Parrafin wax melted at low temperature and perchloroethylene is added to change both the chemical structure as well as the density of the wax. (That is why a bottle of PE weighs more at around 1.6units than the same bottle of water at around 1 unit) This is why the wax is mushymushy. PE is used in dry cleaning. The water part of the lamp is purified / distilled / deionized water. A miniscule amount of a chemical such as dishsoap is added to break surface tension... i am talking drop for drop of the soap os added until the wax actually "lifts" off the bottom when heated.. Adding too much of the soap will turn the water cloudy and the lamp won't work. Adding too little will do absolutely nothing either. There was a recipe for this on the internet which i had found back in 2005, but whether it is still out there is the question. Please do remember that a lava lamp is not a child's toy, but actually a highly balanced science experiment. All ingredients and components have to be perfectly balanced in order for the lava to fuction properly. Poor or improper heating / type of coil used inside the bottle is also a major factor.
jordandlugosch thanks I have read that sometime ago, I’ve a large mathmos grande I need to change fluid on will be doing soon. At this moment changing wax on a smaller mathmos.
The general consensus is the liquid is 70% water 30% polyethylene glycol. Sure would be nice if Lava would tell us exactly how to refill our old vintage bottles to restore the if the wax is still good.
3 grams? so one hit is 25-50 micrograms. 3 grams is 3 million micrograms. you would be tripping for the rest of your life and you would be the lava lamp.
Brock Bah not so, Distilled water, glycol, a drop of clear surfactant liquid, the paraffin wax also has petroleum jelly and Perchloroethylene added all at specific amounts
My thought's exactly. It's like when you have to dissect a frog in biology class, you don't have to do it and there are better options then killing a frog.
So what exactly where you planning to do when you poured one out and had two people squeeze the contents? What were you expecting to learn from this? What reason made you think of this?
Thank you for benefiting me and the Fufus. Now we truly know what's inside of a Lava Lamp! You see, my neighbor's, husband's cousin's, sister yearned to know what was inside. She developed Stage 3 Lymphoma and was on her death bed. But, after this video she recovered, jumped 7 feet into the air and exclaimed "Yurika!" She now is a full-time teacher working in the education industry for more than 7 years and her life couldn't be more positive. Thank you, Science Insider! Im try to change the water because my lava lamp water is become cloudy, in the first try it fail. That wax doesnt move at all .. and i try to search it again. Then i found some information about it, to add the water a bit of salt and liquid dish soap. And now it works perfectly and i can change my lava lamp water colour to if i want it. But clear is my favourite.
They used to use very dangerous chemicals inside a lava lamp (carbon tetracholride)… I seriously hope they no longer use that (especially since it was banned in cleaning products decades ago). If you broke an old one, do not touch any of the ingredients
I think they added detergent to it. I accidentally put a little detergent powder into a toilet bowl with domex (toilet bowl cleaner, color blue) around it, and the detergent never stopped ascending and descending.
Lava-Simplex, the original American manufacturer, put kerosene in the liquid apparently. When they changed the formula to be less toxic, the quality of the flow unfortunately suffered.

The distilled water has a mixture of glycol also.

Make your own homeade lava lamp:
1) a lamp
2) 3 grams of LSD

Does throwing out the lava lamp content helps you to identify what the ingredients are?
Seems like you guys are just playing with it😂
ghahaha 43 yes, and some footage for the video.
My thought's exactly. It's like when you have to dissect a frog in biology class, you don't have to do it and there are better options then killing a frog.
Ikr it's not that difficult to identify it if you run a few samples for isolating organic compounds
So what exactly where you planning to do when you poured one out and had two people squeeze the contents? What were you expecting to learn from this? What reason made you think of this?

Here's what in the lava lamps: Perchlorate (brake fluid) and parrafin wax, with distilled water, Epsom Salt, and a surfactant (like dish soap)
What does the salt do?
that chemist is low key hot 😳😳😭
I think you mean "less dense"

How lava lamp companies get new customers: If you can’t convince them, confuse them.

It's mostly a DIY product if you have enough patience. Then some companies take the patent and spare you the hassle

So basically lava lamps are portable examples of mantle convection?
All I wanted to know was what were the additives and you guys didn't name any besides Kerosene.
Normally I like the videos on this channel, but this is basically clickbait. Next time, title it “we don’t really know what’s in a lava lamp”
I thought there would be a definitive answer to what is inside but theres none.disappointed!

#scienceinsider please check the video volume level before uploading , had problem listening to it!
Nobody uses a lava lamp to actually try to see something
Now that you mentioned it I really think that the secret ingredient is animal fat
They really needed an "expert" to say theres a secretive additive in the liquid? I thought it was obvious.
If she is your boss. Can she hire me?
@mnemonic Max criminal
So, no one run a chemical test on it? You could easily know all the list of chemical used in the liquid.
Yea, you could find out the ingredients, but you still need to know the ratios of how to mix the liquids, that's the secret.
