thanks for uploading! maybe the most important talk i've seen from Hou on the internet! usually he's all over the place, lol. but here it seems he was prepared to give his story 'n say a few things
damn, i was zoning out because my mandarin sucks, but at around 23:00 he starts talking about how after his military service, he went to Taipei, worked for a bit to save money, then went to college. i think it was quite useless(??), save for one teacher, then jumped into some company, worked for 8 months, then made his first few films, starring "Fēng Fei Fei" so, if anyone is interested in his biography, this is worth watching.
i think the film company then somehow got a group of foreigners, which included "Edward" Yang DeChang, in order to make two omnibus films ("in our time", "the sandwich man / a taste of apple"). then at Yang's house, they watched films together, and Hou was able to see films he hadn't really seen before (italian neo-realism, etc.), with natural actings, etc., then made "Boys from Fengkui"... and i'm guessing the rest is history. :)
near the end of the vid, i think he just talks about how to film naturally: just get actors together, on the first day they might feel strange, but if you keep shooting for a few days, they will loosen up, be friends, etc. then from there a sorta atmosphere arises, hopefully one that befits the scene? lol as an example story, Liang "Tony" (i think), after every cut would look up at the Hou, expecting Hou to say something, to be directed, "do this and do that", but Hou doesn't have anything to say, he just shoots the scene. After a few more shoots he understood Hou's method of doing nothing. It's like a zen/dao story, right? =D
before that, he spent a lot of time talking about being aware of, and building a habits of being aware of, the different perspectives everyone has of every experience, including when they consume art. unfortunately, i didn't understand the CSI part, lol
