and i check EDHREC/etc, but i find my best inspiration for fun decks to come from what i pull, especially considering how out of date my knowledge of Magic is (somewhere here there should be at least one question mark: here's a few for flavor ?????)
Do you think that WOTC made the set boosters really bad on purpose this time to help push the new play boosters? This set is really bad, but the collector boosters seem stacked.
I just open cases for the Cards. and i have a good feeling about it not loosing all my money, becouse If i have to sell them one time i get at least some money out of it.
IMO they should of made the jurassic land cards take the Land Spot in the pack, cause in a set booster people average 1-3 jurassic card cards a box, and if you get unfortunate and get 3 lands your not getting anything else forget it, cause thats what happened to me in 2!!! booster box got 3 lands from jurassic park only while my friend got only artifact and creature from jurassic cards from his 2 booster box
...are packs packed differently in different regions? because it looks like the guaranteed rare is either the second or third card in your boosters, but when I buy them where I live, I could swear the rare is always the second-to-last card?
No there are different printing companies. The rares being in front show it is a Japanese box. The rares in back are American or Belgium. Also card stock quality is different between the 3.

Wow you and I had very different boxes. I had $1.3k value out of one set booster and one collector booster box.
Buy long enough...you get a kiss. As they say in Vegas...Get while the getting is good. I opened a case of Kaladesh and got a Mana Vault, a Sword of Fire and Ice, and a Black Vice in Masterpiece. At the time...I was super stoked. Sure wish I had that case unopened....it would be worth far more than those cards combined.
i enjoyed the music alot ! And the occasional sound of a hit
7:52 The music playing here has a distinct Mega Man vibe.
Remember, you buy these for fun to flesh out your collection. Making money off of these is unlikely.
sets great but the cost versus value is underwhelming.....i remember when you used to get value from a set now most chase cards might break 25 30 dollars?
I appreciate that the coolest looking cards outside of the Jurassic ones are all cheap xD
Draft is the only way, can’t wait to draft my box soon
i just got a box and pulled a mana crypt, Chimil the inner sun as a box topper, and a couple more putting me up 200
I got a Box with 2 gods, the walking throne, Lord Wind Grace, Cavern of Souls, 2 basic JP and Ian Malcolm.
i opened a set box, but it didn't pull anything crazy. then, from a prize pack from prerelease, I opened a mana crypt lmao
These videos are the best thanks prof !!
DAMN, that 2nd box... woof!
I like the new basic land art
Tishana's Tidebinder has come a long way since this vid 🌊
and here is me waiting for the secretversary video before the 10% off is over
Lol! Same here
Are American set boosters backwards compared to British? Rares and foils up front?
Those are Japanese American Set boosters are last cards.
The prof had SKA playing. what a legend
Got 2 special guest and and coat in boxtopper so this box was good. Even cavern and 2 dragons myth
So what’s a better purchase route? Draft or set? I’m assuming set if I want those Jurassic park cards?
I love me some 50 cent cards in 5 dollar boosters 😂
Would love to have the dinosaur cards. Be so cool! I not only collect them but planning to make a commander deck with them. Already have a standard (idk if it's the same as modern. Can't remember the difference) deck of dinos.
Perfect world where they're 150, they begin around 170 here...
Amazon delayed my order of booster boxes and I'm kinda glad they did because now I canceled them.
Ill be honest after the first trip to ixalan i was a bit disappointed that we didn't get another Angrath planeswalker in this set.
Thanks professor and GameGenic
I opened 8 packs, and had amazing luck!
Great set, only got back into magic after 2/3 years and pulled a mana crypt in my first of 3 packs.
You killed it on the first box.😂
lol
its worth it for me. i bought 2 boxes and got a dockside extortionist in BOTH OF THEM.
My local game store is selling it at 160 😢
Your just one pack away from a $180 Mana Crypt
The cheapest draft box I could find was $130 and $140 for set. At least at the game shops where I live.
Run. Run as fast as you can...Away.
I will have to compare my pulls with yours. I feel bad because you got so few gods.
You're reminding me more and more of Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor every new video lol.
Ugh I accidentally bought 2 already. Should have told me if it was worth it beforehand
EV for lost has actually gone up after release week
I freaking love the land art of this set
You know, it used to be when I heard the *cha-ching*, I could look over from what I was doing, read the card quickly and think whether or not the price made sense. Now that each card has a paragraph of text, I can't do that anymore😢
Just happy I drafted Ghalta
TAP, TAP, TAP....GONNA MAKE YA TAP, TAP TAAAAAAPP
Dammit, every time I watch one of these I sing that melody to myself for the next week and a half
I just bought the JP secret lair and I'm with everybody else on the missed colors and wrong dinos, it's really off-putting. Now I am dying to see the prof's review. Either way I love JP so it was definitely worth it. Now if I could only get my hands on that new commander deck, guess I'll wait.
New commander deck?
The velociramptor deck that is going for like $80@@Rocknrolljustin
You should also make a threshold if a card goes over the Costa of a booster pack❤
What did the poor house say to the broken house?
Buy shingles!
Prices are surprisingly lower than I expected
IMO they should of made the jurassic land cards take the Land Spot in the pack, cause in a set booster people average 1-3 jurassic card cards a box, and if you get unfortunate and get 3 lands your not getting anything else forget it, cause thats what happened to me in 2!!! booster box got 3 lands from jurassic park only while my friend got only artifact and creature from jurassic cards from his 2 booster box
Man anytime I think about buying packs I should just come back and watch these instead and save myself a bunch of money
Big facts. Proxy all day. Thanks WOTC...I'll just take that for free and be on my way.
Mpreg elephant haunts me everywhere I sew
Man the seeding on the Jurassic World/Park cards are terrible, did that second box have any? Definitely glad I bought my Indominus Rex now.
have you considered livestreaming your pack openings and having a commentary with chat? user engagement then you can still upload the booster box game
gotta love the prof
why is wizards putting the rares to the front? they should be always at the back
...are packs packed differently in different regions? because it looks like the guaranteed rare is either the second or third card in your boosters, but when I buy them where I live, I could swear the rare is always the second-to-last card?
No there are different printing companies. The rares being in front show it is a Japanese box. The rares in back are American or Belgium. Also card stock quality is different between the 3.
I’ve been watching your channel for years now, just wanted to say it finally sank in this year, buy singles, not sealed
3 JP cards per box seems to be the going rate for set boxes.
