clip studio paint was literally the single greatest deciding factor with which i bought an iPad pro for digital art - haven't regretted it for a single second. Absolutely outstanding.
procreate is pretty nifty too - I bought it, and someday soon, I'll actually take the tie to learning it thoroughly

Great video. Thank you for posting it.
I'm a beginner w.r.t. digital art apps. I've been trying out many of them and I definitely agree with you with respect to Procreate, Astropad, and Sketchbook. By the way, the desktop version of Sketchbook has more features than the iPad version (e.g., perspective guides)...another reason to get Astropad...
An app that I really like, that didn't get mentioned in your video, is Concepts. It's probably my 2nd favorite app after Procreate. To me, Procreate seems like more of a fine art app, so I'm not concerned that it doesn't do shapes or text. Concepts, on the other hand, is vector-based and does shapes and text. To my untrained eye, Concepts seems to be more of an illustrator's app.

  • @pbasswil

Always interesting and well expressed, Brad. I've settled on Concepts (by Tophatch), because the strokes are vector based. It doesn't feel like it when you draw, though - it has a modest selection of nice looking natural media brushes, which behave just the way you'd hope, even the watercolour. Athough you can't nerd out and edit nodes as in Illustrator (in Concepts they're hidden), you _can_ scale anything infinitely, rotate, warp, etc; including entire drawings. You can edit an old drawing at any time - change brushes, colours, & stroke widths, for instance - all long after-the-fact. And in this latest version, you can finally reshape your strokes by pushing & pulling 'em with a 'Nudge' tool, which you can set to any size you want.
There are so many great iOS drawing apps now! I'm glad I've found the one that works for me.

I like using medibang and ibisPaint x, it’s pretty easy ❤️
Btw, procreate has a Gaussian blur so that makes gradients,
And now it has text tools and you can draw your shape on the canvas hold it down and choose the shape you want.

  • @torababdullah7952
    @torababdullah7952 6 лет назад

    Brad Colbow
I would really appreciate your input. please reply.
I really would love to draw with apple pencil. it's the best i know. But the better apps in ipad need to be purchased and I have experience with and personally love pc apps, mainly photoshop. I think there are more varity apps and you get more flexibility in work with windows apps than ipad's.
...I have a strong windows based PC. If I go with a good cintiq alternative graphics tablet (from your list) which will be used with my pc would you suggest that?
    or
going with the ipad pro is the best decision.
N.B. I am not a professional artist but i want to make better and more frequent art works with a reliable media.

Concepts is definitely my favorite vector drawing app on the ipad. (especially with all the new brush customization features and textures they just added in June)
But for purely non-vector drawing apps, Procreate is definitely the king.
However, once Affinity Designer for ipad comes out, I think that’s going to replace everything for me.

I have a question. I am a real newbie to digital art & drawing apps; Procreate is the only app I've used, and I've really learned about all the features over the past 6 months or so. Thing is, I'm primarily a watercolour artist, and I want to be able to create digital line art that I can then transfer onto my paper with a projector (seeing as you don't want to do lots of pencilling & erasing on watercolour paper, as it damages it.)
So in a digital app, I want to be able to do a lot of editing of lines, resizing elements, moving things around etc. until I have a composition I'm happy with. My pieces usually involve a lot of elements arranged in a collage-type style, so there's a lot of fiddling around until I find what works. Procreate doesn't seem great for this, as things get fuzzy if you keep rescaling them. I want the line art to still look sharp, as not only will I be drawing it onto paper, but I do commission work, so I want to send the outline to clients for their approval. I'd like to also be able to add some colour, to show roughly what the finished piece will look like.
Does anyone know what app would be good for this? I've heard of the 'smart objects' feature in Photoshop and I think I might want something like that, but I'd rather use a cheaper, stand-alone iPad app that I can use on the go, especially as I doubt I'll need all the other Photoshop features. Any suggestions from Brad or people who've tried a number of iPad apps?

Which drawing tool has “vector” graphics in it? Would be great to see a review of vector graphic type drawing tools along side those that incorporate those features in a pixel-by-pixel type drawing too. I am a non-artist just trying to get something drawn out and finding these tools frustrating. Things that I thought would be common and available are non-existent, like a simple select, copy, paste of something I just drew. Seems like these tools aren’t oriented that way, but perhaps vector graphic drawing tool would be? Any suggestions? Thanks for the video!

    Brad,
Clip Studio Paint OR ANY subscription-based app, I TOTALLY REFUSE to pay/rent-a-software forever/in perpetuity, monthly subscription/“CONscription” pricing as this model IS NOT sustainable for the end-user.
I was royally P.O’ed when Astropad implemented its monthly “CONscription pricing model, especially when I paid Astropad developers their initial asking price for Astropad of $49 U.S.D. when it was first introduced in the iOS App Store.
And Astropad devs have been neglecting its Standard, single pay users, No updates in over 7 months while Astropad Pro subscriber users got an update in February 2018.

You can pay per year, too. You don’t have to pay monthly. I say it’s worth it now because Clip studio has a lot of potential but it’s a shame that you can’t just pay for the full version like on the computer version.

Brad, you say that in Procreate one can edit a line after one has laid it down. I can’t find any information about how to do that, can you help, please? I mean, it is not a vector app.
By the way, I can see how to do it with straight lines and geometric shapes, but I’m not interested in those.
In fact I have been looking for a vector app for the iPad, like Adobe Illustrator, but with a simpler interface. Do you know one?
