Two comments: 1) I started a Ph. D. program in history at the University of Iowa in 1990, during the heart of the “linguistic turn” in historical theory and method which was heavily influenced by French deconstruction. Foucault and, more especially, Derrida. Deconstruction was something you did to texts because of the inadequacies of human language. No one ever talked about deconstructing people. I think most of my secular colleagues there would have found it strange at the time. 2) Isolating from family and friends is part of common sociological (as opposed to theological) definitions of a cult. Is “Christian deconstruction” an online cult?

Interesting point about the cult aspect. Cults almost always promote elitism in that they are the true source of truth and that you have to be part of the cult to have access to it.

I was born in 01 and some of the ZoeGirl songs are so nostalgic. I don't even know exactly where I was hearing them, but they definitely bring back some feels. Also I know who Carman is ;)

If you know someone who is deconstructing who happens to also be going to a watered down seeker-sensitive man-centered mega church, could the advice for them be a simple as "go find a true God-centered church, one that actually has answers to your theological questions and focuses on discipleship."?
This podcast was great in defining deconstruction and the dynamics of those engaging in it, however, I wish the podcast talked more about the root problem at play which I believe is the seeker-sensitive church movement. The man-centered worshiptainment seeker-sensitive churches often have terrible theology and at the very least overlook discipleship and leave starving sheep vulnerable to the wolves. I think "deconstruction" is a symptom of this root problem.

The “no contact” letter thing sounds like Scientology. Cults operate in similar fashion… those folks who are deconstructing can’t handle truth so they flee from it.

Perhaps because of my age, I associate the term “deconstruction” with the philosopher Derrida. But what Alisa says about deconstruction seems quite different from what Derrida said about it.

Instead of "deconstruction" or "reformation," how about "uncovering," in the same sense as the art restorer trying to uncover the original painting, except you're trying to uncover the truth about ultimate reality? You're not aiming toward destroying your faith or strengthening it, which both imply bias, but objectively seeking the truth, while acknowledging that bias cannot be completely done away with.

Should a group that doesn't believe in deconstruction get to define the term? And when you define it as you have, especially "not regarding scripture as the standard," does that eliminate the possibility that there could be healthy deconstruction? When your definition includes a denial of the scriptures, you have overstepped; you have written this book in bad faith. What you are doing is an attempt to block the exits. You are saying Evangelicals have the truth, and escaping Evangelical doctrine is synonymous with denying the scriptures. Please.
The Evangelical movement has all the trappings of a cult. Listen to your dogma with fresh ears. "You must believe these five essentials to be a Christian." Here is another one: "In essentials, unity, in non-essentials, liberty." That means, agree with us or else, at least in the essentials.
Your doctrine implies that justification is according to the content of your head, but Jesus said you are justified or condemned by the content of your heart Matthew 12:35-37.
This is only the beginning of woes, not even the tip of the tip of the iceberg. Evangelical doctrine needs to be flushed and a restoration process needs to begin. We need to get back to the scriptures, because Evangelicals have wandered far away.
Evangelicals are more interested in practicing the Great Commandment than the New Commandment. They are involved in the ministry of death, not the ministry of life 2 Corinthians 3. I am not saying Evangelicals are not saved because of what they believe. It is what is in the heart, not the head. I am not saying that everyone who disagrees with me is going to hell, like the Evangelicals do.
