So there’s recently been other content creators out there try to say that you should NOT waste your time on “smalls” while STARTING your business and that they would rather build a $10,000 item instead of several smalls…well… so would I. But We don’t have the luxury of the machinery needed for this or the customer base. YET. Build your smalls alongside your larger items. Fluid income is a necessity for growth!

Just recently decided to start my own business because of this series, it's going decent so far. Can't quit my job but had two custom orders in the first day and picked up $250 profit in 8 hours. So thank you for making this series and making it seem like a doable thing to be your own boss!
I'm no woodworker. I'm a novice soap maker who's yet to perfect her recipe. Watching this series, I've realized how much time, money, and product I'm wasting making 3lb loaves at a time when they're not totally up to snuff. I make sales, but I'd make more if I perfected my recipe and techniques through creating small batches more often. Very educational and inspiring series. Thank you!
I once read about an art show where most of the artists were presenting paintings priced at 2-3 thousand dollars. At the end of the weekend show, most were carping and griping about what a miserable show it had been sales-wise. Except for one fellow. His philosophy was that almost everyone had at least $35 of discretionary money in their pocket, so he priced nearly everything he had at $35 or less. He sold almost everything brought and made more money than the other artists would have made selling just one of their paintings. Small works!
This guy makes me want to quit my job and invested myself spend some time making things oh, this is a great series I enjoy it tremendously, keep up the good work
Your videos are both helpful and inspiring. These are two very separate qualities that don't usually appear together in most videos, and I really appreciate it. Thank you!

You have definitely given me and my wife a boost. She sews, I do metal work. Woodworking is something we can do together. Combine all 3 and I think we got a business. We do craft shows right now, and you’re right, smalls sell. We’ll have a few large dollar items, but people gravitate to the small ,cheaper items.
Man!! Thank you for making your videos, I’m from a very small town in Iowa so all of your information is going to definitely help me begin this journey! Thank you you are appreciated round here my man.
Another GREAT video! ! ! Thank you SO MUCH - Because of your videos I have made MUCH more money with FAR LESS headaches and out of pocket cost with smalls than I ever did with big items, (Tables, Coffee Tables, Hall Trees etc. I've almost completely stopped doing that work). We recently tore down and replaced our backyard cedar fence, instead of letting them just haul it away, I kept the best pieces and now have a supply of beautiful naturally weathered boards. I've been using that to make signs, frames, trays, etc. Look for materials in places wherever you can that might not be obvious. Maybe a neighbor is tearing something down and you can re-mill the lumber into something usable. Most of all, Keep It Simple. People really like simple, rustic items and they are willing to pay for them. One thing I had to learn was, don't be afraid to charge for your time and talent. Don't sell yourself and your art short. Thanks again Matt for helping us all, keep up the great work ! ! !
I’ve really loved this series Matthew. Being someone who only has a few hours a week of shop time, I always love projects that I can start and list within the same day. I’m working on some planters right now and will be doing some wall art stuff as well. Take care brother!
Thanks! Yea thats why I decided to do the series. I had the same issue starting out. It's hard to get your name out there with large items if you don't have a fluid revenue stream in the meantime.
Hi Matt I agree with you, I would love to build a 10,000 dollar table but I don't have the room or the fancy equipment. That's why I like your program for the idea's and inspiration to do smalls. Thank you
Hi Matthew, the "Smalls" videos started making their way to my recommended and I knew immediately I needed to subscribe. Me and my wife are self employed and make all our money from small, easy, and cheap things to make. I have a great variety of tools in our workshop but I'm no master woodworker. Your big pieces are absolutely amazing works of art BTW. I'd love to see you do a video about all of your favorite finish products. I feel like even with smalls the right finish can change the value and quality so much. My wife has been doing the distressed look already for some time, but there are so many products i haven't tried in terms of getting the best natural or protective finishes. Much love man, me and my wife have both been enjoying your videos.
I really like your approach using strips of wood. I am remodeling a house built in 1902 and have more lath boards than I know what to do with. Lath boards out of an old house remodel are always rough cut and usually 1.5" x 0.25" but have variation to make the "rustic" look. I think the best part is that they are free! Thanks and keep up the good work.
A friend of mine today posted they had about 100 balusters from an old deck they were replacing. They had that gray ashy look to them and a lot of character so I grabbed them up as well as a few other pieces. Planning on making a few flags with the baluster.
Smalls are where it’s at. I can speak from experience. Good information brother. And I never knew about tobacco sticks. I’m gonna have to try to source some of those!
Thanks brother! Some of our fellow content creators are saying smalls are a waste of time and have no profit margin 😂. That there's more money in making $10,000 furniture. Must be nice. Tobacco sticks are very similar to drying sticks in the lumber industry. May be a lil easier to find.
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking yeah man I had a conversation one time with a restaurant tour here who owned two really high-end restaurants. He decided to get into the smash burger game. Selling a ton of burgers to a lot of people at a cheap price ended up being so much more lucrative than his $150 a head fancy restaurant model. Smiles for life
I have pieces that look like them from making thin slices off of sides of scrap 2x4s (i was making dollhouse siding). They are still strong but slightly flexible for that light weaving in the example.

Hey Aaron - I've seen some decorative metal work in catalogs that look to be the small metal (looks almost like 16 gauge electric fence wire) curled into spirals and stuck in the ground in sets of three. People buy that stuff. Or the metal spiral stakes that would be a great companion to the trellis or obelisk Matt has on another video.
I just stumbled onto this series. In the 80s my stepdad made wood cutouts of ducks and geese for decor. It got us through a very lean time after he lost a job. It surprised us all what hot sellers they were at the flea market.
Thanks for the reply. I'm crawling at this stage, but not stopping. You, Jordan Peterson and another artist kicked me in the right direction. For that I will always be grateful and happy to call you friend.
Thanks Mathew for these videos. I’m recently retired and have been looking for a supplemental income. This is perfect. I’m also a photographer so I’ve got both areas covered. It is truly unbelievable to me what people will pay for some of these projects. My wife said it best…if I can’t or don’t have the time or ability you have to find someone who has both to get these items. Thanks again your are doing an awesome thing with these videos.
Mr. Peech, you are a forward thinking person. Also, you make it sound easy. And we all know that the less experienced woodworker will cautiously go for the easier job. As it should be. That is how we begin. Keep up the good vids
When it comes to coat hooks you could always purchase cheap spoons, flatten the spoon part, drill a small hole or two, curve the handle portion and perhaps even spray paint. Just a thought on saving some money.
Thank you Mathew , I took your Charcuterie Idea & cut them in the form of “California” (18” length California Redwood )where I live & sold them . I bought rubber stamps Star / heart / palm tree & stamped the city ppl lived in . Everyone loved them. I got orders from fam & friends that live outta California & want there state charcuterie board lol. Next up is coasters & 4x4 candle 🕯. Thank you , I just like working with wood smalls . I used to make cornhole boards .
My boys and a friend have made 45-50 of those cross wall art pieces and sold them as as fundraiser for national bible quizzing in Ohio. They needed to raise over $400 each and your video gave us the idea and they've loved making them. 3 teen boys in the shop has tested my patience sometimes too. From my 12, almost 13 year old, I learned that kids are like farts. You are disgusted my others'but you're proud of your own. #ShopTalk
😂... Thats awsome! And so awesome that the kiddos are in the shop. That is real life skills and memories. Yea it's a bit nerve grinding at first... but give it a bit. My boys now all make side money doing builds and started with projects like the cross. The only high school kids that I know of that always have cash and never ask me for anything except to learn something new. Keep it up!

Live in toledo, would really enjoy meeting with you, learning as much as I can. You have been a huge inspiration for doing more and learning everything I can about woodworking. Thank you Matthew, don't stop making videos, you're ideas have made me wana build as much as I can and as often as I can. You gave me new hope after having to close my construction company. Thank you for showing me other ways I can still build and make money
I really love your video woodworking money making series. I am looking to start my own business and have fun doing it. Please keep on posting your videos.
Pallet wood I’ve made some great tables out of pallet wood most of the time it’s free on the side of the road also dumpster diving You would be amazed at some of the great wood you can find in dumpsters behind certain businesses
That small cabinet above your left shoulder that looks like its cracked down the middle is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. If he sells these and anyone could point me in the right direction, please do so.
It sounds bad but watching these videos has given me the idea to make cross/religion items in my area seeing as my town and the neighboring town are very religion heavy. Profit$
Things that have patterns, using squares and triangles - like a quilt- are “delicious to the eye” - they will sell. I’m a quilter so I have experience with this.
As always, this vid is full of useful info. Even the little things like making the price tag easy to remove so your contact information stays attached. Great tip! Thorough as usual, Matthew. God bless!
Dude! I absolutely love your videos (especially the ones like this), I only have a small space (6’x3’) to work in and have managed to fit in a table saw, band saw, planer & miter saw. But that’s all I can as it leaves me 1’x4’ to move around in (luckily I’m super thin lol), however big items are a no go and medium items (table and chair for my 2 yo son) have to be assembled and finished in my house. Doing small, cheap items is the way to go for me until I can save enough money to rent a unit to work from. 🤙
Matthew, thank you for your great instructional videos. I have looked at your plans and they are attractive and well-detailed. I admire your can-do approach, which I see as getting folks beyond self-defeating thoughts to action, taking that first step. I like that you talk about your prototypes and that it took several tries to get to what you present as your product. The lessons are there - take the first step, then keep the faith and take a few more. Folks are hurting so, so bad, mentally and financially. That first small success, which is what you open the door to, is the base for recovery and hope. Regarding the smalls, I believe you are on exactly the right track. I don’t think anything makes people happier than finding something original, handmade and beautiful at price they can pay. There are many more people of modest means in this world than rich people who can afford the $10K stuff. A beautiful little piece that can become part of a Christmas ornament tradition or be integrated into serving guests is a wonderful thing, and if it sells for $20, even better. Anyway, count me as an admirer, and I wish you a million subscribers.
Dude once again thank you so much for the video. People need to know about u like seriously. Been doing allot looking about at different things recently to start the smalls projects aswell as few big ones. Just bought myself a proper table saw and getting plainer jointer combo next month investing what a got the now to get different things up and going so for that wanna say thank u you've given me the push to do this. Big love brother!🏴👍

Thank you so much, Matthew, for making these videos. I am someone starting out and have a million ideas, but you helped me narrow down what I want to start with. Keep on doing what you are doing.
I hate your channel. I always get so fired up-I’m gonna make this and do that-and then I remember I don’t want a second job 😂 You give me such great gift and project ideas. I truly appreciate how willing you are to share your success. Keep up the great work, brother!
I tried to build a business and found I was super stressed all the time. My shop is my sanctuary so now I just do what I want when I want. But I’m thrilled it’s working so well for you.
WOW! I do not only have the tools, but also SO many of the (mostly reclaimed) materials seen in this video, just laying around, collected from all kinds of places, knowing I would use them "one day", but in most cases I had NO idea for what! Until now! I've had to resist MANY attempts from friends to "get rid of all that junk. We'll help you!". But I live alone, it's all MY junk, and soon MY fun making things and perhaps even earning a few kroner selling 1 or 2 projects... ( ....and if I can't resist; perhaps even a "who laughs last") Once you get the first inspiration, you realize YOU can do it, and you start working, many more ideas will come. And there is no going back. Just forwards, making some mistakes, learning from them, and forwards you go, with a smile on your face. It's not about what you don't have, but how you use what you have, and move forwards. This is by far the channel I've got the most amazing and "ready to use" ideas from, and many of the simple, rustic ones will sell here in Denmark too. Thank you, thank you SO much, Matthew! And ALL of you making this channel grow! 🥰 From a 60 year old newbie woodworker from Denmark with a big smile on her face
Hey Matthew! I've been watching your videos on a binge. I just found your channel last week, and I have learned a lot! I plan on starting my woodworking business in the very near future! My husband and I are buying a new home soon, so I'm waiting until after we move. I will have a space I can actually work in! I think it will be a great way to help pay off our new mortgage along with other things we will be doing. My new woodworking business is entirely your fault 😆. Looking forward to a new adventure! Tyfs and keep up the good work!
Hey Matthew. I have a smalls idea. At the pawn shop there will be a bin of box wrenches. Use your vice and torch to turn them into coat hooks for an entry shelf.
Awesome content, I’m finishing a major build for my home now. Going to start producing smalls for end of summer sale and get on a cycle to build a business. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise
I’ve wanted to do some wood working. I don’t have the space to do anything but you give me hope that I could probably be able to make a couple items come fall to earn a few extra dollars. Doesn’t have to be some elaborate setup and business. With social media it’s so easy to get the word out there. I appreciate the great feedback

Man Matthew, can hardly keep up with all these ideas plus the ones I've been collecting. Working a full time job I'm still behind on making things, but I intend to gear up as I'm headed toward the end of that career. You are a genius both on marketing and creativity. I look forward to all your stuff, because it all works.
We dont have Pottery Barn in the UK, but we have IKEA which I think is the same sort of store. They have their Marketplace that sell coasters, and baskets and wall art etc. I have seen people at the tills with mountains of this stuff especially on the run up to Christmas. I am definitely going to be making a few simple things to sell at local craft fairs this summer.
Thank you, my good, sir! Gave me plenty of ideas, actually the wife, but we all know how that goes! Looking forward to your upcoming videos! Thanks for the inspiration!
Lol. Yeaaaaa. In my earlier videos I would always mention that if you wanted to make something to sell make atleast 5-10. The wife and family will claim them!
Thnx for this info Matthew. I'm trying to translate this for my own country. Wood prices have shot up here as well, but I can't seem to find decent replacements for those fence pickets. The ideas you gave here are fantastic. I'm not the one who would buy those items but the local gardening store are indeed full of them. Once again, awesome content and info and thnx for sharing.
Mathew I have made money using a $87 palm router. Make a design in any board paint it any color. I have the ends of a privacy fence pickets I got for free. I put my five minute router art on it with a rustic outside frame (scrap) sell at local handmade shops at varying prices depending on size. Sold 12 X 12 s for $85.
Recently discovered your youtube page and I'm hooked, especially with the fence picket usage. I am about to start some planters and a few other things, but I needed a small rustic night stand and used 1 1/2 pickets to make it. It came out great! The one thing I was surprised about is the shrinkage in these things. I used PT (can not find cedar) and I lose about 1/8" due to shrink, which can lead to 1/4" when you butt two against each other. I don't care as its rustic, but man, these things shrink. Thank you for all you do posting these projects.
I'm gonna make a video where I make a bunch of these from all your other videos, and we'll see which ones sell the best! Another great one, thanks Matt. Also, do you write script, or just off the cuff with most of your chatting? I typically end up sounding like you do at the end with all your out takes. Ha, have a good one, brother

Another well done video. Please keep them coming.
Heck Yea! Trial and error... and you found your money maker.
Keep it up!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking I bet your kids feel flush when they're walking around at school lol... definitely going to teach my little'n some carpentry and have him making some money when he's bit older
Why I hit the culled pile at Home Depot. I got 14 2x8x14 pine boards for $6 each. That's a lot of strips!
Yes! I agree with many other commenters! This is great advice and not just for wood workers alone. Sensible advice for all crafters ! Over and above with the many ideas of simple, fast, sellable products. Great video and business tips!! Thank you !!
Im not going anywhere! Thanks for watching!
Love these videos about smalls.
Love this channel !
Always excited when new video drops
Much appreciated
Glad you like them!
You are so unbelievably helpful and informative. Thank you!!!!!
You are so welcome!
Thats awesome and love the plan! Keep doing what your doing! Thanks for watching!
@@MatthewPeechWoodworking no worries I wait for the video every week more would be great 😃. I've certainly got plan in my head just need try get it into action and pull it off but milling my own wood is also helpful with certain projects even for smalls. 🏴👍
Lol. It's not for everyone. But I found that I like my second job better than my first... Thanks for watching!
I tried to build a business and found I was super stressed all the time. My shop is my sanctuary so now I just do what I want when I want. But I’m thrilled it’s working so well for you.
Another good mine of a video there Mr Peach. Thank you for what you do I appreciate your hard work.
Only been subbed for a few months but really love your content. Thanks for what you do.
Just found ur channel and I'm hooked. Lol I've always wanted to really get into woodworking. I've been playing with a few projects for a while
I made a jumbo bird feeder from 4 cedar fence pickets, 1-1/4" deck screws, and an air stapler.
One of your best videos. Thanks
( ....and if I can't resist; perhaps even a "who laughs last")
Once you get the first inspiration, you realize YOU can do it, and you start working, many more ideas will come.
From a 60 year old newbie woodworker from Denmark with a big smile on her face
Hey Matthew! I've been watching your videos on a binge. I just found your channel last week, and I have learned a lot!
I plan on starting my woodworking business in the very near future! My husband and I are buying a new home soon, so I'm waiting until after we move. I will have a space I can actually work in!
I think it will be a great way to help pay off our new mortgage along with other things we will be doing.
My new woodworking business is entirely your fault 😆. Looking forward to a new adventure! Tyfs and keep up the good work!
Awesome! Welcome aboard! Lol I’ll accept that fault.
Damn, I'm starting to get excited to get back into woodworking again!
Sounds awesome... and you have the first step complete... You have a plan!
Sweet Carhartt shirt, and thanks!
I watched one of your videos and later when my wife Got home , I was showing her , She said umm yea that’s Matthew , he’s a nurse in Owensboro.. 😂 small world. She’s a Nurse practitioner in Owensboro
Lol. Thats too funny! Very small world.
I’m definitely thankful I found you here …. I’m staring my business and make sure I build I cute for my family thanks for the this and for all the works that goes a long editing all this from a fellow youtuber Ik is lots of work keep it up and thanks again
I made the 4x4 owls from the last video for my wife. We used beer bottle tops for the eyes .
Dude you rock brother! Thanks for the great ideas!
Any time!
Just found your channel on my feed. Great content. Subscribed in Canada!🇨🇦👍
Thanks for the support!
Thank you so much for your time and knowledge to each us. I really appreciate you for all you do to help and teach us!!
this is great loving your videos this is the first time i have seen your chanel i was looking for a hobby now i am retired thank you
Thanks for watching! You can do it.
These are great tips. I would love to see a video on how you ship items while remaining affordable.
I cover shipping in an older video a bit. Flat rate shipping boxes are the best.
Thanks for these Smalls videos. They've given me lots of great ideas
Great Info... 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾 South Carolina Low Country 💙..
Thanks! Just think about non traditional building material for your area...
High profits! You got my attention.
One of my doctors has live edge counters in his office. Kinda cool look.
That "quilt" design could be marketed as a table top as well!
Oh yea! Would make an awesome table top.
Thanks for sharing have a blessed day
Matthew, thank you for the helpful and informative videos. Could you do a video on “Methods of Marketing Products”. It would be very helpful. Thanks
Another thought provoking video. Thanks again. 👍
No worrries Philip! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this channel. Truly love your content
Thanks sooo much for your simple and brilliant ideas 💡 👍
