You can easily read Battle of LA as the band course-correcting back to the elements people liked from the first album, making a much more traditional (i.e. safe, less adventurous) second album, just one album late
I was lucky enough to see them live in 2022 in Wisconsin before they had to cancel the rest of the tour, and it was one of the best damn nights of my life. Absolutely electric, felt as though they never had over a decade-long hiatus. Zach still had a burning passion in his voice, Tom's guitar work was as mystifying as ever, as was Tim's bass, and Brad's drums punched holes into the night sky. Absolute legends.
For me, trying to rank those main three Rage albums is like choosing a favorite child. All near-perfect albums imo, and they all have different standouts.
Evil Empire still has some of my favourite drum grooves on any rock record. Up there with Songs for the Deaf in terms of how to construct addictive, deceptively driven drum parts that aren’t necessarily showing off. As close to a perfect album as you’re gonna get from the genre.
I still have my Rage and Beastie Boys ticket from that tour that got canceled like a few days before because Mike D was still riding a bike like a badass and had an accident. Then, RATM ended up on hiatus. August 2000. Got to see RATM several more times, Beasties once more, and Rage and Wu-Tang together at Rock the Bells. Thought I was gonna die at the latter. Wu was crazy, but never felt such a crowd push once Rage dropped the Star Flag.
Evil Empire was always my favorite, that said I always felt the Self Titled was a more cohesive realized vision. Evil Empire felt unbalanced in its flow and execution. Swapping those two in your list would be the only personal adjustment I'd make.
While I agree in a lot of ways with the placements and reasoning, Battle of LA was my favorite growing up. I actually like the polished production tbh. It’s one of the few hard hitting albums that I think benefits from the polish and I think it really holds up to today. I agree 100% with this list, Rage is my favorite band of all time. In the studio and recording process, i always felt like the beggining of the end was when the band did not improved during Battle Of Los Angeles like they did, more tastefully, in Evil Empire. That's seem the time Zack "gave up" because there was always turmoil between him and Tom about what the band should sound. In terms of composition during that time, it was heading towards what would become Audioslave.
As many others have suggested, a Pink Floyd tier list would be amazing, but I'd love to see something ridiculous like a Melvins, Boris, or Zappa tier list. I feel like that would be a legit descent into madness.
I'm so happy you like War Within a Breath as well. Supremely underrated song, and the "YEAAAHHH" shriek at the back end of the track might be Zack's best scream on any Rage cut, ever.
As much as I love Rage I do feel like they quit at the right time. There wasn't really anything left for them to do, and if they'd kept cranking out albums with the same sound it would've gotten old fast.

honestly i'd put their first three albums all in S-tier and Renegades in A. easily one of the greatest bands to ever do it, their music still feels fresh and relevant to this day
Wrong, first album is clearly S tier - seminal, archetypal...fully formed, elemental...mind altering...guitaristically unique....politically awakening. In the album sleeve/ cassette insert (I had the tape) there was an address to write to to send an SAE for 'rage propaganda'..I did this and heard nothing back for about a year - then one day a purple vinyl record appeared randomly in my mailbox while at uni in first year - it was 'the ballad of Tom Joad'...how cool is that? I saw them in Glasgow Barrowlands a year later on the evil empire tour - still best gig I've ever seen.
Its be really cool to see a ft zack dlr/ ratm tier list, you coukd do that song on bamboozled, rtj fts, no shelter, zacks solo song, one day as a lion, etc. Big Zack fan all around, would love to see it
There is a basically a full album if you include all these features (Also incl. CIA w/ KRS, CotS w/ Roni Size and probably the best one; "March of Death" w/ DJ Shadow).
The debut is a Classic. With a capital C like Nevermind, Thriller, LZ’s III, Slayer’s Reign in Blood. Legendary album. People forget to simply mention the RIFFS on it. Catchy & beyond awesome
It’s a short discography but the fact that they parted ways because of creative differences despite commercial success is so admirable. Especially because of how money oriented the music industry is. The fact that they stuck to their beliefs says so much about the integrity of their message as a band
EE is the best. Incredible and unique mix, and the midway one-two-three punch of "Snakecharmer," "Tire Me" and "Down Rodeo" (maybe my top three songs of their's) just knocks it out the park.
100% agree with this ranking.. Their entire discography is pretty tight but Evil Empire is one of my all time favs and I'm not even the biggest fan of the genre.. You could tell Zack was even more impassioned about the messages he was expressing from spending time in Chiapas, and it lended to a more focused & sympathetic angle to his lyricism instead of just raw angsty fed up outrage like how their debut was. It's also just overall slicker & more badass than their other releases. Plus the cover art & no skip tracklist ugh I could go on..
I'll have to give Evil Empire a listen. I like both their self-titled debut and The Battle of Los Angeles, and I do love "Bulls on Parade", so if that song is any sign of the quality of Evil Empire, I will have to give it a listen.
The rhythm section of this band (Tim commerford and brad wilk) are honestly the unsung heroes. As a bass player, Tim’s basslines in Rage aren’t really that complex but they just ooze coolness. I think more complex baselines in this band wouldn’t have worked as much
@@maxinator317Yeah. It’s a shame that Tim stopped doing slap bass for RATM after the debut album. I think he said in an interview it was because he didn’t want RATM to sound like another RHCP clone band.
I'm glad I saw them on night 1 of their 5 night MSG run last year, that show was 24 years of waiting and he pay off was worth it. Renegades is pretty bad, each of guys picked songs to cover and they made it into an album, I don't even bother with it. I will say their cover of 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' is amazing and sounded incredible live.
Whats a funny thing about RATM is that ring wingers on twitter keep praising this band. Its almost like they have no idea what RATM is saying on these albums. Always seemed so goddamn funny to me how oblivious and dumb conservatives online are.
I'd personally switch Evil Empire with Battle of LA just because I love the variety of sounds you get on BoLA, but they're all banger albums so it doesn't really matter lmao
If 2023 has taught me anything we should reboot RATM and complete tarnish their legacy with mediocre outings. Also, no point in a tier list when every album is an S.

I'm so happy you like War Within a Breath as well. Supremely underrated song, and the "YEAAAHHH" shriek at the back end of the track might be Zack's best scream on any Rage cut, ever.
It's land or death!
My favourite Rage Against the Machine is when they are angry and don’t trust the government. S tier
Still waiting on that long overdue fugazi tier list
Thank you bro I've been thinking this for years
As much as I love Rage I do feel like they quit at the right time. There wasn't really anything left for them to do, and if they'd kept cranking out albums with the same sound it would've gotten old fast.
S. Battle of LA, Evil Empire
A. Self Titled
B. Renegades
Yes, 100% agreed
I might be alone in this, but I’d really love to see a U2 tier list! They’ve genuinely had one of the most interesting careers out of any classic rock band, and their discography is kinda fucking nuts given how lengthy it is!
Are we calling 80s bands classic now farrrrk that age's me
No...please no....
@@Bevtonesome 90's and 00's bands are already rightfully concidered classics lol. But to be fair things become 'classic' a lot quicker now, the word kinda lost a bit of meaning. Whatever, language tends to do that
Achtung Baby is a S tier album.
@@sample2090 doe's this make blink classic? Im not ready haha
honestly i'd put their first three albums all in S-tier and Renegades in A. easily one of the greatest bands to ever do it, their music still feels fresh and relevant to this day
Wrong, first album is clearly S tier - seminal, archetypal...fully formed, elemental...mind altering...guitaristically unique....politically awakening.
We need a Pink Floyd tier list from you Tony
1. Self-titled (S)
2. Battle of Los Angeles (A)
3. Evil Empire (A)
4. Renegades (C)
Correct
Your tierlists are so fun, pls give us more
It’s a short discography but the fact that they parted ways because of creative differences despite commercial success is so admirable.
You will be seeing my lawyer for defamation for putting Renegades in C tier. “Pistol Grip Pump” is one of the best rap rock tracks of all time!!!!!!
How I could just kill a man and Maggie’s farm too 🔥🔥🔥
Give me that Nick Cave and the bad seeds tier list. A one hour video. C'mon
It’s so refreshing to see a Rage video whose comments aren’t filled with right ding ding dongs crying ThEy RaGe FoR tHe MaChInE nOw
Now that Trent Stated that he will not make more NIN music for a while you could make a Nine Inch Nails tier list!
I always thought everyone like the debut more except for me. Evil Empire is a killer album. Somehow I rarely listened to the first and the third.
I think more complex baselines in this band wouldn’t have worked as much
Take the power back is a pretty great bass line
I honestly Brad Wilk is crazy underrated, Tire Me remains one of my favorite rock drum performances
@@maxinator317Yeah. It’s a shame that Tim stopped doing slap bass for RATM after the debut album. I think he said in an interview it was because he didn’t want RATM to sound like another RHCP clone band.
I always forget that Rage introduced me to Devo. I just saw Devo on their farewell tour and it was excellent. Thank you Rage
It’s so wild to think about Maynard almost becoming their singer
As a whole Evil empire is amazing…the production as soooo goood!!!!
bruh just do a pink floyd tierlist already
I adore the debut. Thanks for your comments on Evil Empire, Anthony, I’m gonna go back and listen to it now!
Rage seems to be my consistent favorite band of all time. Thanks for covering this Anthony!
4:42 Far Beyond Driven has entered the chat
Wind Below is an underrated track.
Finally! Been waiting for RATM content 😅🎉
Down rodeo has one of the most jaw-dropping opening lines I’ve ever heard
Bro I've been waiting for this for years, thank you melon
Whats a funny thing about RATM is that ring wingers on twitter keep praising this band. Its almost like they have no idea what RATM is saying on these albums. Always seemed so goddamn funny to me how oblivious and dumb conservatives online are.
Anthony, nice list, good list, very fun indeed. But: BEATLES TIER LIST WHEN?
I'd personally switch Evil Empire with Battle of LA just because I love the variety of sounds you get on BoLA, but they're all banger albums so it doesn't really matter lmao
Shoutout to Mic Check since Anthony didn’t mention it at all when discussing BoLA. It’s my favourite Rage track of all time.
If 2023 has taught me anything we should reboot RATM and complete tarnish their legacy with mediocre outings.
Also, no point in a tier list when every album is an S.
The Ghost of Tom Joad gives Renegades a full letter upgrade over what it actually deserves imo.
I didn’t know the money store was a rage album
When you’re worst album is a C and it’s a covers album, that’s not too bad
Saw them last year and maaaaaan… Best show I’ve been to hands down.
Rush tier list!!! Such a great discography. Fly by Night, Moving Pictures, Grace Under Pressure, etc.
hmm interesting,
i think i rate Battle of Los Angeles in A
And the debut in S
Self titled then Battle of Los Angeles then Evil Empire then the covers album
YES, I THOUGHT WE'D NEVER GET THIS
Huge credit to this band for exposing me to actual leftism as a 90s american suburban kid with conservative parents
so true. even though i didn't grow up when they released all their albums. they still exposed me to corrupt things i never heard about.
@@carterblack it 100% laid the ground work for me to be more open to it later on in life. Congratulations Zach, you made a Marxist out of at least 1 listener.
We’ve been waiting for years for you to do a Pink Floyd tier list
