  • I love my bestiaries for 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons from Kobold Press. But I have at least one issue with all of'm. This time, with the Tome of Beasts 3, Kobold press absolutely hits the nail on the head and delivers what might be the best bestiary out there.

    It's a throwback to AD&D. They had the Monster Manual, then the Fiend Folio, and then the Monster Manual 2.

    I actually just picked up the Tome of Beasts II because of your initial flip through. (I don't have a bestiary at all, and I plan on running my first campaign that isn't entirely improvised soon).
    I plan on running a semi aquatic camping and a lot of the strange water creatures I saw while you flipped through it looked really appealing, and it definitely doesn't hurt that I was able to pick it up for less than any official bestiary retails for. My play group is pretty relaxed and I don't think a little sillyness will be too unwelcome, the fact that all these books seem so dense and have similar/better quality than official content seems criminal for how reasonably they are priced.

    I have the creature codex and got the "ToB 3" from a humble bundle ... So glad I watched this video saving me from buying the other 2 books and lairs. The "Wasteland Dragon" is absolutely bad ass.

    Just found an alt cover for Tome of Beasts 3 at a game store.
    Tome of Beasts 2 sounds like the book for me. I like to run a lot of joke monsters and my campaigns tend to be a mix between serious and comedy as too much of only one isn't very fun.

    I'm wondering if by "joke creatures" you include the Alehouse Drake or the Cikavak, based on how you grimaced at the Barnyard Drake. I don't think those are joke creatures, they're just creatures not meant to be fought. I love those creatures because they make the world more magical. I actually wish there was lore information on magic harmful plants, magic pests, magic insects, all of which aren't meant to be fought but are meant to be used by the dungeon Master as setting pieces. Kobold Press is chalk full of them and just seeing the goofy barnyard drake pop up made me realize, "I gotta buy this one too."

    Does each monster doesnt offer a unique experience via mechanics? Because I have no need for the same bag of hitpoints with a new name

    Ogrepede looks like something cool to throw in the abyss or another of those planes.

    I'm curious, have you checked out the Dark Matter 5e materials from Mage Hand Press? It's a rather interesting sci-fi fantasy setting with new mechanics and such. I feel like it would make for an interesting video.

    Just found out about your channel, I’m from the Netherlands. I’m playing with the idea of becoming a DM, So strolling the interwebs for some interesting books. Would you recommend the pocket editions of the Kobold press books or should I jump in big and go for the Hardcovers?
    Thanks for what you’re doing, great channel!

      Welcome to the channel. If you travel a lot, the pocket editions are super handy. But I personallt prefer the hardcovers become of them staying flat on the table. And just bigger text so easier to quickly glance at say a creatures AC or HP.

    Let's take a sec to show respect to the Royal Chimera. Dope art, maybe the best looking creature ever? Plus it's a good creature design. There's a dude made of potatoes and somehow it's not lame!! Shephard and Viper Drakes have A-plus art. Love these KP manuals!!

    Great review. As new(ish) GM in 5E I have a question: is posible to make some "easy hack" to fix CR in ToB1? Like just add +2 to existing CR or something similar?

    • @MrTarrasque
      @MrTarrasque  Год назад +1

      It's really hard to say since CR is shuch a relative term. If you are playing with a party not full of power players, than +2 could work. If I had to just go off off my sixth sense, I would +1 per tier of play.

    Man the high quiality paper was an awesome surprise when mine came in the mail, I have CC and TOB2 and the matt paper feels like it can be damaged easily
    So for this to look so good and glossy is incredible for me
    Having so many drakes makes me wanna create and entire continent/Island where drakes live and do it like a "How to train your dragon" culture

    Thanks for the thoughtful review! I bought the first Tome when it came out and while the art was nice, it was definitely not what I was looking for in a bestiary. Checking out the monster abilities and features in the snippets of this review, I can tell this Tome is not for me either.

    Honestly out of all of the books personally TOB2 has the most monsters that I like, although the TOB3 cover blows the rest of the books out of the water. On your complaint about the first TOB I do find that interesting because in my experience the monsters felt more true to challenge rating than even the official released books.

  • @Iulian111
    @Iulian111 Год назад +1

    How's the paper sheet quality for TOB3? I personally prefer the matt finish as a trade-off. The glossy look makes the colours poop, but I find the paper used in Southlands Worldbook and Book of Ebon Tides a little too thin for my licking. Seems to be better quality than WOTC paper, but I'm still afraid of damaging it.
    As for TOB 2, I think you overestimate the number of actual joke creatures. If I remember correctly, you criticized the Nauthveli (the cow-whale). Unlike the Ogrepede, the Nauthveli is an actual folk monster of icelandic origin. Once you read about it and Illhveli in general, they can get really cool and you might be lucky to find alternative art for it. Some folk and mythological monsters are just wierder than what we're used to.
    I have the same adversion for joke monsters as you and that was my first reaction as well. What helped me was a piece of paper and a pen. Noted all the monsters that looked like "joke monsters". After that, I read their entries and I googled those that had a funky name to differentiate wierd folklore monsters from made up ones. They're really not that many. It's just a mental barrier and TOB2 is one of the best 5e bestiaries out there, together with the other KP ones.

    • @MrTarrasque
      @MrTarrasque  Год назад

      The paper feels really sturdy for me.
      About the joke monsters, it' personal. But even if some things come out of real folklore, including them is not always nessecairly since some, to me, are just redicioulous.

    • @Iulian111
      @Iulian111 Год назад

      Yeah, I understand the feeling. Still, it's a shame to let a few quirky monsters spoil the lot for you.
      There are a few really great gems in there. The Curator is my favorite. He's the kind of recurring NPC that does his own thing, could be a big player, could be a passerby, PCs might want to use his help even if the guy is fishy and possibly dangerous. Reminds me in a way of Baba Yaga.

    I have said it many times, if you want good 5e material 3rd party is the way to go. Kobold Press knocks it out of the park once again. I backed the book kickstarter. The only negative I have is that now that I am phasing out my 5e play it will not get as much use as the others in the series have.
