  • @EvanSamuels
    @EvanSamuels Год назад +20

    This is really interesting. Just got the Husky and they’ve now updated every issue you mention: includes drawer liners, screwed top, rib nuts, double drawer slide, etc. it also looks like the Yukon has upgraded a few components as well including now being equivalent in height to the Husky. At this point they really look almost identical.
    And as of right now (7/23) the price on both is just under $400
    I’ve been loving the Husky so far but seems like both are great buys atm.

    I see Husky added a few features in the current model that the Yukon had in this model; notably the duel tracks on the bottom drawer. They also added padding and outlets... I think the engineers watch the videos, which is cool.

    • @trickyricky12147
      @trickyricky12147 8 месяцев назад

      Definitely cool if they do watch the videos. If so, it's a win/win for the engineers and the consumers because for the engineers it would make their job slightly easier to see what needs improving at least for the brainstorming aspect. The consumers are also happy with said improvements. Now, in the automotive industry, if they weren't so gung-ho about planned obsolescence that would be a win/win right there too....

    This video made me a convert to your channel because you showed objectivity, critical thinking, and transparency - excellent job! Six months ago I purchased the 62" Husky workbench with adjustable top - that feature is what sold me given my limited shop space. It was my second tool cabinet, but clearly, I did not even know how to do my homework at the time (insert embarrassment here), but it was a huge improvement in quality over my first chest which was a 10-year-old Craftsman Pro. After viewing this, I went to your channel and watched the 72" rolling chest comparison of Husky vs. US General from Harbor Freight, which was an eye-opener for me. So I went out to my shop and was relieved that the 62" workbench had markedly better quality than either of the Husky's you reviewed! The biggest lesson - throw away blind brand loyalty, and DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
    Clearly, this is a rapidly moving marketplace - it's interesting that there is so much rapid change in the tool & shop storage space relative to many other markets. As an example, for some years I've only heard contempt about Harbor Freight from some people around me. For my birthday my lovely wife, not knowing anything other than it was a "tool place" bought me an Inside Track Club membership and that in turn forced me to get to know my local store, and learn a lot about the company and its tools. As I now know, we are seeing a long-term steady improvement in design and quality of Harbor Freight's products. I've bought several, and each time they have exceeded my expectations. At the same time, we're seeing some pretty poor product come out of other stalwart brands. Just like we watched with Japan over many decades, Chinese manufacturing is learning and continually improving. And manufacturers seem to be realizing that we Americans would like to see production that makes sense to be moved back on-shore. At least design, steel, forging, and final assembly and test. With so much changing, big-ticket items deserve objective research. And, in the case of Harbor Freight, that warranty is hard to beat!

    I bought the Husky 52" box in November of 2016, the box came with drawer liners for all 18 drawers and had double slides on both deep drawers. The box purchased was on sale for $498, two of my fellow coworkers bought the same box from separate Home Depots and received entirely different results. I think Home Depot is purchasing boxes under the Husky logo from many different suppiers.

    I believe the Husky has gone up a in price to account for the improved quality. I recently bought the Yukon with a total of 30% discount. At Home Depot, I can often get a 10% discount for being a veteran (doesn't apply to wood and certain other items that have a very low margin.). Either way, I prefer to support Harbor Freight as they have made HUGE efforts to improve quality and service. I feel that they are becoming what Craftsman USED to be. They have stores all over, and their warranty/guarantee is as good as anyone's. We are fortunate to have HF. They've become the go-to for many people.

Perhaps not the "best of the best" but you arent paying that either. The wood top is now fixed like the Yukon, and they also fixed most of the other things too, like the bottom drawers now also have the double slides and they also come with pre-cut drawer liners. Any rust from forming anywhere on a scale of 1 to 10 I would give the Husky Box about a six and a half while the Yukon box I would rate a 10 I was wrong I thought husky would do a better job of building a box thanks for the video

    ok... so its 2019, 2 years after u shot this video, & im in the market for a new tool box... im wanting a good size box with a wood work surface top & im lookin for this perticular us general model... so heres the problem, yukon doesnt offer this box anymore, only box available with a wood top is a similar style box but with 2 "doors" at the bottom instead of all the drawers... so i looked at craftsman, kobalt, husky, us general & several more online, but at the end of the day i decided on the 46" husky with the wood top... after watching this video, & coming to trust (& still do) ur honest & unbiased reviews, i looked over said husky very carefully & saw none of the issues u mentioned (i hope this means they saw ur video, & heard their customers complaints, & made some changes?) i noticed that the paint job was good & had good inside coverage, the drawer liners included were nice & thick, the roller bearings were smooth & overall a nice box... the newer version has a wood top that is bolted on & is a nice solid chunk of real wood, not particle board like the craftsman sears had on the display floor (r.i.p. sears) & its 24.5" deep, as opposed to both the husky & yukon in ur vid that were only 18" deep... it also has an outlet strip down the side with a couple of usb's... & ill admit, i didnt get one of the black ones off the floor, i ordered a red one online, but i couldnt be happier about the quality & the price ...this is my second husky box ...my older ones probably gettin on 10 years old now, & its still holding up great... so personally, ive been very pleased with both of them... & a big "thank u" for all the great videos man!

      I dont have any experience with the Yukon but I just upgraded from the Husky in the video to a 72" US General and its exponential better in terms of quality. Its a very solid box that has some heft to it and can hold a lot more weight. I think whether you go with USG or Yukon would depend on your use. If you are a professional mechanic or hardcore DIY mechanic at home get the US General. If you just want a nice toolbox with a work top to keep household tools in get the Yukon.

    Purchased the Yukon after exhaustive research. Wish I had seen this video prior to purchase just to make me feel better about my decision. Winners win, I bought the Yukon and couldn't be happier with the quality from a $300 mobile drawer storage unit. I would agree the paint finish is far superior and the bolt attachments are key. Moisture is always a possibility as I will roll my unit around as needed so the secured wood top was important too. I bought the white cabinet and it is super clean. With this quality I felt no need to purchase an extended warranty on a cabinet so hearing of the 3 year offer on Husky makes me question that as simply a marketing ploy.

    I am ashamed that says assembled in the USA. I can't see how it's cheaper to spot weld instead of using the rivnuts, knowing they were trying to save on production cost. Having worked at Home Depot, in the receiving dept, I tried to think of the issues we had with all tool chest/boxes....damaged in transit because of how thin they are.

    • @RealToolReviews
      @RealToolReviews  7 лет назад +5

      +Moneypit330 its cheaper because they don't have to buy rivnuts or take the time/machinery to install them......they instead are using robots (most likely) to weld the thin tabs in place at a higher rate of speed with less costs in materials.

    • @Moneypit330
      @Moneypit330 7 лет назад +3

      Real Tool Reviews I did think more about it after I posted and figured a robot was used for spot welds. But also thinking about positioning of the welded tab over the stamped hole versus sticking the rivnut through a hole for positive alignment? The welded tab itself I am sure is cheaper. Either way I am more than happy with my red U.S. General 5 drawer tool cart from HF that I have had for about 7yrs.

    • @steveyulenburg129
      @steveyulenburg129 7 лет назад +4

      You would think a rivnut could also be located by a pre-drilled hole and installed by a robot at about the same speed as a welded plate. But yes, I'm sure you are correct and it would cost a couple of dollars more for this far superior fastener.
      As a side note, I purchase a cheap manual rivnut installer a few years back off of amazon, mainly to install aftermarket products in my vehicles and proceeded to try test one, to rip one out intentionally out of a piece of scrap metal I had drilled a hole and installed one into to see just how strong it was. I couldn't rip the darn thing out without completely destroying the metal around it that it was installed into. A great fastener to say the least! I have since installed many things with it like license plate brackets and aftermarket Lightning, and the great thing is the installations look almost like factory quality instead of the nuts and bolts I used before getting this. They are also great in areas where you can't get to the back to install a nut, like inside of the floor of my SUV where I needed blind fasteners for a gun safe I installed (the gas tank was below it).

    • @PatriotPaulUSA
      @PatriotPaulUSA 7 лет назад +3

      The problem with the rivnuts is they are shipping these flat panels back to the USA to assemble them. The welded tabs are much thinner so they can stack more sheets in a container,etc They want to sell a box that says "Proudly assembled in the USA! and keep a few of the USA toolbox manufacturers working. And it must be 299.99 retail. You have to understand Home Depot sets and demands a price point. The manufacturers have to accomodate that. Its really a screwed up way of doing it. I know they demanded a XXX price point for a certian power tool for example and the manufacture had to figure out a way to build it. Ever wonder why your 18vt Dewalt drill or saw or something is a different part number when you buy it from a big box store- Theres a reason- Price point.

Gets same work done as big thousands of dollar boxes. I would say I hope they had locking drawers since moving box around does make the drawers open on there own. No complains as of now on box. It is solid and gets work done without emptying out the pockets. Would recommend. If your looking just for home then definitely would buy us general.

      US General is the only choice when comparing between the Husky and the Yukon. Both the Husky and the Yukon, which to me, are nothing more than two more boat anchors waiting to grow coral or trick bass into a false sense of security. But, I would suggest going all out on a US General tool box setup. Get more space and quality then need now and that you are shopping for. You will soon find that you need another Tool Box!Why get into the same rut of needing more room when you've already dug that fire pit ... it's time to move on up. Get the HF big guy with every extra add-on that your budget can afford. You will use the space because every tool loving mechanical nut job (me) always gets more tools than needed. I call it -- Getting My Man Stuff. I use the excuse that my son will inherit my tools and boxes to keep the wife's roar down to a barely manageable babble-ramble.

      The 44 inch is a really good box for the price. So are the larger US General boxes. My only gripe with the HF units are the plastic drawer latches, they break REALLY easy. Every one I have seen in the stores had at least one broken. I have one of the older 44" units and it has been a good box. It sets next to an older Craftsman and 2 "truck" boxes. All are stuffed to the gills at the moment.

They are all special order saying it could take a month to get. I went to Lowes to look at the Craftsman box and was not impressed at all and it was more money. I went to go look at the husky and to my surprise, it was exactly like the Yukon in your video. Came with the draw liners, wheels are bolted into rib nuts, Bottom drawers have 4 slides each, not 2, all are soft close slides, wood top is bolted to the box, Inside was completely painted, even came with a built in outlet strip with USB ports. It was $30 more than HF, but they had them in stock and HF wanted to charge $100 shipping. So don't discount the husky anymore! I like mine a lot.
