What y’all have failed to understand, realize, and unaware of is….
1: They were in big competition at the time with Boyz 2 Men. While technically, B2M had better harmonies and tone to their vocals, and power ballads that reached all races, they were considered mainstream pop and soft. Jodeci made music for the street ninjas that was talking about real spit that ninjas related to. They had the image, the icy jewelry, that tattoos, the high end fashion, and all that. They started the trend before all the rappers came out doing so.
2: There is singing, and then there is “SANGING”. While others sing, these boys SANG. We talking veins sticking out there necks, loud projecting if their voices so you can fully hear, shaking your souls type of SANGING.
3: Every group after them copied their style and pure talent. From 112 to Jagged Edge to Dru Hill and so on. The street, baggy pants, tatted up, icy jewelry, hard brash singing was all because of them.
4: DeVante Swing, the tallest member of the group with the deepest voice was also the producer, music arranger, and the most prolific song writer of the group. He changed the sound of R&B with hard hitting sounds and bass and snares and could play the piano and keys thoroughly. He birthed the basement crew which was a slew of young and upcoming artist/talent from future producers to rappers/singers/groups/songwriters, etc. To name a few monstrous names that came from under his guidance are Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Playa/Sataic, Sista (Missy Elliot’s all female R&B group before she went solo), Ginuwine, Tweet, and many more. He also made hits for most of the big names and record labels in the biz at that time…like Bad Boy (which they were discovered and signed by a young Puff Daddy under Uptown Records with Mary J. Blige, Father MC, and others), Death Row, and made hits for Tupac, The Dogg Pound, H-Town, Usher, and more.
Yea before all this the late 80s New Jack Swing sound was first like Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, Guy, Babyface, Levert, After 7 etc..
