Yeah P Diddy ‘borrowed’ basically the whole damn song. Didn’t ask if he could before he released it. Paid a lot in royalties to Sting and had to give him writing credit. But then they performed it together a few years later so all water under the bridge now and Sting liked Diddy’s version to honor Biggie.

@Shame nolan They can interpret it any way they wish. This is true. But they would be wrong. Sting clearly states the meaning and why he wrote it. Only the artist can reveal the true meaning.
@Phil Lee 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership."
@Phil Lee “I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head,” he said, “sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song.” Then he said: “I didn’t realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, of surveillance and control.” There is the admission: “I didn’t realize at the time.” And “.. I think I was thinking…” In another interview from 1991, he was open about this shift, saying the song offers “no release of emotions or change in the point of view of the protagonist. He is trapped in his circular obsessions.” Yes. Then comes the key admission: “Of course,” he says, “I wasn’t aware of any of this. I thought I was just writing a hit song, and indeed it became one of the songs that defined the ’80s, and by accident the perfect soundtrack for Reagan’s Star Wars fantasy of control and seduction.” There is confirmation that the sinister reading of this lyric was never part of the songwriter’s intention. So it does not qualify as the true story behind the song. It is a revised story. It was, as he said, not intended as sinister while writing it; that darkness was only added to it later. Which, though it might work, is simply false. “Of course,” said Sting, “I wasn’t aware of any of this. I just thought I was just writing a hit song!”

That's not accurate. Usually an artist has to pay royalties and get permission from the copywrite holder to sample another song. If they don't, they're setting themselves up to be sued.
@@jabreck1934 Right, cause Puff didn't get permission to sample it. I'm not saying artists never sample without permission. In your original statement you made it sound like royalties and acknowledgement never happens. I'm saying thats not correct.

Dude u are cool as hell can't stop watching u I'm 59yrs and u make my day keep it up u rock Carla moody from texas
You want some real Funk?? Check out "When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around". Your shoulders will love it!!
I forgot all about that song!!!
Me too - nice one
Can we just acknowledge how much volume the Police's hair has?? Never noticed before 😂 Great song choice 👍🏼🎶🤩
A lot of Rap does use samples from older songs.
Tom Scott - Today was used by Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Reminisce
Yep!
Biggest and most notable rap/rock song... Walk This Way.
Oh yes! He’s gotta see that one!
There are samples, and there is P Diddy's use of this song. He basically took the whole song and altered the lyrics. It's more of a cover than a sample, lol. I was so aggravated when I heard his version the first time, the anger of youth lol.
MAAAAAAN!!! MY GUY!!!! YOU SIR, have been my new binge addiction. Yes SIR!!!! COULD BE MORE HAPPY to find this reaction channel to music with all your white name mis-pronunciations** ITS SO GENRE PERFECT!!!! MAN, maaan....... Maaaaaann
Try The Police - De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da
Played on every single wedding party all around the planet for almost 40 years now, this song is the most misunderstood song of all times. It's NOT a love song, it's a song about stalking. But hey - it's one of the best songs ever, yet! Right? Right.
Please react to " Alice's Restaurant" . The original 1967 performance. By Arlo Guthrie.
Wow, that's digging deep!
Save it for Thanksgiving. It's a tradition.
@@budhenry426 do you think we can convince him to do it as his last reaction before Thanksgiving or on Thanksgiving? He won't know why, he'll just have to trust us
@@DMB088good luck, his ass never listens to me 😂
@@budhenry426 me either
The Synchronicity tour 1983, my first concert. I was 13 yrs old. Damn. They’re one of the best bands, more please!!!
Once" sampling" became popular, things got weird. I don't like it. There's no royalties or even acknowledgement.
Everyone knows the Men in Black tune. I kept expecting" forget-me nots."
That's not accurate. Usually an artist has to pay royalties and get permission from the copywrite holder to sample another song. If they don't, they're setting themselves up to be sued.
@@nicotti I understand what usually happens and the consequence.
So does Katy Perry, Alan Thicke, Vanilla Ice............
@@jabreck1934 I believe you mean Robin Thicke. Alan is his actor father.
@@nicotti P Diddy got sued by Sting for using this music.
@@jabreck1934 Right, cause Puff didn't get permission to sample it. I'm not saying artists never sample without permission. In your original statement you made it sound like royalties and acknowledgement never happens. I'm saying thats not correct.
Sting and The Police are huge. His solo albums are class. Ten Summners Tales is a great album. Sting is from my home town.
Here’s one: Big and Rich, “Save a horse, ride a cowboy”
My favourite band when i was younger, song writing of the highest order, sting at his best.
Dude you would love a song that Sting wrote called *FRAGILE* There's a live version that he stands beside Stevie Wonder, on stage, as Stevie kills it vocally 😢 then there's his harmonica😍
Bruce Horsby & The Range - The Way It Is!!!
It will blow your mind even more!!!!!!
ZZ Top Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, or Pearl Necklace. Please???? You will love them.
It’s great to learn and music is our vehicle! Love it. Thank you.
Yep you lot sampled it “but” don’t forget Rolling Stones, Cream, Led Zepplin etc would not exist if it wasn’t for the blues legends from the early 20th century, so it’s fair.
If it truly a 'sample' not the entire song lol
So much talent comes out of Britain 🇬🇧
British made music is some of the very best!!! ❤️
I so agree with other comments!! Leo- you gotta see “walk this way”, Aerosmith and Run DMC collab! 2 of my favs!!! You’ll be 😲, for sure!!! ❤️🧡✌️✨
This!
Seriously, the Aerosmith-DmC collaboration was amazing.
You'd love it.
You’re right on point with this one. Glad you’re getting to experience the original.
P diddy's has rarely ever had an original thought. His samples got out of had. He's basically a RIP off artist.
Back in the day, there were so many people slow dancing etc to a song about a creepy stalker. But it is a beautiful creepy stalker song.
They gave permission fir P.Diddy to release it twice!!
P.Diddy also released a version for Princess Diana in it with her voice talking! Haunting!
We always called this the "stalker" song!😅🤣❤✌
The song is sampled in Puff Daddy's 1997 hit "I'll Be Missing You," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 11 weeks and won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group; Sting ultimately participated in a performance of "I'll Be Missing You" at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards
It was so much fun to replay the part where you slowly realize you knew it in a different version...
Sampling, covers, remixes, and mashups... music wouldn't be the same without them. It's like audio nostalgia, dusting off your parents old records from the attic and mixing them into a sick new beat.
Well said!
Excellent song
I grew up on this classic! Love it!
The Police, incomparable musicians all around. High energy, deep, fun music. The best 80s trio to fill a dance hall...
Driven to Tears
Canary in a Coalmine
Demolition Man
Invisible Sun
Spirits In the Material World
Hunger for You
THE AMAZING SONG, IS BEAUTIFUL ❤️
Spirits in the Material World, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Walking on The Moon, De Doo Doo Doo De Da Da Da, the list is endless
