- Your homebrew is dogwater. Dooky even. Thankfully, I Offbeat Outlaw know why this is because I have a massive giga brain and know exactly why your homebrew for dnd and other things is bad.

yo, my chronal Blade was the first thing up there, neat and fair enough, talking about a class is the best way for me to think of how to make it better, so thanks, and love the video Offbeat, great work
Glad you enjoyed the video and based response
My players pointed out that most of my homebrew features either compete for the bonus action,
Or have limited uses on features that don't scale as well as most features,
So one of the things I try to look for is, would a character still use this at level 12 or 16?
And if not, how can I carve out a niche for it at those levels?
Hey what software did you use to make the layout of your submission? It’s awesome!
Awesome love of the recognition..
Oh this is smart. I can see this mistake in every homebrew or campaign I’ve made. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
@@OffbeatOutlaw WOW you replied to me??? That made my day!!
I love your work!
This seems like good advice for all game design, not just homebrew.
Gonna keep this in mind as I make my own ttrpg system.
Side note, making a ttrpg almost entirely from scratch is so painful and I regret my choices. Too late to go back now tho
Good luck soldier 😎
This is what I love about making Druid subclasses. They don’t need to be balanced at all, because you’d need to mess up so horribly to make something more OP than Moon Druid.
Exactly this. The simplest way to keep things balanced is having it be a resource that can only be used so often. Whether that's once per day or by a charge mechanic.
And yeah, it should be made to be fun first and balanced second. Absolutely.
I also like to do this thing where if there is a drawback or limited usage I like to either reduce the drawback or increase the usage over time if it's homebrewed, whether it be one I made or found from someone else. I think items and abilities getting better as time goes on such a great concept that not even WotC always gets right.
I've been DMing my own TTRPG that I developed over last year and am still adjusting the rules for as I'm using my playergroup as playtesters. I have 6 players in my group, 4 of which have never played a TTRPG before this, and considering we've been finding a date to play at least every 2 weeks since January, I'd say they're having fun. I recently asked them if the fights were too easy for them, cause I kinda messed up the balance and they rarely even find a need to heal what little damage they take. None of them had a problem with that. Turns out, players can have fun while not being constantly on the brink of death, who knew? xD
I mean i made a sword that has one use/one swing that teleports an enemy it hits to a random location
They're saving it for the bbeg rn
I didn't tell them said random location was 19 feet above the user's head
I've been toying with a Warlock patron based around ice magic, tanking, and CC. The "balance" is that I left a couple bits of verbiage up to DM interpretation (albeit I might change that), and at levels 1, 6, and 10 you have to sacrifice something, which IMO makes sense for Warlock patrons in general... course I haven't gotten around to sharing it anywhere, albeit I've mentioned it here and there (it's inspired by an ASMR video of all things lol).
The way you described Action Surge is interesting to me. As somebody who plays a Fighter/Cleric, I find myself often using Action Surge so that I can attack and heal on the same turn.
Kept confusedly pausing this video to try check if my phone was playing Poké & Chill without me asking it. Was just the background music here haha!
Really great video! Literally IF ITS NOT FUN whyyyyyyyy?!
I’m fairly new to dnd been wanting to dabble in home brew will now keep this video in mind as I do 💜 thank you. Also going to share with friends
Wait hold on
IS THAT DATING START, FOR AN AD READ?!?!
WHAT IS THIS AN ALPHARAD VIDEO?
Good video useful information and the personality is the personality I enjoy from your content
Bless thank you!
You are right. Thank you.
This video inspired me to go make a new homebrew subclass… thanks Offbeat!
My recommendation is to look at what the features of each level have in common,
Because usually there's some kind of universal restriction to the features at the same level.
“You probably suck at home brew”. Yes I do why do you ask? XD. Best RUclipsr
Thank you thank you 😎
As a counterpoint (however, I mainly agree with you) Losing Hit points is losing a resource...hp being one of the most important resources...watching you I'm sure you get that.
Running a Pokemon tabletop game, and I've decided to basically start throwing balance to the wind. The party currently contains a homebrew Drunken Master who can punch ppl for missing him with attacks (and has ways to make that happen), and multiple Pokemon that are significantly stronger due to powerful Fruits that teach them moves and evolve them early. Plus a bunch of thematic equipment like a Ninja Mask that gives neat buffs or a cloak that makes them take less from most ranged attacks.
And the balance for these comes in the fact that I know they're competent at the game, and will be able to use these tools I've given them to navigate more complex and challenging encounters than they would normally be able to
He had us in the first half, not gonna lie
When i homebrew races and subclasses i typically look at exsisting stuff for scaling and make it forward a theme im excited for. I have a asscreed rouge subclass that is kind of a modular suclass like infusions in a way were you get X amout of assassins tools that all have neat little perks to spice up the general mundanity and if you have for knowledge of what your going into you can set upbyour loadout with the best stuff for the situation. Nothing about them is super strong there really versitile they get a super specific version of extra attack at 9 were you can sneak attack 2 targets at once if there surprised or attack only the same enemy twice.
That is correct, I suck at homebrew, I know from experience. Too bad I actually have some great ideas
I made a homebrew Dwarven god of ale for my paladin as well as some holy items. I had a dumb idea and went from there.
I made a homebrew bow for my rogue which is very simple but has been very fun at my table. The bow when it hits someone causes them to make a saving throw or be restrained. My player asker me if that was going to be balanced and I just went well go have fun with it. And its been great
Thanks for the advice.
Sooo many times I have gotten players who want to pull up some homebrew class. And the one rule of homebrew I always tell them is that I need to have a chance to adjust it first. Because 99 times out of 100, the thing is broken, in a decidedly unfun way. Outclassing all the other classes at the table, or, completely failing to perform the way the player things. or even worst, become a detriment to the party and ruin the fun of the players involved. Please homebrew responsibly and sometimes... just trust your GM.
I’ll check out your twitch

Advice for monster homebrewing: DON'T MAKE EVERYTHING REVFLAORED RED DRAGONS. A lot of homebrew seem to be just monster that deals big damage and has a basicly breath attack. That is fairly boring for most parties to engage with, since it's just a brute force numbers game. Give the encounter some other lanes were it can shine. Give it some methods to mess with action economy, give it some abilities that force players to adabt their strategy. Just nake them more interesting then big thing with breath weapon and claws... honestly this is not just criticism at homebrew but official content as well, so many monsters are just BORING. Obviouslyyou can just pick those that aren't but kinda gotta dig through quite a bit of chaff.
I love the content man
as long as the feedback i get from the players i make this homebrew for is good i will consider my homebrew good.
So wish lets me use Proctic's move mountain because it's leveled
Could you look at GOOD homebrew?
Stuff like Mistral's subclasses or Targon's heroic fighter
Tear this apart:
Barbarian Archetype: Awakened Soul
•Psionic Power
3rd-level awakened soul features
You harbor a wellspring of psionic energy within yourself. This energy is represented by your Psionic Energy dice, which are each a d6. You have a number of these dice equal to twice your proficiency bonus, and they fuel various psionic powers you have, which are detailed below.
Some of your powers expend the Psionic Energy die they use, as specified in a power's description, and you can't use a power if it requires you to use a die when your dice are all expended. You regain all your expended Psionic Energy dice when you finish a long rest. In addition, as a bonus action, you can regain one expended Psionic Energy die, but you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
When you reach certain levels in this class, the size of your Psionic Energy dice increases: at 5th level (d8), 11th level (d10), and 17th level (d12).
The powers below use your Psionic Energy dice.
spiritual pressure
• While not raging, once per day, you can superimpose your psionic will over another copying the effects of the command spell. At level 14, this ability copies the effects of suggestion instead. If you wish to use this ability again, you must expend a psionic energy die.
awakened regeneration
• as a bonus action, once per day, you can roll a psionic energy die and heal for the rolled number +CON MOD. If you use this feature while raging, you may also add your proficiency bonus, as your rage accelerates your regeneration. To use this feature again, you must expend a psionic energy die.
•Your mystical awareness of your physical and inner self have given you the supernatural ability to overcome all manner of mental and physical conditions. As an action while not raging, or as a bonus action while raging, you may expend one psionic energy dice to end any charm, fear, or poison effect, and can use a psionic energy die on saving throws to save against the paralyzed, stunned, and the aforementioned conditions.
Psionic fury:
your awakened power washes over you as you rage, making your next attack especially impactful. Once per rage, when you make an attack, roll a psionic energy die and add the number to the attack roll and damage roll.
anTo use this feature again while raging, you must expend the use of a Psionic Energy die. this feature can only be used once per turn.
• Primal Knowledge
3rd-level barbarian optional feature
When you reach 3rd level and again at 10th level, you gain proficiency in one skill of your choice from the list of skills available to barbarians at 1st level.
• Extra Attack
Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Fast Movement
Starting at 5th level, your speed increases by 10 feet while you aren't wearing heavy armor.
• Primal Path Feature (level 6)
As your will grows more resolute, you gain proficiency in wisdom saving throws.
additionally, your senses have been psionically honed to surpass normal limitations. you gain tremmorsense up to a 20ft radius and Blindsense out to a 10ft radius.
•Add INT MOD to Psionic Fury damage
Feral Instinct
By 7th level, your instincts are so honed that you have advantage on initiative rolls.
Additionally, if you are surprised at the beginning of combat and aren't incapacitated, you can act normally on your first turn, but only if you enter your rage before doing anything else on that turn.
Instinctive Pounce
7th-level barbarian optional feature
As part of the bonus action you take to enter your rage, you can move up to half your speed.
• Your rage damage bonus increases to +3
• Brutal Critical (1 die)
Beginning at 9th level, you can roll one additional weapon damage die when determining the extra damage for a critical hit with a melee attack.
This increases to two additional dice at 13th level and three additional dice at 17th level.
Path feature
At 10th level, you gain a feature from your Primal Path.
•reckless ego
once per round, when you reckless Attack, you may choose one of the following effects after you attack
•You can activate awakened regeneration as part of the attack by expending the Psionic Energy Die
•expend one Psionic Energy Die and add half the number rounded up to your AC until the end of your next turn
•Upon a miss you can use Psionic Fury (even if you have used it this turn) to potentially turn the miss into a hit.
•if the creature or object is huge or smaller, upon a hit, expend a 1 psionic energy die, and add it to a contested athletics vs athletics/acrobatics check. Upon a failed roll, the opponent is violently flung 5x the number rolled on the psionic energy die in a straight line away from you, unless a solid object stops its movement. If the opponent fails the roll by 7 or more, the opponent is also knocked prone.
Relentless Rage
Starting at 11th level, your rage can keep you fighting despite grievous wounds. If you drop to 0 hit points while you're raging and don't die outright, you can make a DC 10 Constitution saving throw. If you succeed, you drop to 1 hit point instead.
Each time you use this feature after the first, the DC increases by 5. When you finish a short or long rest, the DC resets to 10.
Brutal Critical (2 dice)
At 13th level, you can roll two additional weapon damage dice when determining the extra damage for a critical hit with a melee attack.
This increases to three additional dice at 17th level.
Path feature
At 14th level, you gain a feature from your Primal Path.
super ego nova
•whenever you start your rage, at the end of your turn, you can spend up to 5 Psionic Energy Dice to deal force damage to all creatures and objects in a 20ft radius centered on you equal to the number rolled plus your proficiency bonus. All creatures caught in the blast must make a CHA saving throw (DC 8+CON MOD+ Proficiency bonus) or be frightened. Creatures can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of their turns.
•whenever you score a critical hit, you my expend up to 2 Psionic Energy Dice as part of your brutal Critical.
That's my barbarian (copy pasted from my character sheet
Now I have only played 5 sessions of dnd but an associate of mine has made some home brew for a demon slayer dnd campaign and he made my thunder breathing homebrew it gives me a permanent +10 to movement speed and then my move thunderclap and flash adds a d8 to my attack and moves me forward 20 feet but I only have 1 + my constitution modifier uses and that means at level four I can do it five times the damage also scales with my character level it also is needed to kill a demon or to make an appoint strength check all as a subclass for rogue and I’m having fun but I do wanna see what your thoughts are on this
I'm stealing hellbender fighter
I've been working on homebrew to balance the base game content, and I agree that the worst thing to do is going in with a mindset of making it balanced like that. While nerfing shouldn't be ignored altogether, much simpler to buff things up to at least the baseline of other comparable things, and try to make given mechanics sufficiently unique feeling from each other, only applying nerfs in service to that idea. Got to meet the promised fantasy of the Class/Subclass/Race/Subrace/Feat/item/whatever first and foremost. ...For instance, the Tasha's "fixes" to Ranger get on my nerves, since they all replace the base features when they didn't need to (Favored Foe, Roving, and Tireless have no overlap with what Natural Explorer and Favored Enemy actually do, sacrificing those features to get them is dumb "balance" mentality at its peak) while all other classes got some add-on optional features that don't replace the original flavor defining features of those classes. I would have just scrapped Canny its overlap with the base kit and let those others exist alongside each other as separate features at their listed levels.
Will probably never see the light of day, though, as it's just a side project.
I can definitely see the argument. There's a few subclasses that don't really get played because they not only cost a resource but also have a drawback (berserker barbarian for instance). So it definitely feels like WotC already made those mistakes first, and its up to us to learn from it. That said, I don't agree damage should be the end all be all, D&D is a team game after all. I didn't look through all the abilities of the class you showed (it had a lot so I will look later) but sometimes battlefield control is worth sacrificing some damage. Unpopular opinion but I actually like the monk and rogue classes, even if their dps are subpar. (I'm being sarcastic, I know a lot of people like rogue)
Maybe I didn’t emphasize it enough but I stated that the 3 Pillars of play in this game are damage support and control. 100% agree
@@OffbeatOutlaw fair, I guess when you used the Warlock as the baseline for damage I over interpreted the significance of that.
@@Simplyputme I see. The damage baseline was purely because we were covering a class that was trying to deal damage. Happy to clear that up 😁
Beserker Barbarian really suffers from having no way to mitigate the drawbacks.
Like, giving exhaustion is fine, if you can rest it off in a short rest.
I've got homebrew jedi and I wish my fellow nerds would help me know if it's balanced for 3e
I have a homebrew class that is my love project for about a year now, every now and thence I revisit it and change a bit. This weekend I’m going to do it again with this video in mind, thanks.

I need advice for DND I was thinking of adding a tarasc but I don't have the books which books would you recommend
Any homebrew I've made for dnd has largely been a joke, in like a single sitting then never looking at it again. The chronic balancing issue is absolutely rampant in the dnd community especially- which interestingly isn't the case for most other systems simply due to the fact that most other systems have many more tools for making your own stuff, already cover everything you could want from the setting, has enough worldbuilding to warrant adding things that fit within the world.
For example cursed items- cursed items in dnd fucking suck, cursed items SHOULD be unbalanced, powerful, tempting, with a disadvantage that doesn't make itself immediately clear. The idea of balance is pretty much entirely fabricated by the online community, people look at it like a video game that we make mods for rather than a storytelling experience, its really strange.
Homebrew is easy to balance or maybe it's because I've been playing D&d for more than 25 years.
I find that figuring out whether something should be once per short rest or MOD times per long rest is quite difficult,
But in general if it's a feature for martials, balance isn't that much of a worry,
Spellcasters on the otherhand seem to be able to abuse most of the things you give them.
Is blood hunter balanced?
No it’s quite underpowered
The game Cosmic Encounter is horrendously unbalanced, and it's the most hilarious game! If you tried to balance it, you'd lose what makes it fun!
I love how he's just arrogant and insulting us at the start of the video an yet it's very entertaininig
But since people dm difrently its not possible to balance dnd.
This is like saying “it’s impossible the balance chess because everyone plays differently!” There are fundamental rules that must be followed just like any game.
@@OffbeatOutlaw In chess you always fight the same enemy on the same map whit rules for every situation whitout any room for difrent interpritation. I could go on for a looong time about this but its not necesary you understand that paladins have an advantadge in a vampire campain.
@@absolutleynotanalien8096 and in dnd you have a set list of classes and monsters that are officially published with official adventure modules. If you say you can’t balance dnd you haven’t tried hard enough
@@OffbeatOutlaw ruclips.net/user/shortsoioU9_DnEtQ?feature=share8 You must have misunderstod me but i dont nead to argue about how difrent classes are Good in difrent situations wich apears in difrent cuantities in difrent campains because dnd shorts can probably finish this argument for me.
