  • We all seek a sense of belonging. Created in the image of a communal, Trinitarian God, it is one of our most basic desires. We need affirmation of our identity. But there are a lot of false securities being sold in the cultural marketplace. The “American Dream” promises security based on performance. Advertisers capitalize on the longing, hocking false identities in the form of materialism. Co-dependency is rampant, as we look to those around us to affirm our value. Misguided attempts to find our place in the world end up leaving us feeling even more alone.
    “I Belong to Christ” is a song written from personal experiences of pursuing identity and worth in the things of this world. Yet, it points to something greater: the belonging we have in Christ. True freedom is found in simply receiving the identity He has spoken over us. There’s nothing to prove; nothing to earn. We need only to turn and receive.
    It’s the kindness of God that compels us to hand over our false identities, the love of Christ that welcomes us home, and the Spirit of Christ that testifies with our spirits that we are indeed children of God. Our hope is that this song would encourage believers and welcome all to embrace our true identity, found only in Christ.
    || LYRICS ||
    I don’t belong to riches
    Treasures that don’t satisfy
    Power and pleasures that always run dry
    But I belong to Christ
    I don’t belong to opinions
    Value defined by this world
    Approval and praise that change everyday
    But I belong to Christ
    I belong to Christ my King, I belong to Him
    Drawn by His kindness, found in His love
    I belong to Christ
    I don’t belong to my failures
    Standards never achieved
    The pressure of measures that end in defeat
    But I belong to Christ
    Now I belong to His kingdom
    An heir to riches untold
    With value that’s given and victory written
    I belong to Christ
    || SCRIPTURE ||
    And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
    Ephesians 2:6-7 (NIV)
    But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
    Titus 3:4-7 (NIV)
    For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)
