Don't know if you've done any self defense training but can I suggest Krav Maga. It's something I considered starting but I've developed problems with hip joints and now other leg problems. I've been putting matters off but I need to see a doctor.
1. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings Always be mindful of your environment, especially when parking overnight. Choose well-lit, populated areas and avoid secluded spots. If possible, research locations beforehand to ensure they are safe and legal for overnight parking. 2. Secure Your Van Invest in good-quality locks for all doors and windows. Consider additional security measures like a steering wheel lock or an alarm system. Keep valuables out of sight. Use curtains, shades, or a cover to block the view inside your van. 3. Have an Emergency Plan Keep a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, and emergency tools like a flashlight and multi-tool easily accessible. Know the nearest hospitals, police stations, and safe havens in the area where you’re staying. Have a plan for how to quickly leave an area if you feel unsafe. Park in a way that allows you to drive away easily. 4. Stay Connected Let someone know your travel plans and check in regularly with family or friends. Keep a charged phone with you at all times. Consider having a backup battery or solar charger for emergencies. 5. Maintain Your Van Regularly check your van’s tires, oil, and other essential systems to avoid breakdowns in remote areas. Carry basic repair tools and know how to use them for minor issues. 6. Be Mindful of Weather Monitor weather forecasts to avoid dangerous conditions like extreme heat, cold, or storms. Equip your van for the climate you’re in, whether that means having ventilation for heat or insulation for cold. 7. Practice Personal Safety Keep personal protection items like pepper spray or a personal alarm accessible. Trust your instincts. If a situation or location feels off, don’t hesitate to move. 8. Be Discreet Avoid drawing attention to yourself or your van. Keep a low profile to reduce the risk of theft or unwanted attention. Be cautious about sharing your location on social media until after you’ve left a spot. 9. Have Backup Funds Keep some emergency cash hidden in your van in case you lose access to your bank accounts or cards. Have a plan for accessing funds or getting help if you’re in a remote area.
