    Our farm is in Southern Illinois, the pond is probably 50 years old. It is run off as well as spring fed. We use no aeration and have no algae problems. The pond is stocked with bluegills, crappie, small mouth bass and 2 grass carp. Good luck with yours, I hope it all works out for you.

    I did a concrete job for a family that had a pond that was clear enough that you could see to the bottom in the deepest part. They told me their little secret was buying bags of some kind of bug from a pond supply business nearby. They dump the bugs in, they eat all of the algae and gross stuff and then the fish eat the bugs. I was fascinated and I will definitely be doing that if we put a pond in!

      I would be interested to know what they were...I would give it a try! I don't have any fish yet...unless some birds have brought eggs. I will stock it eventually!

    To get rid of algae naturally, get a lot of one year old willow tree sticks. About 2 ft long. Remove all the leaves but 2-3 top ones. Tie the sticks to pieces of wood and let them float. Just make sure bottom half of the sticks is submerged. You want the sticks to grow roots in water column.
    In a week the sticks will start developing roots. As roots grow your water will clear.
    For a small backyard pond I used 20-30 sticks and it took a month to clear a very bad green water. The water become crystal clear.

    The thing about cattails is they invite muskrats. You don’t want muskrats. Dig holes in your banks and collapses your shoreline. Over time,they can dig them out enough to drain your pond. Keep an eye out for them.

    • @CopperheadRoadHomestead
      @CopperheadRoadHomestead  3 года назад

      I’ve heard a lot of negative things about cattails. I may steer clear of them or only have a small section that I allow cattails on.

  • @AaricHale

    I thought that was a really good deal . We got a estimate on digging out the small pond we got and it was around $8000 . You can grow plants on the pond in raft system like in aquaponics . All you need is styrofoam and net cups .

    What I was taught is that placing your pond so that it is facing North to get the north wind, helps keep a constant movement on its surface, thus aerating it. You do not want the water to never move. So I cannot see what is around it, but you may want to clear a bit on the north end of the pond. That is my only aeration suggestion.

    • @CopperheadRoadHomestead
      @CopperheadRoadHomestead  3 года назад +2

      The north side is completely open and I plan on keeping it that way. You think I could plant some trees along the east and west sides? South side?

  • @stedmans4christ

    I'm currently researching how to build a pond and use it mainly as a swimming pool as well...we plan to make an island around a huge tree we have so the roots of this tree will help keep the pond clean. In a crunch...like bug out/crap hit the fan...it could also be filtered for emergency drinking water...the cattails are for only the edges of the pond

    Im in NC and I have had 2 quotes for a 1 acre pond. I elected to keep the dirt for a shooting range instead of paying them to haul it out thinking it would be cheaper. I have 2 natural springs that run in front of my property to fill the pond as do both of my neighbors. The ground already holds water so no extra clay needed. One quote was 38k and the second quote was 28k.......needless to say we are still looking

    • @CopperheadRoadHomestead
      @CopperheadRoadHomestead  3 года назад +1

      The initial quote for this was around 10K. It ended up being cheaper than that, obviously. I definitely wouldn't have had it dug if my quote was that much!

      I was gonna say that same pond here in NC would be at least 10k but wow.. 38k for a 1 acre pond? What part of NC are you located in? That sounds extremely high.

    • @taylorcolt
      @taylorcolt 3 года назад

      The pond in this video is a lot smaller than one acre. Depth, and slope of the banks are play a huge roll in cost. It all comes down to how much dirt is being moved. It is probably going to be bid by the yard and a 1 acre pond, 10' deep with a 4:1 slope is probably going to run you around $40k for a pit type tank on semi flat ground. When you build a dam in a draw type tank (damming up a draw or creek), it will be a totally different type of bid and no one can give you an accurate bid without shooting grade to figure out how much dirt needs to be moved. I'm sure the bids you got were ballpark bids but if someone gives you a hard bid and doesn't shoot grade first... run.

  • @MrBudcampo
    @MrBudcampo 3 года назад +2

    I put a aerator in my pond, it makes it much nicer and the movement looks nice in my opinion. It was around $1000 for one that would work great for your size pond. One of the funnest projects ever!

    Think about putting in a deck or float deck now. Put some blocks in the deep area where you may want it and put a float on the end of a chain. As it fills the float will bring up the chain. Much easier than trying to add later. A deck at the edge can be added easily now or at least the poles

    Just had mine dug also. About the same size, but after the concrete spillway is done I'm gonna have 13,500 in it! Where I live in Arkansas is experiencing new house construction at a huge rate and just getting someone to dedicate themselves to digging a pond was difficult. don't regret is but sounds to me like you got a heck of a deal! Can't wait to pull out some huge hybrid bluegill and black bass. Gooooood eatin right out of the back yard and my kids will be in it daily during the summer and fishing year round. By the way, has anyone noticed the price of store bought catfish fillets!? Very expensive for small frozen fillets and gets more expensive for the big fresh fillets. Me and my family of 4 all love and eat fish quite often and you can't buy bluegill! And, if you've never had whole fried bluegill, you have no idea the pleasure you have missed. Great looking pond. Good luck from Arkansas!

    We had a farm in NJ when I was a kid (late 60’s). It was more of a weekend place but had 4 small ponds. And we constructed the 5th and largest that was about 100’ square. All were spring fed, and required almost no maint, had fish frogs and tadpoles and we swam in a couple of them.
    I suggest keeping the planting to a minimum, let nature rule and add a bit of aeration. Solar fountain or two not much again less is more but on days when the temp and sun soar and there is no wind it will reduce stress on the wildlife.
    Treat for algae if need rake it out if you can get away with it.

    You could grow duckweed in net floats and dry it after harvested and it cleans the water and also provides food for the fish. Dried duckweed is sold for the aquarium fish industry and for feed for livestock. It has a good protein content and as stated before it cleans the water. If you keep it in styrofoam frame net floats and have an aerator, it shouldn't take over the surface since duckweed only prefers still water, hence the floats

    One use for a pond or small body of water that I didn't hear you mention is for breaking horses. On solid ground horses who are new to being broke will buck like wild. If you walk them into the shallow area of a pond, it makes it harder for them to buck because they will also have to fight the water resistance. It also adds a bit of cushion if you should be bucked off the horse.
    Only two questions. How big is the pond? What's the name of the company that did the work?

    Cattails are edible AND medicinal. They are natural water filters and absorb the 'crap' as they grow, which is why you should NEVER eat them, or ANY plant, growing in road ditches or drainage areas where you know unnatural chemicals or products may drain into. Cattails are also the best item I have found for the inside of the tinder nest for fire starting, with rolled cedar bark as the outside. The wet or moist stalks can be used to make many items, including children's doll toys, and the dried stalks are great for kindling and as a substitute for fire wood, although it DOES burn fast. AN INCREDIBLE PLANT!

      @@CopperheadRoadHomestead Cattails are prolific and can be invasive. They are a native species but still have to be controlled. Your decision is... will you harvest enough of them to keep them under control? In a stuff hits the fan scenario, I would think so. Until then, just walk out there every Sat morning, or whenever, and pull you a few handfulls out, compost them, dry/sell/trade, etc. If I had a year round pond, I would definitely get them started.

    More (if it were mine). I would want it to be lined with local stone as much as possible in the main swimming area as much as possible.
    Weary backs understood. 😂 The levy may be just fine with grass, I would look into bamboo or cane, you have some already there I know. From my research bamboo has been the ultimate earthen dam protector. Research specie use. I would research and build a pump filter and aeration system that incorporated natural biofiltration mini ponds. You can grow tons of edible aquatic foods and do seasonal aquaponics as well as filter the water! Research Air Lift water pumps designs. Move water and oxygenate the water at the same time. Very little power to move air versus water and the only moving parts are in the air pump that is safely out of the water.
    Safe for all animals and no water pump impeller damage and failed pumps to dig out and keep clean.

    you could always look at the expense vs efficienty or creating a wetland filter and maybe a biomechanical filter thats more natural so you dont have to do hands on intervention. there is this thing called tube filtration which i have bene playing around in my head and u can just run tubing with all the filtration mechanics thru the tube around the pond, idunno!

      @@CopperheadRoadHomestead - what about taking any stones on your land, hopefully some boulders even and creating a waterfall that can be incorporated into your bio mechanical filter. The pumps can be solar powered and run most of the day. Winter of course will be less but there’s not so much heat to be causing algae growth. I’m just winging it. I have had irrigation only dugouts (a term we use in Alberta, Canada and a pond I’d more of a pleasure thing like you have there), dozens really on my ranch that was at one time 8800 acres in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Some were fed from runoff, several springs and runoff and a few with water drawn from local irrigation ditches. There was a decent pond in the yard we kept clean and the irrigation water out of so there were no leeches!!! Eeeyuucchhhh!!! I have had to swim in water with them, and they really are harmless, but so disgusting!! Haha.
      We did a fish pond for trout recently that was 3 acres. It cost about $300,000 CDN, but was a significant dam for a large valley, a water pumping system from irrigation ditches that would keep the pike, walleye and perch that can exist in the canals, out of the pond (that was expensive , but is built for the future as well) all the area around the pond is landscaped to a degree and there was a cement stone path all the way around the pond. 350 new trees, it was a,project. It actually was fortunate. After building it I injured an old back injury seriously enough for emergency surgery . Couldn’t take care of the place. After all my costs of buying the place and the work done, I profited almost 1 million $$ CDN. I had a few million into it already. It was much more lavish than we ever wanted.
      Now we moved south, have a couple of acres for our main property, a nice 1750 square ft bungalow with large rooms so there are not many, but there’s room to move! It has a walk out basement looking to the east from the mountainside out towards prairie land. Mornings are terrific. We bought the 5 acre plot next door and on it is a pond that’s maybe 1/2 acre. It’s really deep, more than 25ft, I will take my fish finder on there one time. A local grizzly bear and family of black bears, 2 cubs and Momma. There were 3 cubs, but we think the Grizzly got one,,,, life playing out on its own can be a little harsh some times. We leave the pond alone other than when we installed an irrigation system, all electric, that is for fire suppression by keeping the property green in this drought, (I prefer to leave it completely natural, but not with this year’s conditions), and we installed a perimeter sprinkler system with nozzles even on the roof, if things get really close. So far nothing is even in the greater area for us, fingers crossed.
      Sorry, long comment, but we have had many uses. The dugouts were primarily where the cattle came to to drink. When we had fires in our area over the past 58 years I have been around and once they started using buckets under helicopters, Forestry often use one or several of our dugouts or ponds to fill with water. They asked and we said heck yeah!! Foolish not to. We even let them dip from the swimming pond and fish ponds we have had. Better to save the place than worry about a few fish!!
      I hope you get everything you have spoken of out of your pond and more!! I know you can, you have very realistic goals!

It will make swimming or even being around the water unpleasant otherwise. Check your local supplier and target minnows that feed on mosquito larvae. Not sure in your state if moving fish from a body of water to another is legal. Some try to save money by trapping a specific minnow type.

    What a great pond.
    Natural ponds can be kept clean from putting oxygenating plants in it.These plants are either are in the deeper water or in the shallows and produce oxygen which is released into the water from photosynthesis.
    if you have an area clear on the bank where you can access it for swimming seeded with grass that can be cut to keep it a lawn.
    Can you access other ponds locally for free plants as you will need a lot to keep this pond healthy.
    New ponds will always green up with algae in the first summer but this will disappear the next summer when the plants have spread enough.
    In 2-3 years you will probably have to remove 1/3 of the oxygenating weeds or they will gradually fill the whole pond up.
    Try and avoid chemical treatments as it will upset the natural ecosystem and cost a lot for a pond that size.
    Don’t put too many fish in the first year as they will not have any cover from predators & sun.Too many fish make a lot of waste which will make the pond more prone to algae in the summer.
    Keep about half the pond banks clear of tall reeds otherwise they will take over.
    The area where you have some taller reeds & grasses around the pond are important habitats for dragonflies & cover for birds and frogs.
    If your putting lilies in the pond keep the root ball in a sack or secure pot otherwise they will spread like crazy.
    Enjoy and I look forward to seeing how it develops.
    Thank you.

    • @CopperheadRoadHomestead
      @CopperheadRoadHomestead  3 года назад +1

      If you have banks that steep they might cave in...unless you have it supported somehow...ours is just with the dirt and clay from the ground here. The area around the pond would make more of a difference than the slope of the pond itself...I think. It rarely get cold enough here for the ice to get thick enough to skate on...even then, it would make me nervous...I wouldn't want to fall in with the water that cold!

  • @ShaneZettelmier
    @ShaneZettelmier 3 года назад +1

    Give it to her three years to balance out but solar powered stratafires and aerators are easy and if you have electric running a couple of bubblers out there would be easy. If you keep the edges clean and don’t blow your grass in there when you mow it shouldn’t be too bad. You can also put plants in there. Plants compete for those nutrients so algae grows in dirty water with lots of nutrients, if you get the right kind of plants in there it will eat those nutrients and keep your water clean. Plants are the best filters you can get. I’ve been running fish aquariums for decades aunt it’s all about balance. Your fish create waste and that will grow algae or plants, if you get the right kind of plants, after a while they will kind of balance themselves out and grow as fast as they can absorb nutrients and when the water is clean and there aren’t a lot of nutrients, a.k.a. fish poop, They will just grow slower and some will die back, eventually you get a good balance and it will almost take care of itself. I would stay away from the cheaper faster growing plants, they can kind of overrun it and make it a pain to swim in. A lot of plants are much slower growing but stay closer to the ground and don’t need as much light so they don’t fill up all your water space, some will grow closer to the edge. Lily pads are great and will provide a constant source of food and shelter for the fish. They do grow fast but you can just rake and dredge them out and throw them in your fields, they make great soil nutrients as well. There are even edible options probably. Also that Water is going to be very nutrient rich so instead of just letting it drain into nowhere come try to use it on anything you grow. I don’t like chemical options like the blue dye or chemicals to control the plants really, it’s fine if you need them but I think it’s better to study and find people in your area with ponds that naturally balance themselves. I’m sure most of them would let you go in there and dig up a bunch of lilies or other plants to get started so you don’t have to actually go out and buy them, Which can be incredibly expensive, once you get a few established in there they will grow quickly as long as there are nutrients and then slow down when they’ve eaten them all up. Anything to move the surface of the water or air ration is always a good idea, that’s how you get oxygen into the water, it’s not really from the bubbles it’s moving the surface come at your surface to air contact is where all the gases exchange and that’s where 90% of your oxygen comes from, As you get good plant growth in there they will provide oxygen as well. It’s a good size and should be a fun project.
    Another thing, especially if you’re building more ponds it since you’re doing all that digging, which is some of the most expensive part of it, geothermal lines at the bottom of a pond do really well and can save a ton on your electric bill for heating and cooling your house or even a barn, a lot of people don’t want to spend the money on it because it just cost a lot of cash up front to bury those lines but if you’re already digging a six or 8 foot hole then that’s a few thousand dollars worth of your cost out of the way and with rebates and tax write off‘s you can make it pretty comparable to any other heating and cooling system but it will probably cost you half as much to run it.
