  • In this video I will explain to you the most common pronunciation and grammar mistakes English native speakers make when they are speaking Spanish. I will teach you to correctly pronounce the vowels in Spanish so you will no longer mispronounce the “a”, “e”, “i”, “o”, “u”, and you will learn the sounds of the five vowels in Spanish. You will learn to not add a “w” sound at the end of words that end with “e” in Spanish because the "w" sound as it exists in English, does not exist in Spanish. You will learn that the sound of the letter "h" is mute in Spanish, and that it only has a sound in words that actually come from English. More importantly, you will learn to pronounce all the letters of a word in Spanish. You will learn the particularities of some verbs such as “entiendo” and “comprendo” -- “to understand”; these Spanish verbs are not interchangeable, and you are probably using them incorrectly. You will learn that 'people' is singular in Spanish. Think of “people is” (sic, yes, it is sick!). You will learn that “ustedes” and “vosotros”, the plural you, are the same. One is used only in the majority of Spain and “ustedes” is used in all the Spanish Americas. These tips will make you speak clearly and correctly in Spanish. This Spanish tips will empower you to speak Spanish with more confidence. If you just started learning Spanish, these tips will give you the basis for a good start in your Spanish studies. If you are an intermediate or an advanced Spanish student, these suggestions are an excellent review of your Spanish.

    I've been studying the subject of, "Why it's hard to learn different languages than your first?" I've been doing this for many years thinking one day a epiphany will hit me in the head and at that moment -- I will have figured out this problem.
    A "epiphany" did hit me in the head! The "real" issue is not the language itself -- but, the avionics of what flies across the airwaves to a persons ears and how the brain understands what it has just heard! What I found is that, "Even in a persons own birth language -- "If there are sounds that the ear doesn't hear so that the "brain" misses or doesn't hear them, there is NO way that the brain can interpret what is heard! Instead the “Listener” must ask, “What? Or Pardon me!” “ALL THE TIME!”
    That is "True" with "ANY" sound. When the brain has to interpret sounds -- if it has enough or the correct "algorithms" to fill in the voids or blanks in what it has just been ask to understand -- then usually some sense can be made of the sounds and correctly identified. That holds true to ANY Group of Sounds be they automobiles, airplanes, bombs, bullets, music (songs), yelling and screaming or just having pleasant conversation! I have found that probably 95 percent of the Language Teachers on the Internet have NO CLUE what they are doing when it comes to teaching and specifically a language!
    Even in a persons own language there are "Many moments of misunderstanding and confusion as to what has been said." When people are trying to learn a new language/s they depend on hearing the sounds of the words “correctly” and the phrases or sentences “succinctly” sounded out. Spanish Language Teachers almost teach as if the students already know the language. They "Speed up, Slow down, Get really loud then drop the pitch to never be heard and foremost -- "They themselves can't hear what they are screwing up because everything they are saying is coming from “brain to mouth” without any thought AS to, “Did the student get it?".
    New students are the dummies trying to learn but, it seems the teachers need to be taught how to actually teach a dummy. An elementary way of learning may sound dumb (for dummies it sounds good) on the Internet but, that's how babies learn in the beginning. Words have to be sounded out slowly with a pitch the child (old dummies) can comprehend and not start crying because the teacher is speaking fast and low then high and screechy and in the meantime -- leave out the phonics that the child's (old dummies) brain is looking for to fill in the voids and gaps where he/she (she/he) has not been alive long enough (or too long) to even have a algorithm to decipher what is being said!
    Tthat being said:
    I’ve set my sites on creating a, “Teaching Language Teachers HOWTO Teach their Languages” I may not know your language at all - but, I will be able to teach the teachers “How to Teach Sounds”.

    Also your lessons help my lungs to keep expanding properly every time I inhale.
    And finally your smile helps my brain to think that there are still some beautiful things left in the world and keeps me away from my suicidal thoughts.
    Just keep helping me.

      In almost all the countries in the Spanish world, at least in the Western Hemisphere, schoolchildren are taught the refrain, "a , e, i, o, u, el burro sabe más que tú"...

    In quite a number of African languages the b tends to be pronounced like a soft v. Interesting to see that also happens in Spanish.

    in spanish the letters V and B have the same sound, it's a /b/ (like b in bear) at the begging of an utterance (when you start saying sth) or when these letters occur after an /m/ (like m in mom) or /n/ (like n in nice) sounds.
    between two vowels B and V are pronounced /β/ which sound like an English v sound but it's not a /v/ sound, to produce this sound you have to start from an English v sound but instead of pressing the upper teeth on lower lip you have to press your lips together and make a sound that sound like an English v.

      I really enjoy Ana's lessons, but her explanation on this specific matter is rather confusing and perhaps a bit imprecise. From what I was able to research, yours is the correct explanation.
      It helps me to think of it in the following terms:
      1. There are two sounds;
      2. One, /b/, is like the "normal" English "B" (which Ana calls "stronger"), the other, /β/, is also made with both lips but pushing air through them instead of closing them and "exploding" (Ana calls this the "softer" sound);
      3. Both sounds are bilabial, neither is "labidental" (not sure how to spell this in English -- neither sound uses teeth). /β/ is only labidental in specific regions like Valencia;
      4. Which sound is used has nothing to do with whether it's a B or a V, it depends on the letter placement.
      This, however, can be a very delicate topic, with native speakers strongly disagreeing with each other.
      Let the flamewar begin :D

      Mehran, I'm trying to understand the rules for the /b/ and /β/ sounds, but they seem quite erratic. How come "convivir" is pronounced "konbi'βir"? Shouldn't the first v be a /β/ by your rules...?

      Never mind, my example actually proves your point :)

      *the two consonants B and V...

    • @V21IC

      Note:
      1. The English V is sounded like the Spanish syllable "vi" like in "vibo".
      2. Whereas, the English B is pronounced the same in Spanish.
      3. Except for an exception, the Spanish B & V have the same pronunciation as the B in the English words "Bus", "Boat", "Big", "Bend", "Band" for example.

      Suena igual que la u no hay ninguna diferencia la diéresis solo indica el pronunciar y no hacerlo. Ejemplo: "siguen" si le pusiera la diéresis se pronunciaria siguuen o sigüen lo cuál es incorrecto asi que el sonido de la vocal no varía y la maestra tiene razon son 5 sonidos en castellano.
