I finally came back after celebrating new years (hope you all had a good one), and I spent so long on this vid after shifting the topic from Lily Orchard and others to just this, I completely forgot to include my usual "Do not harrass" disclaimer oh my lord. Yeah that was a screw up on my part, please, don't go and leave hate comments. (Although I might be too late on that front) EDIT: Just found out the news Lily didn't even watch the show when the video was made, so the title of this vid has been slightly altered, nothing can top that shitshow now. Some day, but not today.

focusing on the real tragedy of the creator's cartoon getting cancelled, and the sympathy for him, was a nice touch. thanks for making this video! and yes, it's super important to recognize essayists have bias and not just accept everything they tell you about a piece of media or a topic. great video!
I was thinking how awesome it would be to see the grown up cast of Chowder only to be hit in the face with the fact that it was originally planned. Maybe we could get a revival in the future like they’ve been doing with other other older shows? A guy can dream…
4:20 Okay small note, the guy who made the paw patrol video isn’t pretentious at all. He admits in the video that the only reason he’s doing it is because it’s funny to analyze something like paw patrol so seriously The man wears a dog costume while talking about the problems with the police, he knows it’s stupid and heavily leans into it
dont agree with the dude but he wasent really comparing them at all he just used it as a example if he was comparing them he would make a argument for why they are even remotely as bad as each other
@@IdiotSandwich-yp2ke That's the problem however, he compared them directly, but didn't make a argument for any reason at all why he felt that way or needed to say that.
@@IdiotSandwich-yp2keUsed it as an EXAMPLE of bad things we stopped doing.. To contrast it with another thing he says is bad.. Which.. Makes it a comparison? So for example I'd say "I thought we realized a long time ago when we outlawed child marriage (because a child can't consent) that sex without consent is SA" The subject I am presenting that is bad is SA, the thing I am using as an example of another bad thing on that level is child marriage. The example, or comparison, to child marriage IS the argument that SA Is bad.
Pardon me for commenting again, but you must remember… C.H. Greenblatt is responsible for “I Had An Accident”, the SpongeBob episode with the live action gorilla who beat up Sandy and Patrick.
@@celcona I never even watched that monstrosity. There ain’t no way she ACTUALLY did that A Gardevoir rant, I’d expect. A rant about Star Wars, not so much
So let me get this straight Sarcastic "calls out" Panini, a child that doesn't know better, for having an innocent, yet comically exaggerated crush on a Chowder who, while may not return the feelings, has mutual respect for her But give the Kanker Sisters, who are teenagers that SHOULD know better, have abused and done things to the Eds that are 10x worse than anything Panini has ever done...a pass. All because the Eds are "bad people" Talk about Double-Standards
"Men get sexualy abused too and society doesn't seem to take it as seriously" is not a bad take, it's actually a pretty good topic to raise awareness about. CHOWDER IS NOT PERPETUATING THE ISSUE. CHOWDER IS NOT A SHOW ABOUT MEN BEING SEXUALLY HARASSED. IT'S A COMEDY SHOW. AND BY THE WAY, EVEN THE ISSUE WAS THAT DEEP, NO ONE IN THE SHOW EVER SAYS PANINI IS RIGHT OR THAT CHOWDER IS A PUSSY AND SHOULD GET OVER IT. I DIDN'T THINK ANY OF THIS NEEDED TO BE SAID.
Not to mention that the actual character that is like that is Endivia (Panini's master) and even then she's constantly dunked on by the others and never gets away with it....but nah let's ignore the character thst completely destroys the argument of the video
also isn't chowder, like, expressly a victim in the show? he isn't silent about how he doesn't like the pink child and every clip i've seen she's been portrayed as entirely deranged/unjustified, it's not like the show is encouraging her behavior
It’s a good take yeah and I agree that in relation to chowder it doesn’t make that much sense. However I think it’s also sad it only really gets brought up when talking about women getting SA’ed like I know they relate to each other but it shouldn’t be used to minimise the other point. And I agree we need to talk even more about it on its own
Society doesn't address it because men enjoy it when it's done by a woman but still want the victim status. Yet, no one actually wants to discuss male on male sexual violence, I wonder why....
If you thought the Cartoon Network’s later treatment of chowder was bad, Nickelodeon’s treatment on CH greenblat’s next show Harvey beaks is a lot worse
Yeah, I remember that. Harvey Beaks was an awesome show but that was like around Nick's was becoming "the spongebob channel", not alot of good shows got to see the light of day like HB
@itzfroggi22 nick wasn't becoming the spongebob channel it was the spongebob channel all they aired were their sitcoms spongebob loud house and nick jr. Back during my summers in the late 2010s. My dad still had cable and it was constantly the same stuff airing. It was awful
Yeah, Nickelodeon and Cyma broke the final straw with their treatment of Harvey Beaks, even more so than Cartoon Network executives with Chowder. If C.H. Greenblatt made a show for Disney Channel, the network’s standards and practices would batter it and think Greenblatt’s cartoon "doesn’t fit the brand".
@@masterseal0418 "Doesn't fit the brand" i.e doesn't instantly make Spongebob numbers, which is always ironic considering when Spongebob was first coming out it didn't have crazy huge numbers out of the gate as it took time for an audience to grow and come back for more.
@@chaddwickfincher5835 Yeah, I’m kinda sad to have heard about the Chowder Movie that could have been made, had Cartoon Network not gone into CN Real. I like that Chowder actually grows up as a kid/apprentice character. More episodes would have been so cool though

Cool to see you here. As someone who has seen videos from your and Chorus' channel, yours are way better. He just always seems so pretentious in a almost cartoony way and his perspective seems really limited but overly confident. As far as I could tell your videos are greatly researched to a degree that other youtubers would not dare to. Depending on the ingredients I can envision a panini that would be enjoyable alongside chowder. No one’s gonna get too worked up about what you put between the pieces of bread in the sandwich press
I agree too with we shouldn't ship the characters from the show too. It's weird to be for 10 year olds being together and focus on it. Now when they are adults? Hey man, who cares then. But yeah it's weird to care so much about who a 10 year old will be with
There really should be a law where canceled properties, after a reasonable period of time, are rightfully given back to the creators or are entered into public domain.
Fuck that - if a company outright CANCELS a show/movie/game/whatever, they should IMMEDIATELY have to surrender the IP rights to its original creator. I'm so sick of these billion dollar corps getting to eat their cake and have it too. They don't want to take the risk of investing anything into it, but they're happy to sit back and collect the passive profit from owning it. If they cannot demonstrate an active desire to actually DO SOMETHING with their IP, they shouldn't be able to just sit on it forever, like greedy dragons guarding their hoards of treasure.

I had no idea who Sarcastic Chorus was until you showed who he was and I immediately went in my head “THATS THE GUY WHO MADE 50 ANALYSIS VIDEOS ABOUT BLITZO AND STOLAS!”
As someone who was a little girl, and didn't do this (Pokémon was more important) but knew other girls who did: little girls sometimes really will just go, "I like you! I want you to be my boyfriend, because I want a boyfriend and want to one day get married and have a husband and have kids!" (Remember, little kids often want to emulate adults, which is why they play house.) And it's also not uncommon for little boys to either go "You're weird, go away" or "Ewwww, no, girls are gross, get away from me!" Panini and Chowder's "relationship" is just a cartoonish version of that. I do think that boys are way too often dismissed if they say a girl is making them uncomfortable, but that's not what Chowder is making fun of: it's poking fun at kids acting stupid because they don't understand how love actually works. I don't watch it and think "Chowder should like Panini stalking him", I think, "lol, yeah, little girls can be weirdos."
And Panini is REALLY mimicking the woman she looks up to (Endive who does the EXACT same thing to Shnitzel), so it actually does set up where she's getting it from
6:10 you know I actually sort of disagree with this critique. Even the kids shows that don’t really have a broader point to make her still influenced by the greater context of our culture and will inevitably layout some sort of moral framework, even if it’s very simple or absurdist. That’s not to say every kid shows that deep or whatever, but I don’t inherently have a problem with taking a look at something that isn’t really trying to make a moral stand and pointing out that most of the time inevitably you sort of have to to tell a story in some way… however, generally speaking a lot of of the people who wind up making these sorts of critiques don’t really have a lot going on between their ears and a lot of the conclusions they come to or just flat out strange or very poorly constructed.
It's one thing to acknowledge that a work of art exists in a cultural context and the narrative it pushes is inevitably influenced by the sensibilities of the time. That's just good analysis. But people like to stand on a soapbox and preach to the viewer about the alleged deeper problems in our society this speaks of, which really should be a topic for its own discussion rather than awkwardly trying to slap it onto a video about media analysis. I don't know if you've ever seen "Pop Culture Detective" but this describes their videos to a tee. So maybe some trope plays into some selfish power fantasy. But what can anyone really do about it? Maybe that power fantasy is an intrinsic part of the human condition. Are you going to dehumanize and insult entire population groups simply because they might have developed "problematic" power fantasies when they were teenagers? You could argue for media affecting the way people view real life and damaging their mental health, but it's a really complex topic without a simple cut-and-dry solution like "just stop featuring the popular X trope in media" because people will always want to consume escapist wish fulfillment media to an extent.

The coco video was top tier imo! The person discusses their own experience with traveling, the xenophobia they expirenced, the power of certain passports, etc. Things others may not have ever considered. Coco is more of an accessory to it, but the digestible depiction and how the film overlooks the issue are a great way of conveying it to an unfamiliar audience! They have some other videos, but the poster pretty much disappeared since. I hope they're doing well wherever they are now.
Ok but this is unironically a problem in modern shipping culture, a lot of people can't just not like a ship they have to reach for stuff to make the ship look problematic and morally wrong so no one can enjoy it, I can't believe I saw it talked on this channel out of all places.
I feel your fight. I've dabbled in shipping culture a decent amount, and there's this vibe I get where some people hate ships that don't fit their "picture perfect" idea of a relationship, void of any character interactions beyond being nice to each other.
As someone who occasionally partakes in shipping, just find a group of close friends to gush about and talk with. Don’t try to engage with the collective internet because you will inevitably come across people that take cartoon romance way too seriously. Just find that handful of people that you know are cool and stick with them solely.
This is a problem with most modern internet subcultures now. People have become way too emotional for subjects that aren't important in the grand scheme of things.
LEGIT!! People forget that shipping isn’t forcing anything to be cannon, it’s just “what if character a and character b were in a relationship?” It’s just for fun and ppl nowadays think that if the ship is not possible bcs of xyz, than you can’t ship it.
Reminds me of Proship vs Anti Ship.. The Internet Fandom's Version of the Left vs Right wing politics. I don't want to discuss it further since it gave me type 6 brainrot
I think analyses of kids media from an adult POV can be interesting, particularly analyzing how media might perpetuate certain ideas. This Cowder video is incredibly wild though.
This reminds me of how the sonic community collectively perceives Amy Rose's pre-Ian personality as some kind of abusive stalker and not a literal child with a crush
Yeah, I don't understand why people tend to slap adult issues on characters who are minors. It feels so wrong, considering they're children in the context of their media, such as in Chowder's case
TBF, I used to think that Sonic was in his early 20s, and Amy was in her late teens. It wouldn't surprise me if other people thought the same thing. That does change the dynamic a bit from how it is canonically.
Ok no, that Ed Edd n Eddy video pissed me off. Not only cuz it showcases Sarcastic Choruses hypocricy, but how much they generalized the Eds as just equally as bad as the Kankers. Which if you watched the show for longer than a few clips, they're not. The worse they do, is try scamming people for candy money. Eddy is the only person in that group, who you could consider morally in the wrong, but even then, most of the cul de sac bullies him quiet a bit, Ed's too oblivious to see why what he does could be bad, he's a very kind but low IQ friend and Double D, while in on the plans, does show actual empathy and remorse for their fuck ups, even standing up to Eddy in later seasons. So saying they deserve three attention starved, hormonally charged, savage trailer park girls is soo wrong on a lot of levels
What’s funny is the rest of the kids (besides Kevin and Sarah) are actually pretty chill with the edds when they aren’t scamming them, even Eddy to an extent. It’s similar to how Panini and Chowder are, where when she isn’t being a psycho chick, she and Chowder get along fine. It’s almost like these shows are comedies and the humor comes from the over the top reactions to situations .
@woodman3926 Exactly, plus, the point of the show, was not to make Ed's the villains, they're social outcast. Danny Antonucci himself even stated, that it's a comedy show, about kids being kids, their behavior isn’t ment to be analysed in depth, to see who's good and bad, cuz they're kids.
FOR REAL!!! Hell it was even showed constantly in the show that the other kids always react qith either amger or dissapointment over the Ed's schemes, while in a "really man?" kind of way, whie with the Kankers it's always disgust and fear, there's a clear moral limit here
Not to mention Edd is usually the only one of their friend group pushing back on Eddy much. He usually only ends up going along for his own self interests or because they're his friends and he did his best to convince them to stop.
The fact that I'm subscribed to him, even though I'm not the slightest bit interested in 70% of the stuff he hyperfixates on, says something about me I don't like.
"I'm a good person, and good people don't laugh at this" I honest to God do not trust those who claim how "good" they are and try to retain a squeaky clean image. It comes off as pretentious and makes me wonder what they're hiding.
Pretentious essays can be fun if you’re in the mood for it but it can get pretty annoying when analyzing kids shows. He makes some fair points about portraying male victims in media but chowder is an extremely nonsensical show that should never be treated as something serious. It’s fun to over analyze something on occasion but chowder was never meant to be a serious romance. These characters are meant to be dumb kids trying to mimic adults but don’t understand how an adult relationship works because they’re kids. That’s the joke.
I tend to stick up for the shipping community a lot, since they tend to get over-hated by the greater internet when they aren't really any more cringe than other fandom niches... but I will admit this kind of warped perspective is what happens when you're in that particular type of space for a prolonged period of time. His frustration with the trope of the overly-obsessed love-interest isn't unfounded, but the conclusions he drew and the example tried to make were poor. I remember hearing a joke once that went, "Whenever a new anime drops, the boys and girls in the new fandom go to opposite sides of a room. The boys start having passionate, silly arguments about which male character can kick which other male character's ass; the girls start having passionate, silly arguments about which male character is riding which other male character's ass."
@@tabbender1232the hell you mean? It’s not worth hating because it’s harmless at its core; just something people are passionate about and have fun with. The few who take it seriously and make it kinda weird don’t represent the entirety of it. A single toxic professional American football fan doesn’t make the whole ass nfl something to hate. That’s just asinine
I never liked Sarcastic Chorus. I dont trust the media critiques of a grown man who makes a living off pretentiously complaining about shipping drama in kids cartoons to a bunch of 13 year olds and man children
You can tell that these guys who make 30 minute analysis videos on the serious themes of children's cartoons yearn for something more challenging and made for adults but yet keep going back to making essays on The classicism of Sanjay and Craig
I really don't understand why these people will try to do shit like "exploring the fascism of Toy Story 3" when series that *actually* explore the topic like Killzone exists. It's confusing because in all honesty I feel like they'd have an easier time doing it with a series that actually adds weight to the theme vs trying to point out little sporadic nods and references like a paranoid schizophrenic.
Haven’t watched this video but the worst “essay” i’ve ever seen was from this guy who took the story on Hisashi Ouchi, the guy who’s cells basically all died after radiation poisoning, and just straight up lied and slandered the doctors, making it sound like Ouchi was begging for death while being experimented on for science, when actually he wanted treatment and consented to every procedure until he couldn’t physically communicate anymore. After that his family consented in his stead and asked the doctors to keep trying to treat them (against doctor advice, although i wouldn’t call them evil either) until finally they signed a dnr and he passed away. Just really scummy to turn a real, very tragic story into some stereotypical Evil Doctor story for views. I don’t watch that guy anymore.
Comments like this are the reason like to dislike ratios are unreliable. I click on a channel, the videos get good reception so I and others don't question it. Another big youtuber makes a video on said channel so now we hate them all of a sudden. I'm starting to think the average youtube viewer are just consumers.
honestly knowing what i know now given that i haven't even seen this guy before watching the video i feel like mush would have covered him just not for this reason or in this way
@MachineDoctor1 Tbh fair, I wouldn't say people hate him because of this. I just think its more 'he had a very bad take, didn't put his best foot forward, and skewed the nature of Chowder and Painini's relationship because he disliked the outcome'. This video, is more of a second opinion, because bro needed someone to tell him out for being too biased on videos that are meant to be objective, but we'll see if Sarcastic Chorus takes the L or double-down if he responds.
One of the things I notice in these presumptuous video essays, where most of the "hit pieces" are born, is precisely a frustrated and desperate attempt to prove something that should have been buried back in the Satanic Panic era, but many people can't let go of: the idea that fiction has the capacity to alienate an audience to the point of being used as a "weapon" by the sociocultural bogeyman of the week. There are a lot of people out there who are incapable of understanding that human beings and the concept of society are something complex, to the point of inventing these thousand and one conspiracies about how a cartoon is being used by tyrants to "tame the masses" and normalize repulsive behavior, instead of accepting that, maybe, just maybe, people sometimes just wants to have a good laugh and no one wants to be forced to conform to any ideology, especially if it is an ideal that is not very popular or very disruptive to current social standards.
These “I’M A GOOD PERSON GUYS LOOK AT HOW MORALLY GREAT I AM” individuals always rub me the wrong way. Comes off as extremely insecure and petty at best, and ‘Man, I wonder what kind of skeletons are in their closet’ at worst.
Its similar to the "thou protest too much" type, Like if every time we talked I was randomly like "oh MAN do I hate smelling feet! Isn't smelling stinky feet just the worst?!?!" You would eventually think I like big, sweaty, green-stink-line feet.. which I hate
Kind of reminds me of Daft Pina. That cartoon "critic" that went after Storytime animators, ruined a podcast, and then deleted his channel once people started to find his skeletons and tried to start over.
Him saying Panini's case is "double standards" while the Kankers's is "justified because they are villians and the Eds kinda deserve it" is the peak of irony
Also worth noting that he's a fan of Catradora from She-Ra, a ship that by Nate Stevinson's own admission took some...inspiration from a toxic relationship of theirs. The jokes write themselves 🤣
I get what he is saying because the harassers being the villains makes does make the whole thing not being as bad....but still Panini is a terrible example of this considering how mild the character actually is.
@@ironmaster6496 You get the sense of what he's saying, but you ought to understand that what he claimed to have a problem with is with the _acts_ themselves rather than the targets. Being able to excuse the Kankers because he finds the Eds "worthy targets" of acts that are degrees worse than what he excoriated Panini for betrays the reality that-- apart from his _actual_ problem being with the ship being endgame, rather than Panini's actions-- his declarations of the morality of acts are dictated by their objects rather than by the acts themselves. That is, he's a hypocrite. And, like many shippers (and internet nerds in general), he uses argumentation to give his positions an air of legitimacy rather than those arguments actually reflecting his thought processes underlying his opinions.
Doesn’t he also like Miraculous Ladybug? The show with an episode involving Marinette - a teenage girl who should know better unlike Panini - breaking into her crushes house in a disguise to go to a party. But the writer of Miraculous thinks Marinette is perfect and can’t do any wrong so it’s fine to him I guess.
There's one more form of video essay, the most common: the "retrospective" that is really a wikipedia-level overview, or simply going over the plot of something point-by-point with next to no original commentary, limites to a couple minutes at the end if any. The amount of channels that do this is ridiculous, and the number of creators I stopped watching after realizing this was the extent of their content was depressing.
I remember watching PhantomStrider back in the day, and I kinda saw him as a more positive Mr. Enter. Yeah, he was repeating some of the same bad takes as Enter, but he also emphasized taking things with a pinch of salt and was overall more pleasant in his presentation. It also probably helped that he stuck to Top 10 lists instead of full-blown essays.
Yeah, PhantomStrider has always been more digestible than Mr. Enter. Even if I don't agree with everything he says, I can respect that he acknowledges those are his opinions and is open to hearing the opinions of others. Him being just a generally positive guy is another positive of him. It's something I feel like this side of youtube is missing.
It probably helps that, before each list, PhantomStrider would say something along the lines of, “If you like these cartoons that I hate, that’s perfectly fine! These are just my opinions!”
yeah i'll have to agree, i don't hate enter but he really did blew everything out of proportion while strider has the style of an actual fan who is just sharing his opinion, i mean for starters he didn't demonized drawn together.

The rants about Bo Peep likely triggered some false alarms; I mean yeah, the cause of this one issue of many is related to "girl power", but not only are there multiple other issues (like y'know, Bo doing all of what she does, as a goddamn porcelain doll?), but also how it contributes to the movie as a whole and all its other issues, like nostalgia, gaslighting the audience, generally incompetent characters, the list goes on. They could've made a new character do the same things she does, and at least half of her issues would be immediately gone.
@@hi-ougidemonfang I hate that video because he’s unironically pretentious about it, when I watched the movie on my own before seeing reviews I found it to be a great 8/10 movie. Modern youtube videos are 7x what they should be in length. Videos that were an hour in 2015 are now 6 hours, 30 minute videos are now 2 hours and 1 minute videos are now 7 minutes. Modern youtubers love wasting your time (this video itself could probably be cut into 10 minutes, for example)
isn't that the one where the guy says them remodeling the house layout for the opening scene (a very normal thing to do in an animated movie) is the animators intentionally attempting to gaslight the audience lol? he even doubled down in a later video where he debates another youtuber and said he believes the creators are legitimate abusers because of this

Poor Kajetokun only got 7 mil views from it. (Still incredible though)
Saying the Ed Boys are all bad people so they deserve it is a double standard. Not only that but I think only Eddy can be considered bad, and he's still a kid that just has bad influences. Ed will fiercely protect his little sister in spite of how she often treats him like he's a nuisance and Edd is usually the voice of reason and morality.
@@cosmicspacething3474 I think that's a subtle but critical misread. If they need to create a contraption for the scam, he's the one to make it. That's more than trying to cushion the inevitable failure-- that's being complicit. Edd wants the same kind of thing Eddy and Ed want, but he also has more sense and empathy.
Also to add on, saying rape or abuse is cool because you hate someone is super gross. Like I hate say funny German people in the 40s, but that stuff to them is still gross and horrible. Like it shouldn't be allowed at all or supported
7:22 Just gotta say, the curtain and speaker icons are such a nice touch. Not being able to tell what's from the piece being critiqued is one of the most frustrating things about video essays
This is my problem with most of the animated video essays these days. Most of them seem to be made by adults who still think like children, and are so reluctant to grow up that they want to force mature themes into these very shows. As if they refuse to watch more age-appropriate stuff. It's not bad to rewatch things from your childhood, but justifying that you're still stuck at that age by forcing serious things to say "hey, look, this kid show that i still watch at almost 30 has very mature themes, that makes me mature too" says a lot about those people.
Pretty limited pool in the animated space. You got Hazbin Hotel, Invincible, Smiling Friends, and uh... Not much else. Even then Smiling Friends is just a show to watch while you are high. If supply met demand things would probably change.
i think these opinion bashing or try to make all politically correct (forcefully, not in related term in the show) just seems so out of place in that form of Cartoon shows like Chowder or Spongebob. You cant always have like adult topics in any of it. its not impossible depending on direction you go. what it matters is how is your creation, characters and your themes you focus on. like some shows did mature point but you dont always have all of it. Not all shows can have the same thing over and over. and somebody focuses far away than what the show was meant to be. thats really Obnoxiously wrong.
@haruhirogrimgar6047 You act like there arent literal thousands of animes geared towards adult audiences. And reducing Smiling Friends to a stoner show is kind of insulting to the shows comedy lol
Honestly, I feel like that about a lot of "geek culture" stuff. Star Wars and video games in particular. Star Wars has child level themes but it's seen as this temple of geekdom that both fans and studios alike are adamant in pushing more mature themes into them. And then of course the discourse becomes toxic because both the people involved in the projects and the people consuming it are overgrown children themselves.
What annoys me the most is that there is a point to be made about this double standard of female on male abuse being played as a joke. However, Chowder is NOT the thing to use as an example.
“The Worst Pretentious Essay I’ve Seen On RUclips” is a great title for a video that took 7 minutes to get to the main topic because it had to explain what an essay is.
Also this video takes three out of five minutes out of The Creator segment to go on a "haha tism haha shipping" tangent instead of actually talking about the creator
6:26 I ADORE How Toy Story 4 Destroyed Everything. It's so angry, so batshit insane, so schizophrenically edited, dude put more effort into that video than any one person put into the subpar movie he's screaming about for 6 hours. It's a piece of art in itself, I could watch it on loop for the rest of my life.
My favorite part was when he made a schizo theory about the director sabotaging the movie because he was involved with Inside Out and that was a far better movie. Honestly, the whole ending part was a whole new level of schizo. A shame because his Ace Attorney videos are some of my favorites
Since you've watched it, please do tell me: What's the main focal point of the video? Is it Woody choosing to be a lost toy instead of going back with the others? Because I have the strangest feeling it's that, considering it's such a massive change compared to the other 3 movies. I don't think it's personally a bad idea, but I feel like MANY people would find it absolute anti-christ material
Crazy how this year has given us some true bangers in terms of absolute garbage youtube video essays. From that Doctor Skipper's Godzilla video, IPOS's conservative horror hitpiece, to that one random guy that complained about raceswapping 2 entirely different characters in the new Fairly Oddparents show, we've really gotten some major trainwrecks, and they're so beautiful to see.
Jelloapocalypse’s So This Is One Piece can be added as well, heard it’s a train wreck that takes One Piece in such bad faith it unified fans and haters of One Piece to clown on him
@@woodman3926 I don't know if I would count that as a video essay since it's more of a joke video "trying" to poke fun at the series. It's still pretty bad, but I'm mostly talking about videos that genuinely try to analysis a certain piece of media.
@@woodman3926 Jelloapocalypse is a total clown. Guy ruined the English dub of an anime, and got blacklisted from the industry because of it, all because he thought "he could do better". Also his old Vote video, where he demanded everyone vote for his preferred party in the 2016(?) election, which even if you were on his side was just a bad move.
Soon as I saw that thumbnail, I knew who this was going to be about. A lot of his "critical" analysis videos can really be summed up as "this is bad because it isn't how I would personally write it."
Call me cynical but I've come to the conclusion that no matter how intricate, well reasoned and verbose a critique is; it's ultimately just "this is bad because it isn't how I would personally write it". Not jumping at his defense btw, just some food for thought.
@@static7579 Its because art is in every form of it, personal! If it doesnt make you feel anything then it has failed as an art piece. However a lot of people who try their hand at critique-ing stuff dont understand that context is king. You cannot critique a comedy with the standards of like a drama. You cannot critique a movie with the standards of a book. Etc etc. A large part of learning how to do proper visual art critique was me being taught how to understand the context of the art piece. Be it the socio-economic status of the artists, the country, or even the political state of said country. It can get complex and it can be difficult to learn to focus on the technical skills and end result as apposed to your own feelings about the piece
Need to remember that "media literacy" is a one way road. Lefty video essayists have it, everyone else doesn't regardless of what opinion is expressed.
That wouldn’t even make sense if you were comparing it to an actual example of “mocking victims and making light of an issue that’s still a problem today”. Like they’d both be bad, but nothing like each other
I feel like your video essay categories lack a place for "the love letter" where the creator gushes about the media uncritically, and "the walkthrough" where the creator just sums up the plot with little to no insight. 5:11
Talking about domestic abuse in Chowder is like talking about capitalism in Ed Edd N Eddy; rambling about things in cartoons that don't exist for the sake of media literacy or something
My favorite thing about RUclips comment sections is that people usually comment before they even watch anything, so they try to divine what the video is about from the title and come up with the most bot-like comments ever
22:30 That dude serious face. He´s talking about childs slapstick cartoon like it is russian post-war literature, while at the same time giving off weird incel vibes. I was waiting for the day Sarcastic Chorus got dragged… Fun side note! Despite all his complaining about Panini and Chowder, who are just kids in a slapsticks comedy, he supports Catra and Adora from She-Ra, a ship very much known for having domestic violence 80% of the time. In short, he is absolutely a hypocrite.
@@platinumg.8614 Oh no, he dropped the whole show and whined because "Stolitz isn't going my way, I'm done with this show for my mental health wahh wahh". Certified "guy who needs to touch grass".
@platinumg.8614 Oh that ship fucking sucks lmao. Im not going to lose sleep over it being canon now but i can say the way it’s been handled is abysmal. I could write an entire essay on it, but it’s not relevant to the video. About time Sarcastic Chorus finally left that show.
@@platinumg.8614"Stolitz" needs to be studied, if it wasn't already I've never seen writing so counterintuitive and derail everything in a story, while also being so shallow and artificial as to not justify it All because say gex jokes was a comedic crutch moment one, and the VA's apparently thought it'd be cute
What's the issue if he cries for Stolitz and then leaves? Seriously, the "hE nEedS tO ToUcH gRaSs" was uncalled for. Having watched your video, Enter's follow up, and the original, I think I find myself agreeing with yours the most. I think yours summed it up best, it's "petty shipping grudge". These videos that trash certain pairings or characters just come off as being samey. Lots of cherry picking, memoryholing positive traits, taking things out of context (sometimes maliciously, as you pointed out), and are more often than not just being done to troll their fans and be mean. But what's worse about these videos are the ones that soapbox as you say, to try and outright SHAME people for being fans of these character or pairings. It truly crosses into the realm of being a concern troll, and it's why I personally avoided most of Chorus's content and outright despise Enter's. Enter's response to this was limp as well. He fell into the same exact trapping of "If I don't find it funny, nobody on Earth does". He's not an expert on comedy. You're not an expert on comedy. And believe me, I'm not an expert on comedy. Moreso, he accuses YOU of cherrypicking, which is an outright lie and projection. I thought this video gave amble material on why a person might like or dislike this couple. I've been in plenty of fan bases of shows similar to Chowder, yet have shipping wars that are just as ugly. SvTFOE, FoP, TGAMM come to mind. Someone really needs to tell these folks that the best way to convince people to like your ship or your takes isn't to take a liquid shit all over other people's favorites.
Bringing up how the uploader flashed a domestic abuse hotline number on a video analysis of Chowder of all things got me bursting out in laughter irl because of how absurd it is. It's the equivalent of flashing the same number on a video analysis of Tom & Jerry maybe potentially not liking each other from all the fights they get in.
Ah, my favorite form of video essay. "Hey, you know that gag from this kids cartoon? It's actually problematic and doesn't conform to my personal standards today." There's something about the "pretentious" video essay writer, which makes them think the audience is brain damaged and can't distinguish fiction from reality. As if the audience needs to be told left from right, or they might forget to breath. In this case chorus is using "video analysis" as a shield to hide behind as he lies about an earnest creators work because he didn't get the shipping drama he wanted

I'll share an incredibly embarrassing story from my childhood. When i was in the second grade about 8 years old, a new kid joined our class who i had a "crush" on. I say "crush" because obviously i was 8 and didnt know how to process my feelings, so it was probably more that i was overwhelmed by how cool and different he was to an 8 year old girls mind. But i thought it mustve been a crush, so every recess i would play "kiss tag" with him where i would try to chase and kiss him and he'd run away, because he didnt want to be kissed by me. This only happened during recess, in class i never really did anything to him. I also never actually kissed him because i was such a shit runner. Halfway through the year i realised i didnt actually care that much for him, i stopped chasing him, and moved on with my life. Was that an incredibly embarrassing part of my life? Yes. Do i feel really bad for taking up that boys recess for such a long time? Absolutely. But would i do it now? *hell fucking no*. Im 23 and have a job and autism The point is kids *do* do embarrassing invasive things. Its not good, but its kind of to be expected. I wouldnt be surprised if other guys had similar experiences they could relate to. And i think thats what chowder is trying to convey. A small relateable moment of childhood of another kid that wont leave you the fuck alone. I can imagine a young boy having a tiring day at school with a classmate not leaving him alone, then coming home to watch cartoons and seeing chowder being in a similar situation to him, and finding comfort that he's not alone in that situation. And even though it might be played for laughs, the jokes come more from chowders reaction, not what panini is actually doing. Because chowder very clearly does not like it. So when this guy tries to say its making light of male victims because if its a woman its ok, i dont buy it because its always made very clear chowder does not like it, and panini is a psycho. And also, of course, THEYRE FUCKING 10. I never really grew up with chowder, but im pretty sure that if i watched it when i was the age i was doing the stuff i was doing, seeing panini being a creep wouldnt encourage me to keep doing it. I would not go "oh ok panini is a girl and im a girl so im allowed to do it!" I really dont think there was a rise of abusers and abuse victims because a bunch of kids watched a 10 year old boy get stalked by a 10 year old girl in a cartoon. To actually "think critically" of thia show is not to go "wow theyre making light of women-on-men abuse", its to go "yeah this show had some uncomfortable moments but its about 10 year olds who dont know how to process their emotions yet, and its a small part of the overall show that can be overlooked"
Bad person does bad thing? Gasp. Next you will say Lex Luther is evil. Guy sadly is too used to or believe every cartoon needs a super in depth gray area villain who is misunderstood or need motivation outside just being an ass
As an autistic girl who is part of the shipping culture and is into vivzie's work, I also kind of had a mixed feeling about sarcastic chorus but didn't know why other then I didn't agree on some of the things he says. Him basically calling a ten year old pink bunny girl a sexual predator answered my question.
@Pinkythebunny9721 one question. Have you watched his video about Sheldon from My Life As A Teenage Robot, and if so, what do you think of his deduction of Sheldon Lee as an incel? I know this is weird and random and I get REALLY into a lot of this entertainment stuff(I am autistic, too), but I just want to know because I have my own views about it, but I wanted to hear it from someone else who isn't one of his fans agreeing with him in the comments of his videos.
@@william3100I have not seen my life as a teenage robot and I've only seen like a part of that video. The only thing I can say about that though is that while you can argue that he should know better since he seems to be older, but at the same time they are all teenagers so....its to be expected and sarcastic chorus is just trying to call another kid a horrible person.
@Pinkythebunny9721 yeah, I agree, and I also feel like it's a bit unfair to call some of Sheldon's behavior as problematic considering it was made during a time when jokes about teen boys spying on their crush was common in media featuring that. Hell, Back To The Future literally had Marty's dad George when he was a teen looking into Loraine's room with binoculars while lying in a tree across from her house. There's also times when the creators actually try to make Sheldon a very good guy who is good for Jenny. Some of that stuff in the show I think is probably due to poor writing, but I'm not going go into that. That's an entirely different subject and you haven't even watched the show, so I'm not gonna bore you with my ramblings on that lol.

But give the Kanker Sisters, who are teenagers that SHOULD know better, have abused and done things to the Eds that are 10x worse than anything Panini has ever done...a pass. All because the Eds are "bad people"

Also pretty sure Ed is like "special needs". Damn I really didn't wanna overthink Ed Edd and Eddy like this lmao.
And I agree we need to talk even more about it on its own
B-but how are they gonna get those sweet views and clicks if they don’t pull points out of thin air?
Society doesn't address it because men enjoy it when it's done by a woman but still want the victim status. Yet, no one actually wants to discuss male on male sexual violence, I wonder why....
If you thought the Cartoon Network’s later treatment of chowder was bad, Nickelodeon’s treatment on CH greenblat’s next show Harvey beaks is a lot worse

Yeah, Nickelodeon and Cyma broke the final straw with their treatment of Harvey Beaks, even more so than Cartoon Network executives with Chowder. If C.H. As someone who was a little girl, and didn't do this (Pokémon was more important) but knew other girls who did: little girls sometimes really will just go, "I like you! I want you to be my boyfriend, because I want a boyfriend and want to one day get married and have a husband and have kids!" (Remember, little kids often want to emulate adults, which is why they play house.)
And it's also not uncommon for little boys to either go "You're weird, go away" or "Ewwww, no, girls are gross, get away from me!"
Panini and Chowder's "relationship" is just a cartoonish version of that.
Also in the finales chowder as an adulto says essentially How childlish we were

Yeah, I think the cars ableism and coco videos he showed were actually pretty good
It's one thing to acknowledge that a work of art exists in a cultural context and the narrative it pushes is inevitably influenced by the sensibilities of the time.

That does change the dynamic a bit from how it is canonically.
sometimes people forget that essentially every main character is a child. I think Rouge and Vector are the only exceptions?
I really like how much respect Ian has in the Sonic community, that they treat his name like an event that changed everything.
@Guymanbot97 I don't respect him so much as accept that he's the lesser evil, it's better than the self deprecating nonsense that we had before
Ok no, that Ed Edd n Eddy video pissed me off.
@woodman3926
Exactly, plus, the point of the show, was not to make Ed's the villains, they're social outcast. Danny Antonucci himself even stated, that it's a comedy show, about kids being kids, their behavior isn’t ment to be analysed in depth, to see who's good and bad, cuz they're kids.
@@no_fishman9669 Exactly!

Honestly, people will change their tune if the genders are reversed
I tend to stick up for the shipping community a lot, since they tend to get over-hated by the greater internet when they aren't really any more cringe than other fandom niches... but I will admit this kind of warped perspective is what happens when you're in that particular type of space for a prolonged period of time. His frustration with the trope of the overly-obsessed love-interest isn't unfounded, but the conclusions he drew and the example tried to make were poor.
I remember hearing a joke once that went, "Whenever a new anime drops, the boys and girls in the new fandom go to opposite sides of a room.

Its similar to the "thou protest too much" type,
Like if every time we talked I was randomly like "oh MAN do I hate smelling feet! Isn't smelling stinky feet just the worst?!?!" You would eventually think I like big, sweaty, green-stink-line feet.. which I hate

Funnily, I've seen the same topic covered much better.
Same here you called it well.
I remember watching PhantomStrider back in the day, and I kinda saw him as a more positive Mr. Enter. Yeah, he was repeating some of the same bad takes as Enter, but he also emphasized taking things with a pinch of salt and was overall more pleasant in his presentation.

It probably helps that, before each list, PhantomStrider would say something along the lines of, “If you like these cartoons that I hate, that’s perfectly fine! These are just my opinions!”
As he always said in the beginning of every video it's just his opinion.

They were basically acquaintances at most. I don't even care about this ship, I just find it frustrating that people have completely ruined the meaning of "grooming". Out of 189 episodes, Ferb and Vanessa only interacted in 7 episodes as kids. And somehow, she's a groomer.

Just a small correction, but the original uploader of the 'It's over 9000' video was actually Kajetokun in 2006. (I actually have a comment on that video dated back 17 years ago) I remember him because of his 'The balls are inert' and 'I hope my body can take it' vids. (The latter of which my brother named his Xbox live gamertag as "Imgettinghuge" after) Seems this is a pretty great example of someone else getting the attention of someone else's work by reuploading.

Even Eddy was redeemed by the end of the movie, so I wouldn't even call him bad
It’s almost like he doesn’t truly believe in what he preaches about, like most types of these video essayists.
This. Ed is just trying his best, and Edd is the one who gets dragged into everything
Kinda like Lily Orchard, it feels like she has never watched an adult show in her life and exclusively watches kid shows
Pretty limited pool in the animated space.
@haruhirogrimgar6047
You act like there arent literal thousands of animes geared towards adult audiences.
3:38 “there are some video essays that are absurdly bad” with the background just being lily orchard videos killed me.

But ok, this is just internet being internet.
We're starting the new year right by acknowledging sarcastic chorus as a weird strange man
Bringing up how the uploader flashed a domestic abuse hotline number on a video analysis of Chowder of all things got me bursting out in laughter irl because of how absurd it is. It's the equivalent of flashing the same number on a video analysis of Tom & Jerry maybe potentially not liking each other from all the fights they get in.
There was a Tom & Jerry analysis video where the creator used a s--cide hotline number
Please, please, please tell me it was that episode where the sit on the train tracks lmao
@Jatbee0815 Yeah it was an analysis of that episode
@sonicfanboy3375 Oh! I remember that episode! I completely forgot about it! That's insane but hilarious.
Ah, my favorite form of video essay.
"Hey, you know that gag from this kids cartoon? It's actually problematic and doesn't conform to my personal standards today."
There's something about the "pretentious" video essay writer, which makes them think the audience is brain damaged and can't distinguish fiction from reality.

Im 23 and have a job and autism
The point is kids *do* do embarrassing invasive things.
"you might start to think that Lucy is an asshole" ... yeah? that's part of her character?

@Pinkythebunny9721 one question. Have you watched his video about Sheldon from My Life As A Teenage Robot, and if so, what do you think of his deduction of Sheldon Lee as an incel?
I know this is weird and random and I get REALLY into a lot of this entertainment stuff(I am autistic, too), but I just want to know because I have my own views about it, but I wanted to hear it from someone else who isn't one of his fans agreeing with him in the comments of his videos.
@@william3100I have not seen my life as a teenage robot and I've only seen like a part of that video.
