- Today I'm sharing 5 ideas for decorating your sketchbook. You could also apply any of these to the covers of your notebook and art journal as well. I like to make my sketchbooks colorful and fun, it helps me to stay inspired when using the books.

A few sketchbook cover ideas. I find adding some color and fun designs to the covers helps to keep me inspired. Do you decorate your sketchbooks?

Two weeks ago, I was hospitalized with a new, super rare (and second to the Arthtitis I've had since I was born) autoimmune disease called TTP. I was actually at risk of dying that day, but because I didn't know how long I'd have to be in the waiting room, I brought my sketch books with me. I have been practicing lines and patterns, to strengthen my lineart in general.
So, when it turned out to be serious, and I found out I'd be here much longer term than I originally thought, I had all these art supplies to practice lines, and patterns, and was in need of more ideas. I've been watching a lot of design oriented videos since being here, and although I'm not decorating my sketch books (although I have 3 at home I need to decorate, so I'll be revisiting) these videos you do (this one in particular) is so helpful to me right now!
I know this is a lot of words for "thank you", but I really wanted you to know how much I mean it. ♡

Being someone who's had to learn coping mechanisms at a young age, I honestly don't know what I would have done without it. It's probably on the level of being something that has saved my life, on multiple occassions. ♡
My little sister has a congenital heart defect and we were told that she would only have 20 minutes to live and she has other medical problems too but she is seven now! So we praise god everyday for her! Keep pushing through! It will be over so soon you will make it!

How to customize your sketchbook:
1- sharpie drawings!
2-stickers
3-posca
4- acrylic paint
Washi tape is also an amazing way to decorate sketchbook covers. Those and stickers are my fave ways to decorate covers.
Yes washi would look really nice, I would use extra glue to stick it down as washi is not very sticky:)
For me I have 2 sketchbooks one for my personal use and one for my art class I’m taking in high school currently. I know I’m a year late to this video and I said I’m taking art in high school considering what’s currently happening in the world rn. I did one vintage collage on my personal sketchbook and on my art class sketchbook I did the acrylic painting dark purple with a drawing on it with a hand holding a heart melting on the hand. I just wanted to say this even though we are going through a pandemic. Hope everyone is doing well and is safe! 🙂
i like the blue painting method. IT WAS THE BEST!
My favorite ones were the flower covers with posca pens, especially on the black cover notebook!
I loved how the black one looked, just next time I'll use a spray varnish:)

It is actually possible to completely cover a hardcover book with new paper; I’ve done it many times. The process is just more fiddly. ;^P This was another excellent video with great ideas-I especially liked the covers decorated with paint pens! You could also use duct tape or contact paper to decorate a cover, or sew/knit/crochet a slipcover...the slipcover could then be reused if you use the same size sketchbook over and over, which is something I’ve never managed to do, LOL!

another idea for the scrap booking! For artists who dont have access to a store to get those sheets of paper or dont have the money for it, you can maybe draw out your own patterns on the paper from inside of the sketchbook and use that instead! that way it extra original! :D

I like decorating sketchbooks so I use the original cover as the back and then draw on the cardboard backing and make that my cover

I usually decorate my sketchbooks with a collage out of patterned paper, washi tape and stickers, although recently I've had to use patterned cardboard from a tissue box because the sketchbook I currently like to use has a really flimsy front cover. My most recent sketchbook has a customisable postcard stuck on it - it was one of those relaxing colouring in sheets, and I love it because it's so colorful and it really makes me want to draw something!
I wish I could decorate my sketchbooks with paint because you made them look so beautiful! Unfortunately I don't trust myself with paint and I hate getting in a mess (which isn't a good thing for an artist haha).
I love the idea of a colouring postcard, I have a couple of them and they would make lovely covers. And yes I understand about not wanting to get messy - that's one of the reason I don't use pastels. Too much mess:)

Quick question though- you mentioned fixative spray- isn't it like glue? i.e. sticky? 🤔
No it's more like a varnish - it fixes the art mediums so they don't smear or smudge:)

I have this sketchbook I already started but it has this super glossy cover with this photo of a boat on a lake and the colours are HORRIBLE, anyone know if the paper will stick to the glossy cover?
I'd try a PVA glue to attach paper to the cover. If that does not stick, you could try painting on a layer of gesso or acrylic paint first and then glue on top. If you have some fine sandpaper you could also try sanding the cover first, so the glue has something to stick to. Hope that helps:)
I got my brothers old sketch book and it only had like 5 drawings but the front had a bunch of random stuff
Sometimes I do art on the covers, usually I glue something down .. once it was a very delicate paper cut of a Chinese princess .. very complicated procedure ..🤗

Where can I get the light brown sketch book from? Anyone know?
I found it is a local shop, not sure what the name was. It's a simple A6 kraft paper sketchbook. If you type that into Amzon, there are quite a few results. Pink Pig and Strathmore both also have really nice brown paper sketchbooks:)
I find that when i paint on my notebook, the paint peels off

Cerys - did you have a question about the varnish during the premiere? The live chat ran out before I could answer it but the varnish is a water based Polyurethane Gloss Varnish and I get it from a local craft shop:)
