Hey Oddie. I'm this is old but hope you see it. I was wondering if the graphics etc were part of an actual movie? Or are they just pieced together? Don't worry haha I am NOT Catholic! That opening salvo with the nun...why is her head like that??? I still can't find it in the vid. And the way she talked freaked me the F out! Was hoping I could see the movie if it's real. Tis' the season and all. Thank you my friend. Hi Oddette! Have we ever met your lovely Mrs? I continue to miss so many things from my faves. I fall down rabbit holes all the time sadly😮 And I have subbed to so many channels over the last idk 15yrs or more. RUclips can't keep up haha. Sorry I'm so wordy🙏🏼🍁☠️👻🎃 This production was SO creepy! I love it. And I thank God I was not brought up or born in that time!🫣

You know what? This reminds me a lot of judges and a lot of cops etc today. Refusing to believe anything that does not fit their CHOSEN narrative\s. Like when kids go missing. Maybe not as bad now but...they still just want to jump on the "they ran away" bandwagon. And some still try to tell scared people that they have to wait 24 or 48 or 30 yrs before they can file a missing person's report and actually START looking. Ugh.🤬😓

What an intriguing story. It was horrifying but I had to finish hoping for a positive ending. Those involved died horrible deaths. I have know personally of a nun and a priest who left the church because they fell in love. They began their own church and had followers that increased. Personally I think few are suited to the celibacy. What a sad and cruel ending to these people's lives. Applause to the masterful story telling.

The book was among over a hundred left behind in the house my father bought when I was five years old in 1956. All the books were in my bedroom! Eventually I discovered Huxley's book. I couldn't put it down. I was attending a catholic school at that time so I was seeing nuns every day. No demonic possessions but Sister Mary Austin had a crush on Father Gallio who was enamored of Miss Rosa, the attractive 3rd grade lay teacher. That's as close as we got to any drama😅

This is the first time I had ever heard this story. We all hear of the infamous Salem witch trials and so on. But, this was a first for me. So sad that whether they were coerced or not, all of the involved really did “sell their souls to the devil”. Thanks for sharing.

    • @a.alistair9087

A historian pointed out that the Salem Witch Trials became highly regretted as soon as they ended which is why witch trials never happened again on any scale in English American colonies again. Witch trials began in Europe ages before that and would continue in some parts of Europe throughout the 18th century. Yet the Salem Witch Trials continue to fascinate everyone as a quintessential American epoch.

I remembet thinking that it was close e to heaven Not only because of the beauty I saw but to this day, I can remember that sense of serenity snd peace thst i felt walking through there. The nuns all wore habits like the one that Sally Fields wore on the Flying nun on tv and to me they looked like some of Gods angels. 😳 My goodness! What a story! I lost all illusions about the true piousness of the religious sect a long time ago, but this story beats everything. With five of the deadly sins (pride, greed, lust, envy and wrath) on prominent display, I can only conclude that their presence had something to do with people being forced into a vocation not of their own choosing. Oddie I’m so glad you’ve covered this topic in your own inimitable style. I wouldn’t want to hear anyone else tell this story. Dear God what a time it must have been. I’ve seen The Devils, with the magnificent powerhouse Oliver Reed, it had a profound impact on me. Grandier’s end haunts me, and omg did Oliver Reed act the pants off that role.
Those women had such little choice, so few options, and any mental health issues would understandably have flourished in such a rigid, obsessive environment.
I appreciated especially your measured telling of the nuns’ story, bringing it to vivid life in a way that felt as very real as it was. This is one story that doesn’t need embellishment to make it truly horrendous and quite insane. Thank you Oddie! Much love to you and Odette❤️

@@ObsoleteOddity you’re very welcome, I loved what you said after the video had finished too. A religious life can be incredibly fulfilling but you certainly need to want to live that way. I’ve been reading about the nuns who offered themselves as anchorites, being locked away in a room without human contact, only receiving food through a slot in the wall, praying and dispensing advice through a covered window in the wall. That’s a devotion to one’s beliefs that astounds me. Being someone who can talk the leg off a chair, I know I’d fail miserably. On the whole, the history of religious orders is fascinating and complex. I think about the nuns in this story a lot, there’s such a desperation to their actions and the reasons behind their hysteria. It’s all so tragic. Thank you Oddie❤️

@DeidreL9 yes, being forced into such a life is a whole lot different than choosing it willingly - especially if the latter can opt out at any stage.

I can attest! “Oddie” is a most responsive & generously courteous Host! 💐🌼🌹💐
Now, about those nuns; I don’t recall hearing anything that sounded as if Jeanne des Ange repented, atoned, made any recompense to Grandier’s family, friends, nor to the other nuns under her priory superiority & influence.
But I am willing to review the ending, just to be honestly certain. To be even-handed, it sounds as if she never questioned the motives, the designs, nor even certain individual directives given to her by the “priesthood.” Following blindly & ultimately, submissively (for such a forceful person) into carrying-out whatever deceptions she herself performed, fully-aware & intent on inducing other women of the vocation to follow her lead. But given the era, she was in no real position to resist, short of resignation-or worse for herself.
It does seem that The Inquisition age was simply rife to the point of mass-insanity with needless “religiously-conducted” bloodshed. Just like in this case, anyone rational would wonder-even in that period-WHY the result most sought-after was death, in such an atrocious number of matters?? Especially, when a simple transfer, removal, or replacement would’ve just as well served!!
People’s hatred of people can really set them beside themselves, obviously. “Out of all compass,” as the British expression goes, I think.
The real “miraculous” wonder emerging from the story is that the clergy somehow acted as if they were convinced that they were carrying-out an actual religion, letting the apparent “convictions” expressed by some others overrule every single qualm of decency.
All with nobody intervening who was ever powerful enough to even remind them of the differences between “religion” per se, and acts of warfare that were tantamount to utter depravity-torture before homicide. Mutilations. Violent assaults. AFTER pronouncing the individuals “afflicted” themselves!!
In this case, knowing themselves & each other to have been idly indulging in vanity, jealousy, envy, & only Heaven knows the rest.
Psychopathy, masked as Religion, then carried out in play-acting, even after everyone most directly involved is deceased.
They really should’ve all just gotten married, or just opened a brothel, & changed the rules, made up some better-suited ones they could actually handle. Who was it they were trying to convince? Loudun? The king? The children??

Talk about austere, my coworker is a former nun who took a vow of poverty. The condition of the convent in which she lived was so bad, it should have been condemned. Pleas for repairs went unheard. Then her mother died and left her six million dollars. Rather than turn the funds over as expected, she left the order, had the convent razed and replaced it with a new, modest one. She is still a devout Catholic. She no longer hands over money to the church. When she sees neglect, she remedies it. Whenever I hear stories about nuns in a convent, I think about that. Thank you for the story!
