Slim Whitman is one of the nicest gentlemen ever to grace the music industry. I have loved his music for decades. Only wish I could have seen him perform in person.
Andy Kaufman adored Slim Whitman and was a genius in his own right. Slim Whitman has the nicest falsetto i've ever heard. I even rate it above Orbison :)
Slim is a friend of mine and I ran The Slim Whitman Appreciation Society of the U.S. for 23 years. I asked him him if he lipped synced this and he said no. He did do that on the "All My Best" TV LP. They shot the commercial at 2:00 AM the LP sold 4 million copies. A TV sales record!
Thank you so much for the beautiful music, and your fabulous voice!. you have given us so much happiness, when we listen to your singing!!, over the years! ladies and gentleman, this was the great slim whitman. may god bless you in heaven, our love to you always. Louie Vaccaro, tenor, las vegas.
The later TV albums were only the icing on the cake for Slim Whitman. He had a long, prolific, stellar career before that. He became a megastar in the rest of the English speaking world and was an inspiration for Harrison and McCartney, as well as Michael Jackson. He was the opening act for Elvis when he started in 1954. Basically, he introduced country music to England and after that nobody would be as big over there.
This is one of the greatest songs of all time. Disregardless of "genre"? The lyrics alone carry a heavy weight! Slim and the boys just NAIL it! Epic, one for the ages.
Slim Whitman was introduced to me in the early 60's by my Dad. To this day, everytime I hear that velvety voice with the distinct yodeling- I remember Dad and how Slim Whitman gave to me a memory to last a lifetime.
The reason Andy Kaufman looks like he was in a trance was because he truly was a fan of Slim's music. You can tell Andy liked what he liked and had a true appreciation for the likes of Slim even though he wasn't popular at the time. I like this clip alot.
I spent 3 months bedridden when I was very ill in total silence. At the end of those 3 months my inner state was holy. I saw this video while in that state on the kauffman special. It was 1 of the most incredible and amazing things I have ever seen. Now that I live in the world again and have become inwardly filthy, I don't think I would have looked twice at this. But seeing this video reminds me of that beautiful time and that beautiful state when I had gods peace.
R.I.P. saddens us in the town he lived in, Middleburg Fl, he lived 4 miles from me and his son went to the same High school, my mother was his sons bus driver, now he sings with the Angels and my Mama can hear him again, he was one of her favorite singers. Peace to his family also.
I remember when I was about 7 years old my dad brought me to an old country auction somewhere deep in the boonies in upstate New York and he bought a stack of old Slim Whitman records and he bought an old record player. My dad and I snuck in the back room of the auction barn to see if the rec player worked and this is the song that he played so the record player worked! I am 55 years old now and that was one of the things I remembered most in my childhood years. I love this song, thanks Pop!
You know a lot of people had fun with Slim Whitman, he had a lot of jokes made about him, especially when his TV album was selling like crazy, but when you boil it all down, the man was a really, really good singer. I always enjoy listening to him.
Slim Whitman had a voice like no other, Hes a great one among old folk western and country artists, and he made many a good songs, i still listen to myself, and hell im 21 years old, guys like this blow the hats off of the wana be country singers of modern years.
I first heard this song in a Rob zombie film when it first came out. Got hooked. I'm 30 years old today. And this song is the only song my 9 mo old daughter will fall asleep to. Mr Whitman thank you.
+aaron gall ???? Disagree? Watch his technique: Half the time he's no where near the microphone, nor singing into the direction of the microphone. People don't shed real tears for lip-synchs. Surely you're familiar with Kaufman's work. This sort of false emotion fits right in with his concept of comedy.
i first heard slim in 1977 i think i was about 10years old my dad bought the lp red river valley, I did not know what I heard , how he could sing never heard that before and since then never heard it from someone else.Slim got into the back of my mind and now I have some recordings of Slim and I enjoy every song I listen too , great
I'm thinking I Remember You is my personal favorite song by Slim. It gets inside your head for hours...it's so soothing and relaxing.....so beautiful for the spirit:)
Slim Whitman is unique! The greatest singer of all time! There will never be another voice as beautiful as his! Marje Morgan Wrexham North Wales UK. And a member of the SWAS on Facebook!
Neat to see this! I remember those old late-night commercials for his records, something about "he's sold more records than Elvis and the Beatles *combined*..!" But he was a big country & western act once upon a time -and was part of Elvis' pre-national fame road shows throught the south in 1954-55.. Thanks for the post. I miss this "high lonesome" sound of the old country music. Today's just doesn't have that.
Actually the ad said Slim spent more time with the #1 record than Elvis or the Beatles. Elvis used to open for Slim back before Elvis hit it big. he was a good singer.
wow ! this video is a powerful testament to the sheer power of the effect of astonishing talent has ,look at Andy Kaufmen! Not even trying to disguise is amazement , beautiful
The true genius is with the band behind the legend that is what makes them a legend. Awesome lyrics that highlight the artist qualities. The steel guitar highlights the guitars. No wonder the guy was awestruck he had no idea what its like to be a true Nashville artist.
Such awesome control, of an amazing voice, like poetry. I just came to listen & heard... Well Mr. Whitman had a good run, still it's sad to lose someone, especially with such talent.
"Slim Whitman" I remember you. This is a song I'll never forget it was always playing on the radio. away back when Mom was home. She loved his voice. Now I do.
I don't like country, but this song, it makes me cry. I first heard it in House of 1000 Corpses, and I just feel in love. I'm not a big fan of his songs, like the style, but his voice is magnificent! A talent you won't find anywhere else!
I saw Slim Whitman live in Bloomburg Tx in 1949. He had a tent show and came there 2 or 3 times.I was too young then to appreciate what a great singer he really was but have listened to him off and on ever since. There was a wrestling bear in his show. They had a syrup sopping contest and the winner got to wrestle the bear. he boy who won slapped at the bear and the bear slapped him hard. The handler came running and said you have to wrestle the bear not hit him LOL
Love this song! Was surprised to see Andy, I remember when he told everyone that he had cancer and they did not believe him. He died shortly after that, was in his 30's.
Im glad you think so, Slim Whitman, Hand Williams Sr, and Hank Locklin are some of my favorite old time singers, Espeically Slims version of home on the range, Hank locklins please help me im falling, and Hank Williams Im so lonesome i could cry, easily my favorites for these great musicians, i appreciate good music, its a shame artists now adays forgot what real music is supposed to sound like. at least we can still remember these legends.
i wish someone would clean this up. but even as it is , one cannot help but tear up over Andy's childlike joy at being this close to someone he has revered his whole life . If that wasn't enough , the words in the song, the camera angles , Slim's baby bear eyes ... there is no other scene that identifies the true nature of both these powerful entertainers as this very personal moment. It is as if they both could see into the future but didn't know how to reveal what they know in any other way than this song . watch @1:29 and then decide
I remember Slim from the 50's and admire a great yodelling C&W singer, was curious so googled his home and he lives in a not pretentious small acreage property called Woodpecker Paradise, truely a man you can respect.
I always loved this song - a hit by Frank Ifield in 1952 (?) - but Slim Whitman's version is even better. Stellar orchestral arrangement helps, but his voice soars into the stratosphere.
A great singer. Elvis, Michael Jackson and George Harrison were huge fans, as well as millions around the world. So sorry for his loss. This one hurts.
Heard this on country KBMR Country 1130 am.Oldies country classic weekend w/ Clarissa Lynn one weekend. Now cant get enuf., was from a 20-s -30-s musical.. After I play it and .i go to bed I hear it all night.. What a finely tuned watch or engine...........geno
This is absolutely beautiful. He put his own stamp on this tune in the same way Marvin Gaye did with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." I remember you, too, Slim!
good comparison. both singers OWN the songs they sang. btw, the ARRANGEMENT of Grapevine is one of the most amazing ever. I'm a musician and notice thses things, but most people don't realize that the arranger writes down each musician's instrctions. After that, the musicians can improvise, but the basic idea comes first. Is there a video without the lead vocal? If so, listen to how complex the arrangement is.
Andy looks star struck and rightfully so. When I think of Slim Whitman I think of this beautiful song. Just gorgeous .
Slim Whitman is one of the nicest gentlemen ever to grace the music industry. I have loved his music for decades. Only wish I could have seen him perform in person.
2 legends on stage. That’s what this is about.
The world lost a great voice but now he sings with angels. He was, in a word, magnificent.
Thank you so much for the beautiful music, and your fabulous voice!. you have given us so much happiness, when we listen to your singing!!, over the years! ladies and gentleman, this was the great slim whitman. may god bless you in heaven, our love to you always. Louie Vaccaro, tenor, las vegas.
i just found out slim is 89 and still going strong great news what a voice this man has
I love Andy Kaufman's reaction to Slim singing....he's mesmerized....He obviously knows and appreciates real talent!!!!
I read this comment over a decade ago and I haven't forgotten it. It made me appreciate both Andy and Slim. Thank you stranger.
This was possibly the only time we got a glimpse of the real Andy.
I think it is very sweet that Andy Kaufman was star-struck. it can happen to any of us when we see someone we have long admired.
This is one of the greatest songs of all time. Disregardless of "genre"? The lyrics alone carry a heavy weight! Slim and the boys just NAIL it! Epic, one for the ages.
SLIM PASSED TODAY @ AGE 90 RIP SLIM- YOUR MUSIC MADE A LOT OF PEOPLE HAPPY
Slim Whitman was introduced to me in the early 60's by my Dad. To this day, everytime I hear that velvety voice with the distinct yodeling- I remember Dad and how Slim Whitman gave to me a memory to last a lifetime.
Both Slim Whitman's voice and Andy Kaufman's reaction were amazing
Slim and Andy....great people! RIP guys!
Didn't know Andy had croaked????
Jacksonville is such a great place. The music history is incredible. According to local news,
Slim is still healthy and enjoying himself!
The reason Andy Kaufman looks like he was in a trance was because he truly was a fan of Slim's music. You can tell Andy liked what he liked and had a true appreciation for the likes of Slim even though he wasn't popular at the time. I like this clip alot.
how effortlessly the notes just come out of his throat...he is a pleasure to listen to...and to watch
Exactly.
The greatest singer of all time slim Whitman,
I always shed a tear or two when I hear the golden voice of my idol slim Whitman
Sleep in peace slim
RIP Slim. Frank Ifield introduced me indirectly to your magical music. Then was addicted.
One of the great voices of my youth. Love Slim.
Me too, there have been many cover version's of his songs but they were never as good. Think perhaps only oldies like me remember him .
R.I.P. saddens us in the town he lived in, Middleburg Fl, he lived 4 miles from me and his son went to the same High school, my mother was his sons bus driver, now he sings with the Angels and my Mama can hear him again, he was one of her favorite singers. Peace to his family also.

There's just no questioning the beauty of a voice like his.
Where have all the Slim Whitmans,Marty Robbins, Roy Orbisons etc. gone?
You know a lot of people had fun with Slim Whitman, he had a lot of jokes made about him, especially when his TV album was selling like crazy, but when you boil it all down, the man was a really, really good singer. I always enjoy listening to him.
Yes, indeed.
His T.V. album was second in sales to only The Beatles T.V. album so I would say 'Ol Slim had the last laugh.
What a magical voice. One for the ages!
There were a few jokes about him on WKRP in Cincinnati
this makes me weep as i watch slim making andy's dream come true. slim has eyes like a baby bear cub
Slim Whitman had a voice like no other, Hes a great one among old folk western and country artists, and he made many a good songs, i still listen to myself, and hell im 21 years old, guys like this blow the hats off of the wana be country singers of modern years.
Slim IS an alien. One of a kind. I could listen all day. They don't get any better. Most unique voice yet.
One of the prettiest voices I've ever heard. I love all his music. Thanks Slim.
Talk about amazing, I'm only 25 but I have a old soul all this "music" from today does not compare to these classics doesn't even come close
Such haunting music. His vocal range is amazing.
I first heard this song in a Rob zombie film when it first came out. Got hooked. I'm 30 years old today. And this song is the only song my 9 mo old daughter will fall asleep to. Mr Whitman thank you.
This a true love song! The emotions i feel listening to this song cannot be described. Andy seems to feel the same way.
Love that music, and my heart yearns for that innocent era.
I've been watching this almost once a month since it was posted. Man, Andy is almost crying.
+aaron gall , Ha-ha, that's sure is sumthin huh, Andy standing there like that.
Richard S Costello yuppers
+aaron gall Slim's lip-synching. Fair to assume Andy's faking it, too.
Im Yu ...humph
+aaron gall ???? Disagree? Watch his technique: Half the time he's no where near the microphone, nor singing into the direction of the microphone. People don't shed real tears for lip-synchs. Surely you're familiar with Kaufman's work. This sort of false emotion fits right in with his concept of comedy.
There will never be another Slim Whitman saw him twice at Liverpool Empire just as good live
Slim is a great guy and has a voice that out sings all the male country singers today hands down!
I love this song, and he sings it so effortlessly, fantastic
Oh Andy! The expression on his face as he watches his idol is priceless.
+hirdy6 Was he truly his idol, or is that just an act??
ChoctawNawtic Treated him with great respect and if it was an act I would've thought they'd have been a tag but with Andy, who would really know?
hirdy6 Exactly. Was this singer even ever very popular?
ChoctawNawtic Whitman? Charted with many songs and had at least one number 1. More popular outside his native US than he was in it.
You kidding? I think he was mega back in the day everywhere except the USA.
I could listen to his songs over and over again. Boy he was the greatest, what a voice, what a look. Miss him so much!
i first heard slim in 1977 i think i was about 10years old my dad bought the lp red river valley, I did not know what I heard , how he could sing never heard that before and since then never heard it from someone else.Slim got into the back of my mind and now I have some recordings of Slim and I enjoy every song I listen too , great
What a voice truly a great talent

A voice from above . When Slim sang the heavens stopped and listened!
I'm thinking I Remember You is my personal favorite song by Slim. It gets inside your head for hours...it's so soothing and relaxing.....so beautiful for the spirit:)
Yes, indeed.

Another fantastic performance by the legendary slim whitman
RIP Slim and Andy. Legends that I enjoyed while they were extant :)
I will always remember you. From your white boots, yodel style, with Andy Kaufman to boot - a celestial masterpiece.
Thank you for gracing this world with your presence, you will be missed.
I think this man had a very special guift from God and I loved to hear him sing.
I just finished a 200 firework salute and mortar finish in honor of slim whitman...
I remember you. R>i.P. you earned your right brother.
Takes me back to when I was a kid growing up, mydad used to play this and Jim Reeves a lot. Happy days.

What a voice. Mutual respect between two great talents, music and comedy
Love all Slim Whitman songs, loved his voice from the first time heard him in the early 50's when radio was king.
Hands up he may be miming, but it is the man himself and what a talent he is.Slim is still with us as far as i know
Love this song! Was surprised to see Andy, I remember when he told everyone that he had cancer and they did not believe him.
He died shortly after that, was in his 30's.
Remarkable, remarkable, majestic heavenly voice, and this was LIVE.Bravo Mr. Whitman, from a never fading fan in old Eire.

So very beautiful ~
Really enjoyed this live performance!
Yep Slim sings so naturally, I saw him in Worthing in 2007 even then at 79 he was better than anyone else I know. He is my one and only favourite.
RIP Walt.
Such an angelic voice...so beautiful

I saw this song at a very special time in my life after 3 months of intensive meditation. It was one of the most beautiful things id ever seen
Notice that even the irreverent Andy Kaufman stands in awe...
Yep....I don't think there will ever be another comedian in history that could pull of "schtick" better than Andy Kaufman.

@@FlamingoFizz andy was reportedly a HUGE FAN.
"irreverent"? He was a huge fan, as he was of Elvis: ruclips.net/video/ppttxQoc74Q/видео.html
Agreed.
I love that for once the host is genuinely pleased the star! brilliant
I always loved this song - a hit by Frank Ifield in 1952 (?) - but Slim Whitman's version is even better. Stellar orchestral arrangement helps, but his voice soars into the stratosphere.
I remember the year was 1962. My mom loved that song from Frank I.
A great singer. Elvis, Michael Jackson and George Harrison were huge fans, as well as millions around the world. So sorry for his loss. This one hurts.

brill singer my grandparents loved his music
Haven't heard this for a very long time. Reminds me of riding in the car with my father on the way to the ball game when there was only a.m. radio.
I Remember you Slim! and always will!
Very very very nice another last of the great ones! RIP SLIM!!
Slim whitman has a beautiful voice
Back when country music was real and not like today's fake and gay processed dumpster sludge that passes for "" country
Sweet! This particular performance has always been my favorite version of the song.
Hell yeah! It remind's me that particular scene!! Good singer.. 1000 corpses in deed
This is an amazing arrangement and performance on every level from one of the most underrated artists of all time. Brilliant rendition!
RIP Mr. Whitman. Thank you for the music!
RIP, Mr. Whitman. Thanks for your good, clean music and lifestyle. You are one of the greatest.
This is absolutely beautiful. He put his own stamp on this tune in the same way Marvin Gaye did with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine." I remember you, too, Slim!
