This hits hard - I thought I was stuck 3 years ago. Started getting accountable and thought about what I could do to change my situation. Started garage saleing - ignored everyone who teased me about it. Learned business skills and made a good chunk of money. Used that money to trade sports cards, ignored everyone who teased me, and saved up about 1 year of expenses doing so. Started a business, just hit 7-figures, found a passion, love every day of it, and have grown so much. In the span of 3 years I - quit a job I hated, finally made the scary but important decision to move to a new state, started a business, launched a blog, freelance write for ONE37pm, and am much more positive, happy, and accountable :)

I used to work at Yard House for about 2 years... I swear every conversation I had there was "Man, table 12 sucks", "I can't wait to get outa here", "see those people over there..?"... ALL everyone could relate too was negativity, and if you tried to be nice they thought you were being sarcastic and were actually annoyed with them. Had to be one of the most toxic environments I've ever been in. Now I work on a farm, taking care of all types of farm animals, outside! I had to take a little pay cut, but being outside with the birds chirping, was so worth it! And everyone else at the farm is happy too... Even after I get off work, the rest of my day is more uplifting and relaxing than it used to be. Worst part is, I didn't even realize how bad it was at Yard House until I had finally left that job. Thanks Gary, you've really changed my perspective on life. As long as my loved ones and I are healthy, life is pretty good.
Sad thing is it only takes one person to sow the seeds of toxicity at work, and that creates the culture. And unfortunately, if it goes unchecked by someone at the top, it stays there.

I’ve watched this 20 times over the past 24 hours. We need more of this. People (not just at Gary’s level) need to feel safe speaking straight from their mind. Publicly airing thoughts. He contradicts himself, but addresses that contradiction. People act like a contradiction cancels the person or opinion, as though their own thoughts aren’t at odds with each other. How did this culture of perfectly curated speech overtake every other element of being human? This is special. The “…Oh boy I want to be the assist…” section at the end is beyond profound.

Hearing this had me think back to 2016 when I was living with 3 negative ppl who just genuinely enjoyed having those "who fckd up" conversation at the TOP of thier lungs. Literally screaming back and forth nonsense about anything. At the time I was too drunk or high to care, but looking back.. I see why that was such a dark chapter for me. You might not even remember my melt down trying to get my interns over the line. I learned so much from them in the end that frankly scared me at how afraid they are about getting it right, impressing, not asking for help because they believe it is conditional and they have to do it themselves. I gave them as much kindness as I could and every one of them broke down in tears.
And, exactly as you put it there, I was fighting against their setup. The company brings them here on Erasmus funding. Most don't get jobs and it is seen as a holiday. A small percentage do want the opportunity but they are living away for the first time where the majority are bumming it out, telling them what's the point in what they are doing, etc. It was an uphill battle and I have stepped away from it now. I will reach them other ways thanks to what I have learned by sitting with them.
I much prefer working with younger people because I learn so much from them too and they still have hope and desire to follow their dreams.

I’m currently retraining & learning so I can work remotely to be able to have more time to focus on what I want to do and build.
One of my favorite lines of yours has always been “it’s not what you make, it’s what you save” and I have been fortunate enough to figure out how to keep my monthly finances very low. This is giving me the opportunity to be able to save and grow/build the future I want to be able to live with stability and happiness… and to help others within my small circle stay or get on the same path.
100% TRUTH. I left my high stress, high money 9-9 job with being "on call" 7 days a week 8 months ago. NOW 9-6, pays my insurance and I'm back on eBay making up for the $ difference and LOVING it!
It's a simple multiplication formula: A "positive" person multiplied by a "positive" person is a positive. A "negative" person multiplied by a "positive" person is a negative person. Two "negative" people multiplied will make it a positive (meaning they agree on the same negative perspective).
