  • In April 2024 we walked from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela as a family of five.
    Camino Update Day #3
A steady stream of traffic outside of our windows kept us company for most of the night. Probably really fast pilgrims on the highway rushing to the next stop to get the best bunks before us. We got up in the morning and had breakfast with all the other pilgrims. Talked with a guy from Seattle who had heard others talking about us…all good things…supposedly.
We got on the trail to beat out the last of our energy. We had some smaller uphills and downhills, but with mud, stream crossings, and extremely narrow trails, we kept everyone entertained who watched us pinball down the path. One guy asked if we were sponsored by the stroller company. I told him they would probably not appreciate the abuse we were putting it through.
We stopped for coffee twice, the first time had lots of character but very little to offer beyond that. The second served up big glasses of café con leche and tortilla de patata, this time with spinach and zucchini.
We were blessed to spend the second half of the hike along a river path, blessedly flat and well shaded.
About 2:30 we walked up into the city of Pamplona, a historic walled city known for keeping Hemingway occupied for quite some time. We found our lodgings and trudged up to the third floor with all our belongings. Refurbished from an old building, there are exposed beams and ancient walls. Really excited to find out it is in the party district of the historic city! Can’t wait.
Finally found a restaurant with an open kitchen after wandering for quite some time and shared two steaks and one hamburger.
Got the kids back and showered, gave them sorbet for their hard work, let them watch a movie and into bed. We have a big climb tomorrow, crossing “Forgiveness Pass” which was highlighted in the movie, “The Way.”
