I had a character named whisper in a fan fiction I wrote as a kid and I found out a few years later that they had added a character by that name to the cannon universe with strikingly similar character traits right before I planned to post my story....

I used to have a oc that was a male character named Blane. While I still kept the name I repurposed his design and made him into an oc i use for personal reason and changed his gender to female after I accepted I was trans.

I once had a side character named Corona. You can see why this name is now Elanor.

I had a few characters I had to change. One was just the spelling, the other was that I like to use meaning behind names, and as the character changed, I realized his name no longer suited him lol

(I was young) i had a group of kids who were named after colors (b/c i didnt feel like thinking about names and it just stuck), then i had another group, who were titled antis, who sought to replace important people. Their naming system would be "anti [name of perspn theyre replacing]. Then TWO YEARS AFTER creating them, i realized it implied the existence of a character named anti-black 😅😅😅😅😅😅

Riley the spy guy.... it could work... depends on the tone of your work and the personality of the character of course. Then again you could do it as a gaff! Like how Indiana Jone's named himself after the dog, you don't find out until later though.

Yeah, it really just didn’t fit the tone of the character or sound natural in a fantasy-esque world.

Can someone clue me in to what's wrong with the name Riley? Google was no help.

I think she's just saying it doesn't fit his brooding and intimidating personality!

Riley makes me think "Riley Riley Riley!" in a 'baby' voice? I think there is a dog movie that has the dog with that name. Also, It's just not an intimidating name

Not published, but the first main character I created for the various works I wrote has had three names.
Originally he was named Ray. It is a medieval fantasy setting. (Probably inspired by the romantic interest in Final Fantasy: Spirits Within)
I quickly changed it to NeRethil when I realized I wanted a more... fantasy-sounding name. (I only realized decades later that I may have kept Netheril in mind from the DnD lore from the one time I've read my brother's DM handbook)
And then, because it was a bit too on-the-nose, I made that his pseudonym, and his birth name became Ulric. (This one was voluntarily a mix of the German name Ulrich and Moorcock's protagonist Elric of Melniboné, since I was branching on writing more dark fantasy stuff)

I write erotica. One of my first stories is still one of my favorites, but I met my ex-husband after I wrote it, but before I published it. I had to change the name of the main character because it was the same name as my new step daughter. 😬
