  • Power Pop Shakers! New Releases/Reissues #19 (Lemon Twigs; Arrows; Hives; Lemonheads; On And Ons)
This is the 19th episode of 'Power Pop Shakers!', where I talk about power pop new releases and the odd reissue.
There is a thriving international power pop underground scene, which I aim to promote with this series of videos. As much as I love the classic power pop acts like Big Star, The Raspberries, Cheap Trick and the Flamin' Groovies, it's always great to discover new bands from around the world with their own unique take on the genre.
If you go to my channel, and click on 'Playlists', you'll find a playlist called 'Power Pop Shakers!', where you can listen to the music I'm talking about. The intention is to keep adding to the playlist, so that it becomes a useful one-stop shop to discover new power pop bands.
    In this video I mention:
ARROWS 'Gotta Be Near You' ('The Complete Collection', 2CD, Cherry Red)
THE COCKTAIL SLIPPERS 'In The City' ('She's Got The Power! Female Power Pop, Punk And Garage' by Various Artists, CD, Big Beat)
THE HIVES 'Bogus Operandi' ('The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons', LP/CD, due for release on the 11th August 2023)
THE LEMONHEADS 'Into Your Arms (Acoustic)' ('Come On Feel The Lemonheads: 30th Anniversary Edition', 2CD/2LP)
THE LEMON TWIGS 'What You Were Doing' ('Everything Harmony', LP/CD, Captured Tracks)
THE LOTTERY WINNERS 'Worry' ('Anxiety Replacement Therapy', LP/CD, Modern Sky)
THE MASONICS 'Somebody Stole The Heat From My Fire' ('Outside Looking In', LP, Spinout Nuggets)
THE MASTER PLAN 'Feels Good To Feel' ('Grand Cru', CD, Rum Bar, due for release in late June 2023)
JOE McALINDEN 'Window' ('Where The Clouds Go Swimming', album, STHQ, due for release on the 14th July 2023. I also uploaded the track 'Don't Wanna Die' by his previous band Superstar)
THE ON AND ONS 'Let Ya Hair Down!' ('Let Ya Hair Down!', CD, Citadel)
PAPERNUT CAMBRIDGE 'Trip To America'/'End Of The Downs' ('Channel Suite', LP/CD, Gare Du Nord)
PLASTIC ACT 'See It In Time' ('See It In Time', 7-inch, Brain Gum)
SILVER CAR CRASH 'Pleasure Zone' ('Shattered Shine', LP, due for release in mid-June 2023)
TOUGH AGE 'Time And Again' ('Waiting Here', LP, Bobo Integral)
This is a 'Vinyl Melange Cheap 'n' Cheerful' production for vinyl and CD collectors, crate diggers and fans of the international power pop underground scene.

Hi MGK. There are quite a few power pop-related releases coming out after a bit of a dry spell. I'm glad you appreciate the notes too. If you come across any new releases yourself, please let me know. Cheers!

Love hearing and learning about new bands I've never heard of on your Power Pop Shakers series. Like your other veiwer, I'm only familiar with The Hives and Lemmonheads. Guitar bands are great and the information you provided, your Playlist should be great! Thanks again.

Hi Tarr. Thanks for your comments. It's good to have the Hives back. Guitar bands, when they get everything right, are still the best. Hopefully you'll find some new stuff on the playlist you like. Cheers, Carl

@@jtsrecordroom3963 I love all of the tracks of course. I've also since added a couple of tracks by Albert Hammond Jr. I saw him live in a small club a few years ago! ... The Music Documentaries playlist is getting bigger all the time too. I've unearthed some real gems.

It amazes me that you learn about new Canadian music before me 🇨🇦 Hearing about the Lemonheads and The Hives really takes me back. I had no idea that either act had made any music recently. I learned stuff today 🙂

Hi Brian. I saw one of the first gigs The Hives played in the UK - a free gig in a pub. They were phenomenal. I remember at one point Howlin' Pelle standing on the bar whilst he sang! ... Both Tough Age and Plastic Act are pretty decent.

I listened just now to the "Power Pop" playlist. The Arrows, The Master Plan, The Hives, Cocktail Slippers and of course.. The Lemonheads were my favs on this list. The Arrows and Evan Dano's band for the win ! All quite good, though..✌️

Arrows wrote 'I Love Rock And Roll', as you no doubt know. That Cocktail Slippers track is fun. The Lemonheads were class.

Carl - You posed a question to me on Iain’s stream that I was unable to answer. Japanese do have RUclips video channels. Some visit record stores, do digs and show purchases. Some discuss new purchases. I have uncovered more IG accounts about vinyl than RUclips accounts about vinyl. A little sketchy of a response but it’s what I’ve learned to date.

    Hi Carl
I recently bought Go To School from the Lemon Twigs, very Big Star ( it has Jody Stephens and Todd Rundgren guesting)..I've been streaming their latest but not sold on it enough yet to purchase.
I had Shame About Ray, great album.
Some interesting sounding songs on your list, will need to check some out.
    Hope you're keeping well.

Hi Rob. I've seen your video with 'Back To School'. From reviews I read at the time of its release, I thought it was supposed to be a rather self-indulgent concept album. I'll have to give it a proper listen on RUclips. Big Star are one of my all-time favourites, so I've been aware of Lemon Twigs, but never totally convinced. The brothers' dad is a good musician too in a power pop style ... You have to go a long way to find anything as good as 'It's A Shame About Ray' ... I hope you find something new on the playlist ... It was nice of Mike Vinyl Spiral to give us a shout out on his latest video. He is really hitting his stride now ... Take care, Carl

Hi JT. I wondered why I'd picked up a few new subscribers. Thanks for the shout out! I'm hoping to start posting once a week again shortly, and hopefully I'll pick up more subscribers ... I did my own fanzine for awhile and I've written for other fanzines over the years too. Various people from the then fanzine Shindig used to write for my fanzine. Shindig then became a professionally printed magazine, so I started writing for them. Amongst the articles I was most pleased about were a cover story on the Small Faces and a piece on Jokers Wild (David Gilmour's band prior to Pink Floyd). Other articles included Iron Virgin, Big Jim Sullivan, the Purple Hearts and Squire. I did a piece on Those Pretty Wrongs (Jody Stephens' band) which was only online. If you google 'shindig those pretty wrongs' it should come up ... The Gene Clark interview was in 1985. He was supporting Lindisfarne ... Talking of Shindig, the latest issue (no. 141) has a short piece on Mapache (not by me), who I recall you mentioning to me a few months ago. They have a new album called 'Reflecting Everything' out next month. All the best, Carl
