In today's video, GM Hikaru Nakamura @GMHikaru plays the Hippopotamus Defense again, and with great success! In this video, we look to analyze the Hippo Defense by Hikaru and specifically how he utilizes certain chess strategies. We see good examples of chess opening theory, chess opening strategy, chess opening tactics, chess opening tricks, chess opening traps, chess opening moves, and chess opening ideas. The Hippo Defense is a dangerous and underrated chess opening for black, and chess opening for white as well. I myself used the Hippopotamus Defense to earn both CM and NM titles. Is FM next? Not sure. But for now I am taking a break from competitive chess. My goal is to hit 100K subs on RUclips, and in terms of competitive chess, hitting NM was my goal. Now that I did that, I am switching to RUclips content. Subscribe to The Chess Giant if you haven't already! Appreciate you!
There's so many search-terms on RUclips including chess for beginners, chess vibes, chess moves, chess game play, chess grandmaster, chess openings for beginners, chess principles, chess tricks, chess for beginners, chess explained, chess lessons, win at chess, chess, RUclips chess, chess vs, chess game, chess live, speed chess, chess lesson, beginners chess lesson, best chess openings for beginners, best chess openings for white, best chess openings for black, best chess openings for intermediate, chess opening tier list, chess openings tier list, win at chess, and so much more. How do we improve at chess? How do we take our game to the next level? My answer is simple. Focus on two things, those being chess tactics and chess endgames. Chess openings are important, I mean y'all have seen how much energy I've putten into Hippopotamus Defense content! However, in terms of improving ELO - make sure not to skip over tactics and endgames.

I noticed that you pronounced his name high-ka-roo, again. It's a Japanese name and the correct pronunciation would be hee-ka-roo. I know you don't mean disrespect to him, and you seem to be American ;p so, here we are - just thought I'd let you know. Cheers! and thanks for the great content. :)

Yes! Hope chess is the only chess I know how to play! Hahaha. I hope opponent doesn't notice I didn't defend my pawn. He took my pawn. Not again!

Good game & analysis. Hikaru’s sudden mate just in endgame is super sweet. Cheers!

@@TheChessGiant Yes, sweet two bishop mate. Hikaru’s tactical flair shines once his opponents make a misstep facing the hippo. Thanks Solomon for posting these hippo games by Hikaru; they’re most instructional on how to handle the middle game & convert in the endgame, which helps a lot!

I played the hippo in a recent fide rated tournament and I was up 20min, lost the game unfortunately… but really shows how hard it can be to play against the hippo. Will continue to study and analyse the hippo so I can improve at playing it

It's pretty amazing. You gain the time advantage and even if opponent booked up on the hippo is still a hard opening to crack! Eric Hansen did a whole Hippo Speedrun, hundred of games. And then Hikaru smacks him using the hippo hahaha.

Ah! Sounds like you gave your opponent a run for his money! My encouragement to you is to take at least one takeaway from the game. If you now know one thing you didn't because of that game, and you keep this process going, it's impossible for your hippo skills to stay the same.

@@TheChessGiant You too, Solomon. Each one of your Hippo presentations brings a new discovery. I appreciate your explanations of a position in which you warn a player not to do something, and point out the reasons(s) for avoiding certain moves.
      Take Care, be well.
