In 1863, the British faced resistance from a Yousafzai Pathan branch led by Mubarik Shah, who declared Jihad. A final expedition aimed to quell them. Bad planning led to a halt in the Umbeyla Pass, losing surprise. By October 29, 6,000 British troops confronted 15,000 freedom fighters. Brigadier General Chamberlain opted for a defensive strategy at Eagle's Nest and Crag Picket. Crag Picket witnessed intense combat.
After weeks of stalemate, reinforcements arrived, and Major-General Garvock took command. A breakout on December 15 led to swift victory. Umbeyla village was entered on December 16, and an agreement with local tribes led to the destruction of the freedom fighter stronghold at Malka. The Umbeyla Field Force withdrew by December 23.
British losses: 238 killed, 670 wounded; freedom fighters likely lost 3,000. Crag Picket, now called katlgar, bears witness to its violent past. The Umbeyla campaign is often overshadowed by later battles. Memorials exist in Mardan's old cemetery and churches in India and Pakistan.
