- James welcomes Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin of The Smashing Pumpkins who are going on tour with Jane's Addiction, the band they opened with 30 years ago. And Billy talks about the process of making a 33-song triple album rock opera before explaining what inspired the video for their classic song "Today" which the band is performing on the show.

I just hope it's more qualitative than cyr. You could have took the good songs from shiny and cyr and made one 12 track amazing album. Quantity should take a back seat to quantity. Saw them live in Greensboro this week. Wonderful show.

Billy, I've just read your 2014 inteview, where you say that SP's fanbase is gone. Well, no, I haven't gone anywhere, Billy. I live in Russia and still sometimes meet people wearing ZERO t-shirt at some alternative rock concerts. The fan base has not gone anywhere, we're just a bit too busy with kids, margages, divorces and working till midnight at the office. Idk, I still need your music.

I any not like everything Billy does. But man I respect his work ethic and his prolific song writing ability. But when the stars along and you are in the right space for some his art it's just a special thing. Goat level talent. Just the combination of his lead guitar work, song writing ability, ability as a singer, ability as a live performer, and prolificness of output.

I love seeing that they are being jokey and being light-hearted here. Also it's a departure from the past, where they typically play their new single on late shows. It's clear that they are trying hard to get publicity by making fan-friendly decisions. This is in contrast to 10-15 years ago, where Billy was more combatative in interviews, and tried his hardest to dismiss his older music.
Remember: stop living in the pass!!!
@@srt4b I'm not though. I love lots of their newer music. But I think Billy realizes that he can get better publicity by playing older songs on tv....that's all.
@@stratstrat644 I don't think he's doing it for the publicity. If you've followed his Instagram over the past few years, you can see how being a father and being in a stable long-term relationship has made him a more mellow and positive person in general. In that light, the lyrics to Today make even more sense now than they did 10-15 years ago.
He said in an interview a few years ago that the reunion was to get some of their old fans back, and then they could go back to being the art group he always wanted to be - hence why they're going around pedalling their tired old 90s hits which Billy hates to do, and hence why recent material like Cyr and no doubt this new 'rock opera' album will sound nothing like their old stuff.
(I'm a fan of the newer material, by the way. I'm just pointing out that he's always been full of it.)

I love seeing the original lineup take the credit. But, seriously would like it if Jeff was included as someone who is just as crucial. Jeff has paid his dues and deserves to be given so much more credit when it comes to promotion. Perhaps, he chose not to, but for me Jeff really is part of the Pumpkins now just as much as James or Jimmy are. Just sayin...

Not sure if hes being serious, but 33 songs 3 album concept rock opera? That's insane. I can't even imagine trying to come up with ten songs. Seems like Billy always comes up w/ crazy ideas and takes on a huge workload and ends up working himself into exhaustion and burning himself and the band out. It should be called, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness part 2 lol. I remember him announcing that they were doing a double album at the 1994 mtv vma and it ended up being the Mellon Collie album. As much success as that album brought them there was just as much negative situations too but they all seem like they're in a good place mentally and I wish them the best of luck. I still till this day look forward to and anticipate hearing new albums and music from the Pumpkins. 🎃

i love darcy but she genuinly has mental issues and by her own admission forgot how to play bass
its true. she's so far gone these days that its almost impossible or pointless to include her in anything. she's become a mysterious enigma for over a decade with nothing worthwhile to show for it.
she had a solid chance to revitalize herself when Billy opened the door for her to come back and she blew it.
Just in time, at the peak of their relevance (give or take 30 years).

Good interview and all. But I do wish that when they play songs on these shows, they'd sometimes play new material. I know classics are safe bets, but some of their new stuff is GREAT.
Telegenix from the last album is amazing, and catchy enough that i'm sure it'd go down well with mainstream audiences.
