Any suggestions on how to remove or retrieve information from a phone before recycling?

It depends. It's easiest to retrieve and export (App) data, when the Smartphone is still working. If display is broken, remove sd card and plug it into your pc (tested on linux) and hope, that your touchscreen is still working, since you normally have to authorize access to the internal storage. If phone is dead, professional data recovery is needed. Just do backups in the future to prevent data loss.
For newer devices with encrypted storage by default, a device reset should be sufficient unless you hoard state secrets. Without storage encryption, deletion and overwriting (with junkdata) would be needed.
If device is unrepairable junk, then simply destroy the memory chip before giving it to a recycling facility.

I have an old Samsung Galaxy 4 with no Sim which I still use for its great camera, an infra red add on camera and a WiFi app that shows channels in range and their channel numbers, sensitivity etc. plus which channels are the lowest being used so best to choose.

You can try installing Linux on your laptop and give it life again. Or turn your laptop into a home server.

I know this is an older video but research Ryan Montgomery he shows how ordinary cable chargers or hdmi could have a hidden chip that stores your information and can easily be accessed by hackers. If they can do this with chargers what do you think they can do with your old phones? I would think twice before offloading these at any recycling center or resale website.

Blows my mind you guys have drawers full of phones with working screens. I thought the idea was you buy the phone and use it until snap and smash the screen into a million pieces...??? No? Is that not the way? Please advise.

You don't have trash bins for batteries in every grocery store in the US? ... You even have to search for special places and there are not even showing up a lot? xD ... You can only bring any electric devices to Best Buy? .... Does not every shop and store which also sells electric devices have to take back such things (e.g. headphones, laptops, fridges, ...anything electric)? ... oh my!
    The US is so ...undeveloped.

Really you got in an advert whilst showing how well off you are! If you can’t give a really solis way of repurposing, don’t do RUclips, bag up you leads or look at telling electronics enthusiast that they can use the wires the waste is 🤯

Terrible guide guys. Glad I know what to do with my smartphones, the most easily reusable object on Earth. Next time lets focus on reusing speakers, fixing broken wires and cameras.
