Imagine surviving the great war, being friends with a person who turned into an evil mutant warlord who created all of the mutants in the west coast, crossing the continental United States, being rooted to the ground and worshipped as a god and creating the first living trees in 200 years all to have some 18 year old kid come burn you alive because they're too lazy to give you a proper death.
In addition to what John Jackson said, Harold used to be a man and free to walk. Until the tree on him started growing and it rooted to the ground, matting him to it.
That burned-out husk of Harold is one of the most harrowing things I’ve seen in Fallout 3; I could never do him dirty like that, he’s been one of my favourite characters since the first game
I really like Harold's voice actor. He puts a lot more character into his… character. He still reads the script, but he repeats things for emphasis and laughs like a crazy old guy that likes to mess around.
There better than super mutants, raiders, enclave and talon company lol, I actually like oasis it's peaceful and beautiful and so green so much better than the rest of the Capitol wasteland so ugly and rottening to be around and depression 😥, oasis is a blessing of a miracle of life
If Harold's growth is accelerated, and the canon ending is the BoS turning the wasteland into an ordenstaat, the BoS have an incredible advantage. While Arroyo and Vault City were made with a GECK and their effects are limited, Osais will keep growing further and further out. The BoS may even end up having more resources than NCR after a couple of decades.
Harold is one of the saddest creatures in the fallout universe because he got some of the FEV spilled on him turning into a ghoul, all his skin fell off, a tree started growing out of his head, his best friend became the Master. Harold wandered from the west coast, all across the Midwestern wasteland until Bob took over his body and planted him in the Capital Wasteland, where he stayed in the same spot for 20 years. Harold is over 200 years old he's stuck as a tree and he's in so much pain because his organs are moved around from Bob, it's possible that Bob is a figment of Harold's imagination and slowly but surely Harols is succumbing to the insanity and psychosis of a feral ghoul. If Harold is kept alive there's a slight chance he hold on to the last shred of humanity because of the tree minders despite the fact that they're a cult that worship him as a god. What is more likely is that Harold will become a feral ghoul trapped in the same place within the tree and just start snarling and screaming at the tree minders for the rest of his days not being able to talk until someone kills his heart out of mercy. That is why I kill Harold, not because he's sad and in pain, it's because asking to be killed it one of the last things he can ask of his own free will and the Lone Wanderer should kill him out of compassion. Also killing Harold give the tree mutation to you as well making you have skin as hard tree bark which lets you carry on Harold's spirit.
@@Paceee He isn't a ghoul. He was changed into what he is now due to FEV. FEV doesn't always turn you into a supermutant. But seriously, how the hell did Harold travel from Gecko to D.C. in 20 years after the end of Fallout 2? And more importantly, why?
Ghouls and FEV have nothing to do with each other. Ghouls are humans who have been irradiated to shit (and there's no clear answer as to why some people turn into ghouls and others just die) and their skin starts falling off. The FEV creates mutations, hence that one dude turning into the Master, the Super Mutants, and Harold with his tree. Harold isn't a ghoul, he's just been mutated by the FEV.
So um I wanna kill him because he’s sick and also he might be lowering sanity like maybe because he got mutated but only by a little bit so I’m thinking that he might slowly become a super mutant which is why his hearts so big because he’s becoming a super mutant so I will decide to kill him if I get the game because he’s losing his sanity he’s losing his self and his soul he’s becoming just a pure super mutant that’s trapped in a tree and also he could just rip away the tree and kill all the tree minders So I wanted to save the tree minders save the tree and save Harold by killing him
Harold suffers but the world needs Bob to heal the wasteland, the treeminders are lunatics who drive Harold insane, so is a riddle , in one hand you have Harold (a human who wants to die), on the other hand you have Bob who litterally heals the wasteland, so how can we find a middle ground?, i think if we kill the treeminders and place a radio next to Harold he would not complaint about spend the next decade listening to three-dog, in my personal opinion i would infect tree father birch with harolds mutation so he can take his place and allow Harold to die, everyone wins
So... it's the Boredom that Harold hates the most, yet he can "see" through the leaves of Bob's progeny. Seems that the solution is easy. Use the lineament and spread Bob throughout the wastes. Harold won't be bored again. He'll be watching the going's on of all the "slow minded" citizen's :D

I also think he should think about the little girl who spends a lot of time with him, he likes her presence, she gives him something to think about, reasons to reminisce, it would be a real shame to take Harold from her, in fact she's the only one among the Treeminders that has any sense, besides I don't really believe in helping someone kill themselves, if he were meant to die, he would but clearly he's becoming something more. I also think Harold has the sense and care to keep the Treeminders a peaceful culture.

I've ruined way more people's lives trying to bring fresh drinking water to the capital wasteland so yeah one life for the return of strong plant life is not an issue
The best utilitarian option would be to apply the liniment, to spread the growth of trees over the wasteland. While the Oasis might get raided when it becomes apparent to everyone that trees are growing from everywhere, it still gives everyone years to prepare for such an action. And as a gain, plant life will cover the wasteland, growing a sustainable eco-system for everyone, which will be able to sustain agriculture and habitats for wildlife. While Harold is going to potentially suffer, the man just needs company who will help him not be bored. Just having people come by and reading him books once a day would help with that. And, since you're the Lone Wanderer, you are cleaning out the Slavers, the Raiders, the Enclave, the Super Mutants, and any other potential faction that could harm Oasis, and so the Treefather's worries are for nought. It's why, if I'm playing a good character, I chose the liniment.
Yeah. It makes the most sense to me. You - as the Lone Wanderer - have a lot of agency how the Wasteland looks like. So stopping raiders mutants and other ne'er-do-goods you lay out the perfect scenario to spread Harold, which in the long run is the best for the Wasteland.
Also, since harold said that he can "see" through the trees and he wants to die because of his boredom, spreading the oasis would allow him to see other parts of the world eventually so his suffering would only be temporary
This shows you are a better person than most of us, as you never burned Harold to an ashen husk frozen in agony.... Or, you just listen to Enclave Radio - you monster :D
Yew is 100% why I don’t kill Harold. He is possibly her only friend when considering the other treeminders are crazy adult cultists. She would miss him dearly and when you discuss Yew with him you are able to change his mind. I like to think that she grows older while Bob spreads throughout the wastes. Eventually Harold is either completely consumed by Bob or one day Yew ends his suffering herself. Maybe even with the Wanderer there to see him off. *sniff*
I wish there was an option to at least put a radio next to him, and the lone wounderer could influence oasis by either having 3dog or enclave radio on. At least then he would have the little girl and radio to keep him entertained.
I could see Harold becoming a popular destination in the future. People would visit from all over to see the creature that brought color back to the Wasteland. He would never be bored again.
I do love your voice so much. It's so calming to watch during the evenings, it helps to get sleepy and calm. And I can also see all the things I did not do back then in Fallout 3 now that I do not have it anymore. For example the decision you made in this video was a thing I never dared doing at all, now I finally know what would have happend. Thank you for exploring all those games so deeply. You make great videos and the effort you put into them is obviously. You can be proud of your content as it is a series I, like many others, will follow with out most interest.
This story is so cool but so sad. Poor Harold :( Now to wait for pt 3. I love how your voice changes as you go through stories Ox it's like youre really in the story too.
I'm not sure you know about this but forest have a form of communication and feelings... Trees can use the underground networks made by mushrooms to tell other trees about danger, sickness, or it's malnourished so other trees could intervene and save the tree... I forgot what the process is called... Try looking for trees communicating...
Apart from the red forest. When the radiation gets too extreme even trees die. It's living cells after all.

Radiation still damages wildlife and plant life it's just when you remove human civilization from an area wildlife is able to move in and take over So basically humans are worse for the environment then radiation
Poor Harold as much as I wouldn’t wanna kill him if I couldn’t convince him to live I’d do what he wants it’s his life after all and let’s be real no matter how good your character is they’ve killed for less

I wonder if Harold has been releasing seed barring plants throughout his migrating from the west coast to the east? If so, there could be more tree worshipping hippies out there in the midwest.
I was hoping Harold would show up in fallout 4. Like if the treeminders uprooted him and relocated him somewhere in the commonwealth. Would have kept up the trend of having him in every fallout game. Oh well, guess things like that don’t have to be a thing.
Good morning OX been watching your videos for a few months ago and let me just say I'm a huge fan really enjoy all your videos. We have the exact same taste in games and I love your commentary thank you for all the great videos always looking forward to new content.

If he only ever does Fallout videos and say that popularity with Fallout dies off or at the very least views and numbers go down on his channel, he's painted himself into a revenue corner. Have you ever heard the expression to diversify your portfolio? I think it is good when channels that start as one thing, eventually spread out to other things. It also helps subscriber fatigue syndrome.
This is the best quest in Fallout 3, and one of the best across all games. Talking to Sapling Yew broke my heart when I found out her and Harold were close.
I feel like this is partly a tribute to the Legend of Zelda's Great Deku Tree, from the Ocarina of Time. Both have a talking tree that you gotta go inside of.
It's probably way too late to talk about this, but I actually didn't mind the Gauss Rifle. In terms of sound, it reminded me of Ada, that precious custom-built robot. That satisfying "uhn!" when it fires always made me think of her taking damage, hell sounds like it too. Guess that precious bot is in all the tech we use, no matter what region of the US.
My guess is that the seeds and "Bob" are infected with FEV the same that oddly mutated Harold making it grow in such a way we can see thus in the huntersville green house project giving it fast growing properties
So Poplar spent around a decade looking for oasis, has been there for 15 years, but Harold only took root there 20 years ago? Is there something I'm not getting here?
Harold’s burnt corpse, after the fire is so haunting such a awful way to die, as you can see his pain frozen in the remains of his tree corpse. Wonder what outcome is the official one, think it would be to let him live as the they could have him in a future game.
I always wondered if they realize they could hide better if there was more green. As it is they stick out in the wasteland like a sore thumb if they let it spread all over than a little green in a sea of green is less conspicuous.
Yes. Though I imagine that the intermediate stage, where the green is just starting to spread out and becoming easily visible to the wasteland from outside the valley might be the most dangerous time. They probably should collect Bob's seeds and do a bit of manual dispersion, so the green shows up some distance out before any direct green path to their valley becomes obvious.
I have to wonder about all the branches that seem to be growing out of the Treeminders. Could they also be mutating like Harold because of his unique FEV? Maybe when they Die they will also become Super Mutant Trees like Harold.
This may sound out there but with a 10 year time jump between fallout 3 and fallout 4. What if cypress from fallout 3 is one of the gunners leaders that get mentioned in nuka world expansion for fallout 4. Poor Harold. Most of his cult just doesn't talk to him like a person. Being in his situation, I'd beg for death too or at least a good friend. Secondly why the hell would three dog call you out like that? Just because you went in there doesn't mean anything. If you were an evil character, okay but if you're good he still does it. How does he even know you went in there? Does he have someone following you?

You - as the Lone Wanderer - have a lot of agency how the Wasteland looks like. So stopping raiders mutants and other ne'er-do-goods you lay out the perfect scenario to spread Harold, which in the long run is the best for the Wasteland.
Also, since harold said that he can "see" through the trees and he wants to die because of his boredom, spreading the oasis would allow him to see other parts of the world eventually so his suffering would only be temporary
Poor Harold surprised he hasn't gone insane with these tree minders.
When he said "run for the hills" I realised Harold looks like Ed
Yo the song poped in my head but i never noticed it before
Fear of the dark artwork man
This games like 10 years old and this is my first time hearing three dogs report on the fire. Thanks oxhorn
This shows you are a better person than most of us, as you never burned Harold to an ashen husk frozen in agony....
Or, you just listen to Enclave Radio - you monster :D
Ive burned, killed, slowed and sped up Harlod but never saw the husk nor hear the report
Oh! Idea maybe for a shirt design? A Giving Tree like setting, with Harold and Bob talking to Sapling Yew?
"I'm a good character, so I would never do that" proceeds to torch the innocents
I bet, he saw the irony of this statement.
I wonder what happens if you kill all the tree minders and talk to Harold?
You gotta let him spread. He's a smart tree, he would eventually come around.
Oxhorn i swear if when you get to liberty prime and you don't use the theme of team America world police we riot
I'm with you, fellow patriot!
I was today years old when I found out harold and nick valentine have the same voice actor
Burning him is the worst thing you could do in the game? It's worse than blowing up Megaton?
This story is so cool but so sad. Poor Harold :( Now to wait for pt 3. I love how your voice changes as you go through stories Ox it's like youre really in the story too.
Beginner Fallout 3 players: "Blowing up Megaton must be the most evil thing you can do in this game."
Veteran Fallout 3 players: "..."
"I suggest we speak to the outsider"
Turns and stares at you
"AGREED!" O.O
I'm not sure you know about this but forest have a form of communication and feelings... Trees can use the underground networks made by mushrooms to tell other trees about danger, sickness, or it's malnourished so other trees could intervene and save the tree... I forgot what the process is called... Try looking for trees communicating...
Killing Harold with fire feels like the equivalent of killing Paarthunax in Skyrim
This gets me thinking about doing some kind of Treeminder character build in Fallout 4.
Just look at Chernobyl if you’re confused about radiation, plant and animal life is pretty much unchanged
Apart from the red forest. When the radiation gets too extreme even trees die. It's living cells after all.
Radiation still damages wildlife and plant life it's just when you remove human civilization from an area wildlife is able to move in and take over
So basically humans are worse for the environment then radiation
Jesus Harold looks scary when he's burned
Poor Harold as much as I wouldn’t wanna kill him if I couldn’t convince him to live I’d do what he wants it’s his life after all and let’s be real no matter how good your character is they’ve killed for less
Tree gang!!!!

Lol while the players just sitting listening to the convo at the beginning it looks like they havent noticed him but father birch knew lmao
"we are at an impasse, I suggest we speak to the outsider"
*father birch looks straight at you with squinty eyes*
"AGREED.."
the hidden cappy quest in nuka world reminds me a lot of this story. (quest story spoilers ahead)
you stumble upon a man whose been confined to the same spot for years, and are given the choice to put him out of his misery, or leave him to talk to that one nuka cola obsessed chick whose name blanks on me
Sierra Petrovavich
What mods did Oxhorn use for this? My game never looked this good when I played it.
That left me rooted to my chair. Thanks Oxhorn.
Oxhorn if you see this. Your videos get me through my long hours at work. Thank you. Please never leave us lol
Learn the truth about Oxhorn & you will know the real Oxhorn.
I wonder if Harold has been releasing seed barring plants throughout his migrating from the west coast to the east? If so, there could be more tree worshipping hippies out there in the midwest.
I enjoyed this piece of Lore. It is a part of the 'side story' development of this game.
I was hoping Harold would show up in fallout 4. Like if the treeminders uprooted him and relocated him somewhere in the commonwealth. Would have kept up the trend of having him in every fallout game. Oh well, guess things like that don’t have to be a thing.
He wasn't in New Vegas either, so the trend was broken with Obsidian.
I burnt Harold by mistake. He asked me to kill him and I was like why wouldn’t this game just let me burn em, pulled out my flamer and yeah smh.
Good morning OX been watching your videos for a few months ago and let me just say I'm a huge fan really enjoy all your videos. We have the exact same taste in games and I love your commentary thank you for all the great videos always looking forward to new content.
i loved oasis
I’m hooked on your La Noire series can’t wait for the next episode
I never played la noire but after i did i may start watching his streams
I can wait it bothers me when he uploads videos about that game we come here for fallout and i thi nk he should create a new channel for other games
Gerard Cowan Well he probably has over like 600 fallout videos so you can’t blame him for trying something new and plus most people would also probably want to see something new
Yeah, I like his L.A Noire vids, good side content on par with his other streams
@@dumdumdumbest834 I understand your point but consider the age old addage; "Never put all your eggs in one basket." If he only ever does Fallout videos and say that popularity with Fallout dies off or at the very least views and numbers go down on his channel, he's painted himself into a revenue corner.
Something you taught me is patience because sometimes the npc’s have a very large dialogue tree
pun intended
I'm a Brotherhood of Steel outcast (BoSo).
Harold sounds like a cool guy
0:25 ok guys I got this *lights match* Edit: 13:16 *Match lighting intensifies* 😈😈😈
Pls don’t stop ox your the best youtuber ever
I feel like this is partly a tribute to the Legend of Zelda's Great Deku Tree, from the Ocarina of Time. Both have a talking tree that you gotta go inside of.
4:13 Really missed a trick not saying "he can't see the wood for the trees!"
I love how the argument between Laurel and Birch, mirrors the conflict between Trotsky and Stalin, respectively.
Haha lmao
burning harold to a crips while singing "How bad can I be ?" Just feels so right in all the wrong ways.
I think Leaf Mother Yanny's idea is better.
Aayyyyeeeee
I always wondered if they realize they could hide better if there was more green. As it is they stick out in the wasteland like a sore thumb if they let it spread all over than a little green in a sea of green is less conspicuous.
Yes. Though I imagine that the intermediate stage, where the green is just starting to spread out and becoming easily visible to the wasteland from outside the valley might be the most dangerous time. They probably should collect Bob's seeds and do a bit of manual dispersion, so the green shows up some distance out before any direct green path to their valley becomes obvious.
Huh. I did this quest dozens of times, I always knew about his fear of Fire, but it never occurred to me to try burning him.
My God is the Sun.
Godless heathens, always want from the sky
33:38 I feel like singing Ring of Fire By Johnny Cash
Anyone notice how that girl was the same one in slavery?
Oh yeah yeah
fervin Lopez oh yeah yeah
fervin Lopez we must attack everyone
We will take over youtube
If I was in Harold's predicament, the first thing I would ask someone to do is give me a bark-free handy.
I have to wonder about all the branches that seem to be growing out of the Treeminders. Could they also be mutating like Harold because of his unique FEV? Maybe when they Die they will also become Super Mutant Trees like Harold.
silentpaw they just put sticks in their clothes
YUP. Over a decade later and Harold's scream still messes with me. Never heard Three-Dog's news report about the burning though. That was fun
Thank you for this series. Like all your other Fallout 3 and N.V. content, I enjoy multiple viewings. :D
It’s so sad about how she talked about curling up with Harold a telling her fear😢
This may sound out there but with a 10 year time jump between fallout 3 and fallout 4. What if cypress from fallout 3 is one of the gunners leaders that get mentioned in nuka world expansion for fallout 4. Just a theory is all as we have seen other fallout characters pop up in othere games like mccreedy
I burned Harold once as part of a completionist evil run. Took me off guard, how disturbing it was. Ended up reloading.
I'll be honest, I thought Harold was a Hist tree
This was one of my favorite quests!
I guess you could say the Treeminders have very Flowery Names... I'll show myself out now.
Harold’s story is very sad. I wish we could’ve seen him in Fallout 4 if he Wasn’t. ROOTED. *INTO.* T H E. *G R O U N D!*
PS for anyone playing along with Oxhorn in this portion. Here’s a little spoiler. There’s tons of Mirelurks and Mirelurk kings in the caves
It was gruesome burning harold to death
