Dude, this is the BEST tutorial I've seen on exposing SLOG2. I've watched so many tutorials and none of them explained it as well as you. Thank you so much!!
Thank you for your explanation. I'm a photographer and I've NEVER really bothered with video until I decided to start a youtube channel to show some of my work and tips. I honestly didn't find the "SLOG2" setting until i watched a video just prior to yours on WHERE the setting was which was hidden inside the picture profile! So I set up the "PP#'s" for different uses and I guess you can say I have an SLOG profile for my photography that's completely changed my total images like 1000% more bad ass thanks to you lol.
Great explanation and content Erwin. For some reason, most folks explain exposing for slog in the most confusing way to the point I don't think they know what they're talking about. Like they say, if you cant explain something simply, you dont understand it well enough. Great job and hope to see more valuable content from you. Thanks !
Well, I'm Italian but I speak English a little. This is the best video of the conversion and exposure correction. I followed many Italians but you're better because of your simple methods and efficiency. Well done and thanks a lot. Subscribed.
Hi Erwin, this video is quite old so I am not sure if you will read that comment but thank you for that video, like most people in the comment I had hard time to wrap my head around correctly exposing s-log2 but your video made a lot of sense and everything is clearer now. Awesome work!
Wow - this was by far the most useful and clear explanation on Slog + False Colors. Now I wanna use it - finally :-P (Still new to videography...) Greetings from Germany
This is the most helpful video I have ever seen on exposing S Log. I'm shooting a practice micro short on Tuesday and thankful I found this video. Super helpful 🤙
Dude I loved this!!! You explained so much and I have such a new found understanding of zebras, false colors, etc. I'm messing around with SLOG2 since I just got a Field World Monitor F7. Much love man from Canada, thank you :)
Thank you so much, mate. About to start shooting on SLOG2 and this just made it far easier to wrap my head around. Thank you for your informative, detailed and simple explanations of concepts people often make confusing! Liked and subbed. Good luck.
you've just gained a subscriber, you explained this exposure situation in great detail. I appreciate that, because I shoot music videos in many different environments.
Oh mään thank you so much for this great explanation Erwin!! I need to say: It's soooo great to hear you talking! You have a special accent which is super nice and then at 3:12 it sounds like you would rap. :D Greetings from Germany! :)
Great Video Bruh. Thanks, just confirmed a lot of my reasons for moving towards using false colors and getting away from histograms. I'm picking up a Atomos Shogun7 for my Sony FS5 and plan on sticking with false colors for exposures.
Dude! Mind blown! This video was very informative and really helpful. Thank you so much! I've gone through a ton of videos but no one mentions these things, that exposing +2 stops won't give u the right exposure. Also, can you please share the settings your using for your picture profile?
Beautiful video man. Always wanted to learn false color. You explained it in a way that was easy to follow along & learn. You’re a great teacher! Thank you
This is a great video man. You’re right up there with Gerald Undone and I think your examples are better. Keep on doing these! They’re incredibly helpful!
Some good explanations here. But not sure why you think 70 IRE is proper exposure for S-log on skintones. When you do your finishing the skintone looks fine because IMO you are shooting 1.5 stops over when the skin is at 70 IRE - not sure if people watching are getting that. Rec709 skin highlights are fine at 70 IR but you might find that 55 IRE in bright light ( outside ) will give better results. I would be that your finished grade the majority of the skin would be close to that.
I tried to explain that, in the bright sunlight example. Sometimes you have to compromise the skin tones a bit but 60-70 ire is the sweet spot for skin. When you do the correction and grade then your skin will probably be around 55 ire at that point but the log footage itself should be around 60-70. That’s why I used examples of direct sunlight and backlight situations to show that
Erwin very good video and explained is a very straight forward way. Do you do the same thing for low light and then bring down the highlights and shadows? Just trying to find a reliable technique to expose in low light situations. Thank you.
Very nice! I've been using and experimenting with zebras around 70IRE- it's been working out quite good so far- also i have been using the Joel Famulero Arri Luts for sony! They work great even with underexposed shots
Man thanks a lot this was the easiest explanation put there been trusting the mm spot to much and keeps on under exposing my slog2 on a6300, also my zebra's was in 107+ that did not help also...
Could you talk about the zebra settings some more? A lot of folks are saying to set it to 107+ for Slog2, but you're using 95 and it works out for you. Thoughts?
Ire is an old scale, 0 would be pure black and 100 would be max white at the time this scale was created based on current display technology. So by setting it to 95, that’s basically JUST before things hit max ire which means if you see zebras, you’re either at or beyond 100. But with modern technology, in some cases you’re able to go beyond 100 ire, some displays can show more than what was possible when the scale was created so often you’re able to go beyond the normal 100. But it’s less reliable to me to go by that because it’s very situational. If I set it to 95 ire, I KNOW I’m safe and I still have some wiggle room above that. But like I explained in the video, zebras are good but not better than false color because you can be extremely precise with it with very little effort.
Hey, thank you for your video. How do you shoot shadow rich / darker forest / city scenes in S-Log2? Any tips for shooting these particular scenes? Best
Not true because 10 bit helps with grading. The moment you start to manipulate the colors in editing, that’s when 10bit shines. The footage grades much better so the final result is more solid.
Literally the most helpful video on s-log 2
Definitely
Great ass video
Dude, this is the BEST tutorial I've seen on exposing SLOG2. I've watched so many tutorials and none of them explained it as well as you. Thank you so much!!
Glad you found this helpful!
These were the best 7 minutes ive seen on how to actually expose slog 2 and ive probably watched most of what youtube has to offer, many thanks!
I agree alot of other videos I found didn’t go into as much detail and failed to describe things properly in a way that beginner could also understand
Bro, you are a genius. This video is so freaking good. Concise, enough detail, and just excellent all around. Thank you.
This has been the most helpful slog/false color video I’ve ever come across. Thank you so much for this info.

Dude....you the first one that explained it in a proper way and how to use Zebra and false collor.
Great explanation and content Erwin. For some reason, most folks explain exposing for slog in the most confusing way to the point I don't think they know what they're talking about. Probably the best slog tutorial on youtube
I’ve been filming for a while now and never fully understood false colors until NOW ! Thank you ✌🏽

Good man, Erwin. I'm sure many will find this very helpful.
Great video man! I just bought a Atomos monitor to use with my old Sony a7s, never gonna miss exposure again. =)

Like the others said, great explanation. Thank you. My friend wants me to shoot slog 2 as his second shooter

Dope explanation and presentation fam. What would the exact picture profile settings be?
best explanation ive seen so far
First time I have heard 'com-promises'! I like it.
Erwin very good video and explained is a very straight forward way. Do you do the same thing for low light and then bring down the highlights and shadows? Just trying to find a reliable technique to expose in low light situations. Thank you.
Thanks dude I've learnt so much from this one video!!
Which picture profile is settings best for slog-2 for best video quality.guid me
Very nice! I've been using and experimenting with zebras around 70IRE- it's been working out quite good so far- also i have been using the Joel Famulero Arri Luts for sony! They work great even with underexposed shots
Brilliant video. Clear and precise, as it should be.
Thanks Erwin. That was a very clear explanation.
Thank you so much! Excellent explanations and great tools you shared!
Thank you erwin.. This cleared up some nagging questions I had. Great work.
Very clear info. Thanks for putting this together.
Very clear instructions, great video. Thanks mate.
Very very well explained! I wish every tutorial was like this. Keep up the good wordk. Like & sub
Very sharp brother, good information!
Good work👍, thanks a lot.
But your lut don't exist on your link😢.
Thanks for that!!! Nice luts too!!!
Great video, thanks for posting! Do you use the slog 2 pp as is, or do you change any of the settings on it when you shoot?
Awesome content, thanks for the tips, bro!
Thank you my friend! One question. Is there a difference to slog3? Or is the skin always 60-70 range?
There are exceptions, but that’s the general range. Shooting Slog 3 wouldn’t change the process.
@@erwinmarionneaux thank you very much. You helped me alot!
Great video. Thank you for helping my understanding.
So helpful Erwin! Thanks!
This was excellent, watching again..
Great video man! 😁👌
This is a great tutorial! Fantastic job!
amazing clarity. but what about using slog2 with 120fps. would you go for it? cause i heard they find lots of noise
Almost all of my videos with slow motion have been shot in slog 2
Man thanks a lot this was the easiest explanation put there been trusting the mm spot to much and keeps on under exposing my slog2 on a6300, also my zebra's was in 107+ that did not help also...
This video is excellent, brotha. New sub! Much appreciated.
Could you talk about the zebra settings some more? A lot of folks are saying to set it to 107+ for Slog2, but you're using 95 and it works out for you. Thoughts?

Straight to the Business!
I try!!
So I'm doing a top down unboxing and I want to record in slog 2 but I guess the zebras just aren't there even at 95 ire.
Great video! Good explanation on everything.
Glad it helped, I tried to be as clear as possible
Hey, thank you for your video. How do you shoot shadow rich / darker forest / city scenes in S-Log2? Any tips for shooting these particular scenes? Best
The exact same method would work for any scene. Save the highlights if they are prominent in the scene and let everything else fall where it falls
@@erwinmarionneaux Thanks
Absolutely stellar!! Thanks so much, Erwin!!!!
No problem!!
Great video dude
Very good tutorial! Thanks man
Thanks a lot for the S-Log LUT, much appreciated. :)
Apparently Slog2 clip to pure white at zebra +107 IRE, not 95 at 1:02.
Yes but we use 95 because IRE refers to when displays clip. So even if you were able to retain over 100ire, you wouldn’t be able to display it
@@erwinmarionneaux by that logic there is no point of even recording in 10 bits, since your display can not show it.
Not true because 10 bit helps with grading. The moment you start to manipulate the colors in editing, that’s when 10bit shines. The footage grades much better so the final result is more solid.
This is very informative! Thank you so much!!! Will try it out!
This is so informative. this is the best. thanks
Very useful information. Thanks man!
No problem!
This was fantastic!
Hey, just got me a monitor. I’m wondering do you use 60-70 IRE zebra settings for all shots or only for shots with skin tones? Best
I use 95 ire for all shots. 60-70 is just the range I try to keep skin tones in
@@erwinmarionneaux Thank you : )
