I particularly love oronyms which are word bridging homophones and I've noticed how l can use them to subconsciously convey a secondary meaning.

Literature is in tough shape when 99 percent of comments on any given literature vid (including audiobooks of the Western canon) are something like "test tomorrow you saved my life"
Good for writers who don't suck, bad for that writer's readership

Wonderful stuff! Thank you. Okay, so you asked at the end what our favorite uses of literary devices are. I have several examples of ones I love from books I love (movies too--the killer personification being "I'm Batman.") Another favorite is a sentence, an elaborate bit of alliterative "formal" diction (using vowels instead of consonants to establish rhythm). It describes someone's reaction to the sound of a cathedral bell, from the perspective of a person under the influence of opium, and it's at the very beginning of Dickens' unfinished detective novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. The book first poses this question: "is the cathedral really there?" My best friend and I memorized the sentence that follows when we were about sixteen, and we used to recite it to one another, very slowly, at appropriate (& inappropriate!) moments: "Some vague period of drowsy laughter must be devoted to the consideration of this possibility."

Confused by the different between a colloquium and slag diction . I don't know the difference

    • @selfpublishingTV
      @selfpublishingTV  3 года назад +1

slang is more focused on made-up language typically used by certain groups of people. An example of slang would be: "on fleek" or "cap". Colloquialisms are more informal phrases or words known by a larger population, less about the word and more about the style of being informal (however, slang CAN be included in this). examples of colloquialism are: "gonna" meaning "going to", "be blue" meaning "to be sad", etc. You can see more examples here: self-publishingschool.com/literary-devices/#colloquialism

  • @Nojell

This is very interesting.. one of these styles mentioned kinda relates or maybe influenced the way I learn things. I can retain more if I hear situations played out. And then understand the moral of the subject...? That’s wild&werid

Hi, after hearing this, could you pls clarify whats the difference between juxtaposition and oxymoron?

    • @smeagolpotato9865
      @smeagolpotato9865 3 года назад +1

What's the similarity? Juxtaposition is putting two things together to compare or contrast. This could be entire scenes or points of view in a story. Oxymoron is an ironic word pair: jumbo shrimp, military intelligence, old news, freezer burn, etc.

    Ignore this comment.
    My understandings:
    1. Allusion: Basically a *reference.*
    Example:
"He looks like _Keeanu Reeves_ and _Jesus Christ."_
    2. Diction: Choice of words/word style
(I know this has many diffent types of diction)
    Examples:
    Formal Diciton
    "I will ameliorate myself."
    Informal diction
"I shall improve my linguistics skills.
    3. Alliteration: similar consonants
"The hot pot has a hot top hat."
    4. Allegory: I didn't completely understand what this meant.
but i guess "a story within a story"
    idk.
    5. Colloquialism: it's like a different culture word style.
    Example:
"Oi bruv, wot ye lookin' at, ye?"
    6. Euphemism: alternative words/phrases (to avoid actual term(s) or indecent word(s).
    Example:
    "Frick you."
    7. Flashbacks: past memory
-plot decvice that goes back in time for a specific scene
    •has to be intentional
    8. Foreshadowing: hints or clues?
-plot device that is giving hints or clues that will in the future
    9. Imagery: use of visually descriptive or figurative language
•creates an image for the readers mind
    (this clip was so short.)
    10. Personification:
-figurative language that _gives_ human-like characteristics to non-human things
    11. Juxtaposition:
contrasting elements next to each others to amplify themselves
(i didn't get this completely but okay)
    12. Metaphor/Simile
    Metaphor
"He is Jesus Christ." (He isn't, he looks like it.)
    Simile
    "He is like Keeanu Reeves."
    13. Onomatopoeia
Word that describes a sound, or that represents a sound, they are italicized.
    "Bees sounds like buzzzzzzz"
BANG! (A sound for a gun)
    14. Symbolism: as the name suggests, it is literary device that uses a specific element to symbolize more drastic and bigger
"The number 7 is a lucky number."
    (couldn't understand it completely.)
    15. Tone
Literary device that uses when a narrator's thoughts, feelings or opinions about what's going on.
(couldn't get simplify and understand it completely.)

a metaphor is not intended to help a reader understand something better.. its definition and intention is the antithesis of that. a metaphor is a figure of speech that is abstract and intended to be creative and sometimes symbolic

The advantages and disadvantages of the Internet and online games
It’s not true that online games don’t provide any benefits! On the other hand, we can’t deny that they have a bad side too. Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of online games.
    The advantages of online games
We interact with other young people, we can create groups and communities, and we help each other: we socialize…
We can learn new strategies, solve problems, and meet challenges: we think!
We develop our observational skills and work on our attention and concentration: we learn.
Can you please help me with the literary devices in the text above?
