    Slipknot is popular because they're amazing, not because they're sellouts or something. They're clean and well orchestrated, yet they still feel raw and true. They're much like Metallica in that way, where the emotion is still there, but the music is so, I want to say, mechanically timed, like it was written by computers. Honestly, they're just great and metal elitists can suck it lol.

      Slipknot has become more and more "accessible" to non metal fans, whether it's for their catchy tunes, awesome masks, or their flashy performance, and I think that's why a lot of metalheads (or elitists) hate them.

      I grew up listening to Slipknot, and once I found out about more death metal and black metal bands, I stopped listening to them and started becoming more of a metal "elitist". These days, over a decade later, I have come back to appreciating what they are. It's not quite what I look for anymore, but I do appreciate what they are. They are a great band, but they are not the HARDEST OF THE HARDEST, nor do they claim to be. They are just who they are, like it or not.

    For being new to metal, you guys sure have a handle on some widely talked about metal issues. Like Lars being among the weaker thrash drummers, Slipknot's questionable acceptance, and if Gojira is accepted among metal elitists. It shows you guys take an interest in things beyond the song at hand and that encourage a deeper dialogue. Keep up the good work guys!

    • @laporte1625

      How do you even have time to read them all though haha! And yeah Lars is very criticized for not being a huge technician, but I personally love what he does, he always finds ways to enhance songs by adding very distinctive grooves, patterns, efficiency. He won't always go for the flashiest option, but he'll choose the one that serves the song the most, even if it's a rather simple beat. And I love that. On a sidenote, you guys should REALLY review FEAR FACTORY, since a few of the bands you've reacted to now (Gojira, Slipknot...) have actually been influenced by or tried to copy them. Sweet and short songs representative of their hugely influential and essential body of work: Self Bias Resistor, or Zero Signal. Playlist material absolutely guaranteed since it is one of the 10 best metal albums of all time.

      Screw the haters man, Lars Ulrich is a great drummer. He gets all the shit for different reasons: Metallica being more commercial, he obviously doesn't play like the early years, his personality. I get it, he can be a bit of a douche. But we can't deny that he's been one of the best drummers in metal history.

      I know I'm late with this post, but if a person is a true fan of a band, then they should appreciate the changes. I started listening to Slipknot back when AHIG debuted and was hooked when I heard songs like Psychosocial, Snuff (my personal favorite from Slipknot), and Sulfur. Yes, it does suck that Paul Gray, Joey Jordison, and Chris Fehn are no longer members but the band found great replacements in Jay Weinberg, Michael Pfaff, and Alessandro Ventruello who are all amazing musicians.

  • @mechachrist
    @mechachrist 5 лет назад +37

    I love that you guys recognize how the musicians play off each other and feed each other. I've seen bands audition some incredible musicians to fill empty spots, but will pass them up if they didn't fit the family. Five skilled musicians who are like brothers will invariably make better music than five master musicians who have no connection with each other. It shows in the music.

    Metalheads might have an anti-Slipknot bias because they do follow a pop formula on some songs.... but they might also be mad for the reason I always was; telling someone you listen to metal and they go “oh like slipknot?”
    and have a mental image of their specific fan base, and as a young person you want people to “get” your identity I guess... not get it wrong lol
    They have been around long enough to prove themselves musically in my opinion, even if I was never a big fan.

I like that they stop to absorb what they just listened to and discuss it. It's fun to see people react to something they never expected (Like the Jinjer - Pisces "live" performance video), but it's not really content that makes you interested in returning. These guys give you both the pleasure of seeing 2 guys react to something they may or may not be prepared for, but what keeps you coming back is how they then process everything and relay it back to you with knowledge on music in general. Even if it's a topic they acknowledge isn't their forte, they still bring a ton of insight and questions to make you either think on it too or give them a response for them to think about.

      If people are considering Metalica or Black Sabbath as metal, than I would say they are for more known and mainstream. I may remember it wrong, or it may be where I lived at the time, but Slipknot was not played all that much on the radio nor was it really known very well to my peers or even the parents/older siblings of my peers.

    I have to put my two cents in, even though I haven’t read any other comments. First off, thanks to you guys again for putting up a cool metal review. It’s still great to see non-metal people checking out metal. It’s amazing.
    Now, to Slipknot...
    This band has literally saved my life. When I was deployed to Iraq in 2005, I would listen to their “Iowa” album every morning so I could get myself ready for the day...and whatever it may have brought. Their music got my mind right with facing death and allowed me to do my job well. That being said, there’s lots of bias to my opinion of Slipknot, and I know people are different, but I still think they’re a great band musically, and they’re the most unlikely success story you could ever hear of.
    Think about it...a NINE-PIECE band, from Des Moines, Iowa, in masks, playing brutal heavy metal. Yet, here they are at the top of metal’s ranks and still killing it today. That’s really saying something to their talent, musicality, and their willingness to stick to their guns and make music they want to.
    Also, each member has a great story to tell, and if you are interested, I recommend reading up on them. Thanks again!

    • @markschlipper5129
      @markschlipper5129 6 лет назад +6

      I'd like to think he's smart enough to understand the context of the comment as much as the surface of the comment itself. These are guys that aren't in the metal "scene" talking about metal. By their own admission are ignorant of a lot of that "scene". But, they're bright, willing, and open minded critics. And in the context of these guys as the critics, the pop reference isn't insulting or antagonistic. They even piled on the caveats to make that clear. So - as I started with - I'd like to think Taylor would hear that, laugh about it and what his fans might think about it, and ultimately appreciate it for the compliment it is. In that they're saying he doesn't just growl and yell, but can also sing pretty f'ing well if it's called for. If he can't appreciate that - he's an idiot.

      Its actually a good description upon first hearing him. His singing voice is pretty pop. He not technically great at singing. His voice isnt that soulful. Think i was in 7th grade when the first album dropped. Heard wait and bleed and loved it. They were the last for lack if a bettrr term nu metal band i really was into. Grew up loving korn up until issues. Dont care for any album after that. The first limp bizkit record is good fuck what anyone says hahs. Not amazing or anything but it was pretty original. Wes guitar playin really stands out. Then thru that type of music i got into metal but really into hardcore. Loved that shit haha. Was a huge positive influence in my life and bein ba musician was really good bein involved in thr hxc scene

    I'll touch on a few things to give you guys some perspective. That drummer getting down? There's three. Slipknot has 9 members, including a drummer, 2 percussionists beating on whatever (mostly trashcans though), a DJ and a sampler. That singer that's so good? That's Corey Taylor, the same frontman for Stone Sour. Check out their song Bother to really get into his melody. Also, yes, he flows. With some of the earliest tracks he's on, he does straight up rap sometimes. And he's a poet with his lyrics. Consider him the Tupac of the rock community. And I don't say that lightly. I've read A Rose from Concrete. One other thing ya'll talk about though...metal's elitism. Yeah, we can be a snobby community, though it's honestly not as much about innovation as you think. Because if a band changes their sound, a lot of fans will throw them under the bus for it. It's a lot more because outsiders gravitate towards metal to begin with, so there's a sense of exclusion from the beginning. Say I find this band that I like, that's MY band. And if they get big enough that they're "pop", then I've lost my exlusivity of liking this band. Think in those terms, at least to some extent, about the elitism of metal fans. I'm with ya'll though. If it's good, it's good. And Slipknot has a lot of good stuff. And they are metal. Don't let anyone tell you different.

    Pay no attention to the metal snobs and elitists. As a metal community altogether we historically have been, and continue to still be, our own worst enemy when it comes to expanding rock & metal music. So don't pay us any attention. We always have to find a way to keep our genre from growing in popularity by trashing the bands who suddenly create some music that your typically non-metal listeners begin to like.
    For whatever reason or another, we can't consider anything "good metal" if more than 100 people belong to their fanbase, and if you can hear the singer actually sing. So don't worry about metal fans. If we knew what we were doing, we wouldn't have limited our genre's appeal by scaring away all the potential new listeners so often in the past 25 years like we've done.

    Metal fans are notoriously elitist and snotty (and I'm one of them). But at least I try to keep my mind open. Yes I trash some of many popular acts because I simply don't like their sound. But I also recognize the qualities of the bands that gain popularity.
    Slipknot has always had a very dope lead singer. And some of their radio hits are utterly infectious. Yea it's mainstream metal. No it's not as brutal as some of the other metal songs out there.
    But you know what? That's ok. I think it still sounds dope.

    Please do more Slipknot! I felt so validated to hear you guys say things I've been telling my "metal elitist" friends for years man... I love hip hip and many other genres, which is what lead me to discover you guys. Metal is another genre I love to jam, and Slipknot has been one of my favorites ever since I first heard them (and I had no idea who I was hearing at the time, I just knew it sounded dope). Do some more Slipknot reviews man. They have a lot of depth and you'll be surprised!

    The only reason a part of the metal community didn't like Slipknot was that they were hugely popular back in the day, even among non metalheads and conservative metal fans didn't like that.
    Oh and it was mainly popular with teens, and you know how teens are... so when you were a metalhead (=an outsider) and someone from your class who didn't listen to metal at all suddenly liked slipknot and told everyone about it, you would just hate them because in fact you hated that guy...

    • @dylanschmeichel2008
      @dylanschmeichel2008 6 лет назад

      thats not exactly true, i mean i like them, but they are pretty simple and not very unique other than the masks. the reason some people dont like them is the same reason ppl dont like pop music, its simple and catchy, which is why its popular. not bashing slipknot, but they do have like 8 members, and play pretty basic shit.

    • @hierrofante
      @hierrofante 6 лет назад +1

      i get your point, but me, a metal elitist, always understood they take on metal, i mean, they write catchy songs, and they are good at it, blending some death metal stuff here and there, like blinking an eye and lets conspire against the mainstream, thats seems to be their attitude...

    • @ZarkAttack
      @ZarkAttack 6 лет назад +1

      DylanTheSmylan the riffs are simple, but if you listen to the overall compositions there is a lot going on. Also, you'll often need to listen outside of the singles for their better stuff. Try Skin Ticket, great atmosphere there.

    • @dylanschmeichel2008
      @dylanschmeichel2008 6 лет назад

      ik what your saying, i have a slipknot patch on my vest, i like some of their stuff, but their newer stuff, well, i feel they arent that musically talented, the guitarist, vocalist, and drummer, well, joey, were talented. i dont know much about djs but sid seems pretty talented too, the others, well, not really. look when joey got kicked out, i left too :D

    • @ZarkAttack

      There's nothing wrong with simple either. Some of the best black metal is extremely simple.

    Almost 50 years of metal history, and there are still metal-hipsters who proclaim that only their brand of underground/lesser-known/niche genre music is the only "real metal." Try broadening your horizons and listening to what you like rather than what you think makes you edgy and cool.

    • @skinblanketed
      @skinblanketed 6 лет назад

      DeweyManloveX For me, it's not about what's edgy or cool. It's about excitement in innovation. I want to hear something I've never heard before. My gripe with this song is the sing-songy chorus. It's just been done to death and sounds uninspired. All just personal preference, of course, but that's my reasoning for skipping over newer Slipknot.

    • @LuthienC
      @LuthienC 6 лет назад

      LOL "edgy or cool" I know of about 4 people who think any of what I listen to is cool. One is my husband, one is my brother, one guy worked at a butcher dept in a grocery store I was in wearing a Moonspell shirt, and the other is my husbands cousin who I have met one time.

    • @DeweyManloveX
      @DeweyManloveX 6 лет назад +1

      I was referring to people who think that they're cool because they listen to music that others hate or don't know about, not that any given music itself is or is not considered cool. The type of people who say "I used to listen to them before they got commercial." by which they mean I only listen to obscure non-popular (as opposed to unpopular) things because I think that makes me super-hip and cool.

    • @DeweyManloveX
      @DeweyManloveX 6 лет назад +1

      That is a great thing, and I agree. But calling more popular music crap simply because it's popular and then referencing an obscure Psycho-polka-blackish-retro-bluescore band (for example) as "real" metal is simply being a hipster with a leather coat and long hair--instead of a fedora and neck-beard.

    Been listening to your channel for a little bit now, and I gotta say that I've enjoyed it immensely. I'm 50 years old and have been listening to metal or its Rock/hard rock predecessors my whole life. I've also been told my whole life that my music is shit. I am so glad that you two have discovered what makes this music great. I'm definitely a metalhead, but can appreciate all music, or at least parts of it. Open minded free thinking! Thanks for putting that first. Keep doing what you're doing because you're doing it well!!! 🤘😎🤘

    Slipknot is great! People focus too much on how “hard” something is by how low the guitars and tuned and if it’s “difficult” sounding. Slipknot is a great balance between the two in my opinion. The devil in I is one of my favorites by them.

      A lot of people from slipknot get introduced into different metal genres
