  • In April 2024 we walked from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela as a family of five.
    Camino Update Day #4
We lightened the load a bit today, with a big climb ahead of us. One of the kid’s pajamas went straight into the trash. Every little bit helps. We walked through the remains of some big parties last night, vestiges from the Holy Week’s holidays…yes, the holiday has holidays. Picked up talking to Dave from Seattle and Tanzen telling jokes, then began to climb, climb, climb.
Met a guy from our own little town in Galicia. He told me the bar where he goes on weekends and said to meet him there when we both finish. Small world.
Had help up a longer section from a guy from Korea. We picked up some socks the wind had blown off the packs of some ladies. Found out they’re from California.
At the Alto de Perdón, or High Place of Forgiveness, we took pictures and appreciated our progress. Thankfully the Devil didn’t show up and offer us water in exchange for our souls, as the legend goes. Just people asking for a ride down in our running stroller.
We bounced and bobbled down the rockslide on the back of the mountain. No one was injured, but we always check to see if fillings jiggle loose.
It was a slog to the last village of the day, trying to keep the kids hydrated and fed. Every day about 12:00 they shut down and go into the hurt cave. Have to figure that out in the coming days.
Made it to Puente de la Reina and got our room in the hostal. A spacious 80 square foot room for all five of us and our luggage. Everyone is so tired, I don’t think we will notice.
Number of 4 inch spiders found outside our bedroom door this morning: 1. And 1 is enough.
    Number of steps: 36,756
    Next stop: Estella
    Percentage Completed: 11.7
