  • This summer, we got the chance to visit Spartanburg, SC and Noonan Race Engineering's new state-of-the-art facility. The Noonan operation is top notch through and through, and it shows in engine builds like this supercharged 4.900 bore space Hemi. Noonan's Barry Pettit walks us through all the details in this Engine of the Week brought to you by ‪@penngrade1motoroil830‬, ‪@elringdasoriginal‬and NPW Companies.

Austin Coil developed a 4.9” bore spaced block based on the Boss 429.
It’s interesting to note that this Noonan 4.9 engine has a valve train option that mimics the Boss 429 system. The rockers are placed on individual pedestals like the Boss.
I think the biggest difference is the intake rocker is flipped around taking some angle out of the pushrod.
I saw one of these being serviced at Orlando back in March or April and was astonished at how the heads resembled the Boss 429 head.

The 4.900 Noonan HEMI heads I've seen retain the completely rotated, opposed valve layout, chamber shape and plug location of typical HEMI engines and don't resemble the Boss 429 configuration in any way. I'd be curious to see the heads you're describing that are available from Noonan for the 4.900 platform.
As for the rocker architecture, the Noonan heads I saw had the 2 shaft system.....although there has been an individual pedestal/bed-plate option for HEMI engines from both Jesel and Barton/TD for many years, as I have that particular system on my PSI screw blown 4.800 HEMI. It's a package that also works on a factory production iron head, as it was initially developed for traditional Super Stock HEMI engines.
I'm considering changing over to this platform and have talked to Noonan on 2 occasions and neither time have they mentioned a cylinder head option that mimics, or resembles a Boss 429. Do you have any additional information on the cylinder head you saw in Orlando???

@@geneticrex 4.9" Hemi heads with individual mounted rockers look a lot like the Boss 9 B441 heads......

@@shvrdavid Individual mounted mini shaft rockers have been available for 4.800 HEMI heads, including stock iron for years. I have the Barton/TD package on my engine.
That particular mini-shaft configuration is also available for a variety of engines, including the BBC and with the valve placement of a BBC even in their heavily rotated aftermarket options, they've never really appeared to resemble a Boss 429.
Although, I guess at a quick glance a HEMI and Boss 429 with it's extreme rotation could fool somebody, especially the full hemispherical Boss head, which I believe is what the A-441???

@@geneticrex I’m just giving my impression of what I saw on the 4.9 Noonan.
Yes the valves were directly opposed at 6 and 12 o’clock. The interesting thing was the billet bridge which provided an individual pedestal for each valve.
Why did I think that was important? Well to my eye that could give the engine designer more flexibility on where the valve could be located and also the valve angles could be easily changed.
This was a feature on the Boss 429. If you look at the current “Roberts” design Boss 429 IHRA Pro Stock head you will see the valves are located at 6 and 12. They also are able to close down the chamber due to the less steeply angled valves. Hence higher compression and lighter pistons.
The 4.9” Noonan I saw did not have typical hemi dual shaft valve gear. It was like the Boss 429 with the exception of the intake rocker flipped backwards to keep the pushrod straighter.
I’m not calling it a copy of the Boss by any means but good ideas seem to always rise like cream to the top.

@@michaelthompson1110There are advantages to the individual mini-shaft configuration including serviceability, which is why the number of platforms that offer it has increased over the years and why I opted for it on my 4.800 engine.
Is it as strong as the dual shaft HEMI architecture??? Not according to the builders I've talked to, but there aren't many of us running Top Fuel. That's probably why the Noonan deal offers both. The few Noonan heads that I've seen, including Kye Kelly's have been dual shaft. I would really like to see the individual system. Maybe Noonan can send me some pics before I decide if I'm going this route.
It's a shame they instituted the RPM rule in Pro Stock, since that really hinders the potential of an engine with increased chamber rotation all the way up to opposed valves by eliminating the over-rev ability of the design. Between that and the fuel change from VP to Sunoco, it basically put an end to the MOPAR Pro Stock package even after they won the last 2 championships before the rules changes.
It's a shame that Pro Stock is without competitive Ford and MOPAR teams, since the competition from all 3 manufacturers is what made the class great from the beginning. Although I did see the Darin Morgan Ford block and head which is more traditional canted valve layout.....so maybe there's hope they can eventually field some competitive cars and break up the current monopoly in the class.

What was Austin Coil trying to run a few years back with a Ford? Was it 4.9 or 5.0?

I've never seen a procharged car make 5,000 horsepower even running the big 144 on it I need to see the video to believe this usually they are under 4,000! He must be taking about a engine dyno but I still don't think the pro charger is going over 5,000 I'll have to see that to believe it!
