The Hellenic Army was formed in 1828. The term Hellenic, is the endogenous synonym for Greek. The Hellenic Army is the largest of the three branches of the Hellenic Armed Forces, also constituted by the Hellenic Air Force and the Hellenic Navy. The army is commanded by the chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, which in turn is under the command of Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
The Hellenic Army is also the main contributor to, and "lead nation" of, the Balkan Battle Group, a combined-arms rapid-response force under the EU Battlegroup structure.

Hellenic is a lovely word.
Spartans never had grand ambitions to expand their territory as was common practice for all powerful states of the time. Their military was trained to defend the homeland. There were also 2 kings with equal power for balance. The only city without city walls and defended solely by the extremely well trained fighters, it was feared by all in the region. Since the fall of Constantinople and 400 years of occupation by the Ottomans, Greece has had a very tough time to stay whole in a very tough Neighborhood. Always undermanned, under equipped, the Hellenic forces have shown their worth in both world wars and many in between. Never looking for a fight, but with aggressive neighbors at times, it has always been a matter of survival and not just some advantage to be gained. Fighting for your homeland, for your home, your family, always brings out the best soldier in you. The alternative would be catastrophic, extermination, subjugation and humiliation. Everyone of fighting age that I know, would drop everything to defend their homeland, whether at home or abroad. Of course, peaceful settlement is always best, assuming you have two willing parties.

Expansionism was a ‘norm’ in that period of human evolution and all armies acted accordingly. What’s troubling is that Turkey doesn’t seem to have matured beyond those years and is acting according to past normals. Let’s hope that saner heads will prevail.

You had the better army in 1920 with tanks, all of England and France’s modern weaponry, better Geographical position at that time and still lost to a army with just riflemen and horses in a catastrophic way. You also lost in Cyprus. So basically each war you fought against Turkey alone you lost. Your population is 10 million and Turkey population is 85 million. You would be steamrolled in a 1 on 1 war.

@@russiansoldier7938 1919 to 1922 was a war supported by the major powers of the time namely England France and the like. I have never heard about us having tanks on that campaign but whatever. Even so in 1922 when the king was voted back and the prime minister of the time lost his power (he was an ally of England France and the like, while the king was with Germany) they stopped supporting the Greek army and they instead helped the Turks. Simple as that. 1974 Greece didn't send an army to fight because of USA backing the Turks and threatening us. So idk how you think we lost but it was the Greek cypriots who lost their home unfortunately.

An enemy troop mass was never a problem for Greeks, but the lack of resources was it, while we were attacked by others, Italy here, Germany there and then the Ottomans tried to attack us with a completely destroyed Greece and also to massacre the Greeks. What a brave victory. We keep briefly: a great Ottoman Empire needs the help of the even greater Russian power, while the Greeks had a lot to cope with other nations, no matter how often they were attacked, no matter how many died.
The Greek soul knew no fear then and also not today, especially not of death, freedom or death is the principle and with this commitment they still fight today! There is no giving up, no kneeling down, no single power forcing the Greeks to the ground, only God himself can lend a hand if he wants to! Many years have passed and still use the strategies of the ancients, they have even been expanded with even more logical processes. We didn't have the weapons that we have today and yet we are still standing, now I can imagine what the Greek military looks like with thousands of trained Greeks, ready to continue to defend our existence!
Leonidas had a vision, Themistoklis, Perikles, Kolokotronis had this too and they did not die in vain, for this reason we walk upright and straight, not with legs apart like a pasha! These are the differences my friends !!!

In a matter of quality the Greek army its in top ten of the world, i took part many times in different types of exercises with this guys, they are very good in the water and i can say that the navy level of Greeks is almost perfect and the best in Europe but i can say that the Greek pilots are above everyone side by side with the Israelis, I hope will be peace cause the Greeks that I've seen are lethal. They have the biggest power when you are on the field, the have motivation.

Since this video was posted Greece has purchased SPIKE N.L.O.S. systems, 24 Rafales, 7 MH 60 Helo's, 4 Belharra Frigates, 2 Gowind Corvettes , is upgrading all F16's to the "V" version which is most advanced anywhere,
and have recieved from the U.S. EDA program: 1200 M117 IFV's,6 refurbished M60 helo's, 10 CH 47 helo's, 75 AAAVP Amphibious assault vehicles and numerous systems related to fire, control, ECM and a very long list of other related items. As you can see Greece has been very busy upgrading it's defenses over the past 2 years and it is also going to purchase Israeli Iron Dome system as well as the start of it's own Armed Drone/UAV 's and I did miss a few others.
