my problem with akutagawa and dazai is that both of them are among my favourite characters so when i see dazai treating akutagwa poorly i have a mixed bag of feelings can anyone relate
Well I mean I love Makima from chainsaw man but I still acknowledge she’s a literal groomer so there’s that ig
This is extremely relatable. Dazai is my fav character and I love aktugawa. Their relationship kills me😅😢
agreed@@lolgirlgamersworld374
YESS
I can relate so bad
You kinda know these things about their relationship through the show and Manga, but to hear it explained so concisely makes Dazai seem like a really fucked up individual. I get that Dazai is trying teach Akutagawa an important lesson and all, but to do it in such a cruel and abusive way, then teasing him with his new protégé who he treats ten times better, DAMN! It really makes me feel for Akutagawa. If I were him, fuck Dazai's approval I'd go on a killing spree just to piss him off.
Yeah, I have to say finding out about their past made me love Aku more and Dazai less. Even though I know Dazai cares for him and is manipulating him with a purpose, even though I know Dazai regrets his past and how he treated him. I want them to reach healing.
@@31webseries^^^
nah fr
Same with me 😂
@@31webseries you're feeling bad for a person who's an abuser too, yk? He has abused higuchi and kyouka. I hate how much people ignore what akutagawa has done
OKAY AKUTAGAWA FANS- Since bones never animated Akutagawas backstory thats in volume 6 I thoight i'd provide some context on the very early stages of Akutagawas and Dazais relationship and on Akutagwalifin the slums- IF ANYONE HAS QUESTIONS LMK:
When Ryunosuke and Gin where extreemly young there parents devided that they where both 'burdens' and abandoned them so growing up the Akutagawas lived in the slums.
They grew up with about 7-8 other children- Ryunoske being the oldest of the group- and relied on eachother.
In his time in the slums Ryunosuke had earned himself the title "The Heartless Dog" as even when adults beat him until je was half dead or when doinh somthing nice like enjoying a rare decent meal the boy was said to show no emotions and kept all his feelings hidden under a blank facade.
One day a small group of kids returned to there 'home' with a small jewel to which Ryunnosuke instantly asks where he'd got it from. Apparently he a man dropped it after they'd overheared about illegal dealings between a group of thugs and the 'port mafia'. Quicky Ryunosuke panics (because he knows if they'd been seen the men would hunt them down and kill then) and tells everyone to grap anything important to them bc they need to move as soon as possible.
Unfortunately less than a minute later a band of men burst through the door and everyone besides Ryunosuke and Gin (who managed to escape) are beaten to death.
Once he'd got his little sister somewhere safe Ryunosuke decided he wanted revenge for his friends whos libes had mattered so much too him. So Ryunosuke headed to the location where he'd been told the deal was going to be taking place but when he got there all the men who'd attacked his home where dead on the ground and only one man stood amoungst the bodies: Osamu Dazai.
Ryunosuke was obviously confused and demanded Dazai tell him what was going on. To which Dazai simply said that he killed the men as a friendly token to Ryunosuke- who just looked at the man in horror and confusion. Then Dazai introduced himself as :Osamu Dazai a member of the Port Mafia and told Ryunosuke that he wanted to make an offer.
Dazais first offer was that he'd supply him and his sister with enough money to survive for a long while and help Ryunosuke give his friends a proper burial. His second offer was an invitation to the Port Mafia, and Dazai said he'd help make Ryunosuke strong so he could save the ppl he cared about- he would also provide money and shelter to Ryuu and Gin.
Then Dazai asked Ryunosuke what he wanted (thus the scene in the most recent episode) where Ryunosuke asks "Can you give me a reason to live?" and Dazai tells him that he can.
For the first time the dam breaks and Ryunosuke starts sobbing uncontrolably- the first time his heartless exterior broke and he allowed himself to express true emotion.
Dazai just smiled and wrapped his coat around Ryunosuke before taking him to the Port Mafia.
I didn’t know this thx
@@CyanRun np, if u have any questions lmk
Then why did Dazai treat him so badly?
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE RESUME, IT ALL MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW
@@Grwmsss to answer this one i'm going to jump into personal theories I conjoured reading thid backstory! When I was reading I noticed something that didn't quite line up with the story and it's that the man from the Port Mafia shouldn't have acted without direct orders to do so- so it made me think. What if Dazai was the one who gave the order for the men to kill Akutagawas friends?
If we follow this backstory then theoretically Dazai should be unaware that Akutagawa posseses any special abilitys, and since we know Dazai is a selfish character it wouldn't make sense for him to take pitty upon some random kid. I'd assume that Dazai was following Akutagawa and intended to take him into the mafia so he could utilise Rashomon to play a roll in the new Double Black/Shin Soukoku. HOWEVER, Dazai knew that he stood no chance of getting Akutagawa to join the Mafia so long as the boy had something else to life for- therefore by eliminating his friends from the slums Dazai eliminates any competition for Akutagawas loyalty whist also playing the "saviour" so Aku would trust him.
It seems like a very manupulative plot Dazai would come up with if you ask me and it's the only way I could explain the night in my head.
That's my theory anyways!
I really love Bungou Stray Dogs mainly because of how interesting and complex their characters are.
That was a VERY perfect summary of their both personalities. I think the most outstanding part of their relationship is also chapter 24.5 with the bonus text story: A heartless dog, where their first meeting is described and how his first impression of Dazai was. He simply see's a non-human being in him: At the same time God, Devil, Demon, Mastermind, Butcher and All-Knowing. He is a superhuman beyond anyones reach and he himself is the chosen one who was decided to follow him. Since we know Aku has his lung illness - this is the ONLY chance in his life giving the tiny rest of his life ANY value. So Dazai praising others while Aku works so hard for it makes him furious - i think he also hates himself the most for not knowing what he can do anymore to change that. Like a dead end. Thats the reason for his fury - a dog being driven in a corner.
I think people continue to forget that dazai was like 14 or 15 when he was in the port Mafia he's only like 22 so yeah like he has dark personalities trait and he did do some pretty fucked-up stuff but at the same time like just because he's very intellectual he was still thinking in the mind of a teenager even though he was around adults.. But this is a very interesting analyzation of the whole situation and personalities
I’ve read 1 explanation why Dazai treated Aku this way is because Dazai seems him as someone who isn’t valuing life, killing senselessly. The reason why Dazai respects Oda and Ango is because of this too (“a Port Mafia member who doesn’t kill”). It’s also the reason why he treats Atsushi differently; Atsushi’s drive to live is save others for him to get validation of his own life’s value. We saw Dazai finally praising Aku in S2 when he helped defeat Francis; not because he got stronger but because he saved many lives including Atsushi and basically the whole Yokohama. And finally in S5 we learned that Dazai is putting his trust in Aku to save/protect Atsushi (thus the whole world). He is acknowledging that Aku is capable of not killing senselessly anymore and using his powers to value life (and taming the ‘Beast’, if you’ve read the Beast LN). Dazai’s cruelty to hin is inexcusable but this still beautiful 😢

If you think about it Dazai gave Aku a reason to live by making it where Aku wanted his approval
yea but the thing is that's pretty toxic
@@yaradoom7605 Agreed. But even though it's toxic, It still works. (Not justifying it whatsoever, Abuse is abuse, but still)
Atsushi already had someone rough, the guy at the orphanage. While Atsushi grew up and became better Akutagawa just grew worse. Maybe thats why Dazai called the orphange guy Atsushi dad because thats how he sees himself with Akutagawa.
That's an unmcofmy thought 😮
-but surely an interesting one. Ty for sharing!
Kind of surprised to see Bungo Stray Dogs covered on this channel. Good stuff, as this is one of my favorite series, yet so few channels talk about.
Dazai treats him like that because he's conditioning Akutagawa to need his approval like Homelander, this way Dazai can get him to do anything and Akutagawa will do it just for some attention.
New coat=new start.
Dazai ambiguity and mystery is on purpose because author wants us to read No Longer Human. Dazai is nearly identical to book counterpart. Both mask themselves behind persona of charismatic clown to hide their deep misantrophy.
I actually bought the book and read it after watching bungou stray dogs just to understand Dazai better
@@ally5405is it good??
@@talks4you4It is a good read. It wasn't as good as I expected it to be but yeah, It's worth it.
From what I've read of Dazai's writing, I don't think misanthropy is the right word to describe it. Misanthropy, in my opinion, applies more to Akutagawa's writing, who admitted during his time that he disliked people and he read books to learn about people. In his writing, I get the sense that he doesn't understand his fellow human beings except when it comes to evil. He only understands the darker parts of human nature and that's why he dislikes humanity. (He also suffered from extreme mental issues like hereditary schizophrenia, I don't know if he was ever officially diagnosed but his mother was and he was afraid he would become like her, and that's why he ended his life). There's this one quote of his that was going around, about how he studied christianity and made the comment that he doesn't believe in god, but he believes in the devil. Dazai's writing has a different vibe to it. He also doesn't understand people, but to me it seems that he admires them and believes in the best of them while seeing himself as an outsider who isn't worthy of being among them. Very often his characters come off as pitiful and pathetic, because as he admits in "Otogizoshi", he writes about characters like himself cause he doesn't know what it's like to be an admirable person. Another big theme in his writing is the fall of aristocracy after the dismantling of the previous political system. That's one of the major themes in "The Setting Sun" which is a great book btw, if anyone who's read No Longer Human wants to read more by Dazai I fully recommend it.
I love how you analyse characters in this series! Could you please do a short analysis on chuuya too?
Dazai is like a toxic ex!!
i love Akutagawa 🖤
I think Aku is gonna die from his lung disease before Dazai reveals wtf he was up to all this time. People ain’t talking about it. That’s still a thing though and I don’t think Yasono will heal him.
nah git aku wont die remember this is bsd we are talking about here someone like aku who is a major character to the plot dying is impossible
I agree that this is one of the most fascinating relationships depicted on a show! Mostly because, as you point out, it's impossible to without a doubt pin point Dazai's game here.
But I would say, the way Akutagawa already had been when Dazai took him in, he would only respect a deadly efficnient and merciless mentor (or master, more appropriately here). Dazai obliged.
7:53 Very cool indeed man!😊😊😊😊😊😅
Your videos always make my day man! Your analizis sre top tier and im always looking forward to them!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤
I believe that during their first meeting, dazai gives them two options. He gives them enough money for akutagawa and his sister to live comfortably or long enough, or they join the port mafia. Then akutagawa who sees dazai as some entity or demon/god asks if he can get a reason to live. Which dazai replies Yes I surley can. (Or something like that I watched it in sub) Dazai doesn’t give approval to akutagawa because akutagwas reason to live is given by dazais approval. If he got it earlier he wouldn’t have a drive to live. Atushi once says to akutagawa, “Why can’t you see that humans need someone to tell them that it’s okay to live for people to live?!” (Or something like that) It really shows that akutagawa, the emotionless dog that he was before really was empty and needed a reason to live or a home that would accept him. And dazai gave him that. Thats why he yearns for acknowledgment from dazai. Now for the people asking why dazai “trained” him that way, is so that he doesn’t go on rampage. Im pretty sure (Not confirmed) that once it states that akutagawa is a naked sheath without a sword and that if he didn’t train him, the mafia would have gotten rid of him long ago. Dazai even complements akutagawa (this is canon) after oda gets poisoned after saving ango. He says that he is sure that akutagawa will be the strongest member of the port mafia if he learns to “sheath his naked sword.” Im not saying that the abuse had a good effect, or dazai was right to train him that way. It’s extremely toxic and he shouldn’t have trained him that way. Anyway this is just what I think based on my analysis. All the comments are really interesting and I recommend you read them to get a better understanding. I just hate it when people say that Dazai had no reason, or akutagwa deserved it. You can think that way but dig deeper into the truth. Thanks for reading this and have a great day ❤
dazai himself was somewhat heartless when he was in port mafia and judged with only ability and power?? But then later on, after oda's death and his wish, he joined ADA. His character development is drastic there. So when he sees akutagawa, he sees his past self in him and that's why he even tells aku that atsushi is far superior than aku. That's one of the reasons he want them both to work together. And also, in one episode where Kyu is present, dazai slaps atsu and says that "never go down that path. Life becomes living hell". There he mentions himself . . . He is raising atsu in the right way, emotionally. and He wants aku to change too . . .
The subs: "Octagawa".
Thank you!!!!
im getting kind of confused while watching ur videos on bsd but I realized that its bc you watched the dubbed version 😭😭 an example is when you called chuuya and dazai twin dark when its double black on the subbed version
It's double black in the dub. The dub is really quite good.
I love your videos❤
You should talk about bungo stray dog beast sometime
Best hsr girl simply slams
Great video. Where did it say Dazai saw his younger self in Akutagawa and didn't want him to go down the same path?
It’s more so implied
Damn.
Hey, 414Anime. Can you please do a video on 5 facts about Lucy Heartfilia from Fairy Tail?
