    Depending what options you pick in QOS or any AI protection can disable most hardware acceleration Nat features and limit router speed to around 300mbs ish on this router
    I didn't realise you could drag them buttons at 3:30 (currant firmware update on merlin has removed all of the qos que disciplines)
    I find that adaptive qos is good enough to keep the data shared evenly among everybody and even when the connection is maxed out latency only goes up by 5 or 10ms when QOS is bandwidth limiting (due to maximum upload or download limit been reached)
    Setting priority on client isn't recommended as it means that one client can use all the bandwidth (simple QOS is best and doesn't usually disable as much of the routers hardware acceleration, CTF and FA)
    I moved onto a pc router now (untangle firewall) and that has near zero impact when QOS is enabled (changed the Asus router into access point mode)
    only issue I had with untangle was upnp not working but I think I fixed it by adding the local LAN+1024-65000 zone to allow "access control list" and now Nat is not showing strict any more (but need to do more testing as the issue only really shows up when both games are on)

    thank you for all these Asus videos, it's because of them i have set up an AiMesh with AC88u router and 2xAC68u nodes.
    but i have trouble with mobile provider's VoIP option - i have gigabit internet and the guy on the other side of a mobile call with VoIP enabled says is loosing me every few seconds.
    can i manage this with QoS or is it from some other parameters?

  • @robainsworth4384
    @robainsworth4384 4 года назад +1

    Thanks for the video. What adjustments would be made to QoS if I am running a VPN on one or more devices?
    Would the VPN hide the type of traffic so the router cannot make distictions to the traffic ?

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  4 года назад +1

      Thanks, the actual data would be hidden from the router, however the router would still know the protocol (TCP/UDP) and the port # that is used for that traffic, so depending on what VPN protocol you use (for example OpenVPN by default uses UDP 1194), you should be able to define some rules in the "traditional QoS" to prioritize your VPN traffic.

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  4 года назад +2

      You're welcome, glad it helped. That'll depend on your priorities, I personally would use the adaptive qos and would prioritize based on the most critical traffic to the least critical traffic. Thanks.

    so i set my highest prio to my PC which is working fine as i saw on speedtest.net
    but the other device i tested was suppose to be getting the lowest prio of 1Mb/s upload and download of any kind but when i tested on speedtest it still shows the Download speed is up to 24Mb/s and Upload to 1Mb/s which is kind of confusing as i'm certain i set the Download Bandwidth to 1Mb/s only?

  • @gmoneygmoney1018
    @gmoneygmoney1018 4 года назад +1

    Do you know how the Asus firmware manages the Device priority vs the service priority? The system allows both simultaneously and I'm not sure how they work together.

    • @Behfor
      @Behfor  4 года назад

      That's a good question, but unfortunately I don't know the answer! I can only guess that maybe the device priority is only focused on the bandwidth and is not a true QoS! The service priority on the other hand also takes into account other aspects of network such as latency, jitter, availability, packet loss and ets and it is a true QoS. I could be wrong though! Thanks.

    • @Behfor

      Well as far as I know Asuswrt-merlin supports SQM on the HND platforms and based on the merlin website it looks like the ac3100 is unfortunately using an older platform! I'm not sure about DD-WRT or any other firmware but those could be also worth checking out. Thanks.

    What is the QOS category for Streaming Financial data programs such as streaming stock charts and quotes? Web surfing, Media streaming or Work from Home?

    • @leexgx
      @leexgx 3 года назад

      If you know what the ip address is that it's connecting to you can look at the classification tab page (turn it on) and find the ip address as it tells you what everything is been categorises as on that page
      As long as you have set the qos correctly (say 25-50mbs below your actual download limit and upload 1-5mbs below your actual upload limit everything should get low latency posable)
      If you want lowest latency use a pc router (like untangle)

      Hi, You can see the web history as explained in the video but I don't think you can see the search history in your router because it's usually encrypted! However you should be able to see your Google search history through your google account, if that's what you are looking for.

    does anyone know what are the max performance of the QoS of this router? im lookin at an edgerouter X and that can do up to 100Mbps on QoS and since my ISP connection does 200 Mbps im not gonna sacrifice 100Mbps for QoS. if this router does 150-200 or more then that would be great lol

    • @leexgx
      @leexgx 3 года назад

      I got the 66 B1 witch is lower spec then the 68 and it handles my 400/35 connection fine with adaptive qos used I picked custom and sorted my priority manually,
      I haven't enabled any thing els on the router (like the AI protection stuff as its known to disable more parts of the hardware Nat features
      I have it set to 350/30 (402/35 is actual docsis profile been sold to me) only see at best 10ms of latency I increase when using them limits, on my untangle pc based firewall (witch I recantly testing) i don't get any latency increase any more (currently using a 4th gen quad core full atx pc witch is overkill, getting a cheap dual port i3-3217U mini pc soon its half the speed single core speed+half the core count but its absolutely silent and small but should be fine as my bigger pc is idle most of them time even when maxed out connection)
      Don't set download limiter extremely close to your download limit, as QOS limiting has a delay before it can cap it and will overshoot a bit when a large fast download happens unless you set a buffer of about 50mbs (as the data is sent from outside your control so takes a brief moment where your connection may actually be maxed out for a fraction of a second before the qos throttles it) if you don't mind a slight high ping for under a second of any fast downloads set it to 20-10mbs below your real limit
      upload on the other hand is completely handled by the router and is rate limited before its sent to the Internet (so you can get away with it been just 200kbs below your a actual limit but if you have plenty of upload I recommend 1-5mb below actual limit)
      If using cable (docsis tech) when I get close to 35mbs my latency starts to go up a lot more so I have mine set 5mbs lower then my connection
      adsl, vdsl or real Fibre doesn't have this issue so 1mb under your upload limit should be good enough, but with adsl or vdsl you need to make sure the connection upload and download is consistent because if the qos is set higher then your reconnected speed it won't work correctly

    Qos disables hardware acceleration off. So Qos is a POS. Without hardware acceleration i get 300mbps on my gigabit speeds with no one else connected and im through ethernet. With Qos off which allows hardware acceleration to be enabled. I get 950mbps. So screw Qos
