After listening carefully for years, it is my opinion that the New York Voices trump all other groups n their field. Nobody sings close harmony so controlled, so powerfully with a 'jazziness' that will not be denied. They breathe jazz from every pore! If it sounds like I love them, well that is an understatement! Aces!
Incredible arrangement. Harmonies, tempo changes, top voice after the solo (I wish Darmon had played it on tenor, but scat was beautiful). This group is truly a gift to the musical ear.
I have been praising this group for over two decades. It's not just the extraordinary arrangements and the tone they manage to accomplish during the close harmonies, but it the true musicality of a uniquely soulful American genre accomplished with glee. BRAVO.
im a highschool multi-genre vocalist, and i had the oportunity to work with kim in a small group i was performing in. she is a very good and effective coach. helped me try some different syllables with scat improvisation. concert was less than 24 hours ago. great success!
Absolutamente perfecto, swing, arreglo orquestal superlativo, armonizaciones increíbles, arreglo de voces superfino, afinación perfecta y sobre todo mucha alegría.....viva la música
Have you ever seen anything better than a bunch of professional musicians and superb singers having a great time, doing their awesome craft and making us enjoy the moment? I do not think so. This musical number cannot get any better.
i played with them on Dec 3, 2010 at James Hubert Blake. this was an amazing experience i will never forget. playing with such amazing artists when your still in high school is the greatest. many will never get that opportunity.
you need to check out New York Voices "on a clear day".......NEW YORK VOICES "on a clear Day" at Java Jazz Festival this is the link. sooo very different , but truly amazing. tons of scatting.
Well I like this chord very much. I checked it on the piano, it is clearly a Bb 7(9/#11/13) to end the gorgeous intro/outro chord progression. The idea of course is not to resolve to the home key (F) but to give it an unexpected twist. It sounds resolved and smooth to me, not tagged-on or unnecessary at all. This arragement is absolutely as fantastic as is the performance by everyone.
On a clear day Rise and look around you And you see who you are On a clear day How it will astound you That the glow of your being Outshines every star You'll feel part of Every mountain, sea, and shore You can hear from far and near A world you've never, never heard before And on a clear day On that clear day You can see forever, and ever, and ever And ever more
Darmon is a sax player--Plays a MEAN EWI solo on a NYV track "The Sultan Fainted." It also appears he did the arrangement of this one here. What a great performance! These would be REAL musicians here.
Hey New York Voices, On Any Day, We Can Listen To You, Forever. S U B L I M E,👌👌👌 In these times of extreme adversity, i wish you God's Blessings and Protection.
Ithaca rocks! Ok I went to the other ithaca college...which btw sucks in music...pretty damn cold in winter...great town if like a lot of upstate ny a bit rundown...
@jazzx251 Yup. I would have stayed on the F minor. I think the song would have ended more smoothly that way. Nevertheless, the arrangement and the performance are pretty smooth as they are. Definitely one of my favorite NYV tunes.
Was the harmonic scat singing part arranged before? How could they make the harmony for scatting like that? I mean they knew each vowel that the other singer sang and knew the melody already. I watched many scat singing performances and found that even legends like Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong couldn't know how the melody will flow or vowels that their fellow singers sang. So I assume this great singing part performance was arranged even the scatting. Am I right?
I was referring to the IV chord itself (the Bb13#11) as an ending chord. Would have liked it better for this tune if they just held the I chord (Fm11) longer and end it like that. This a subjective opinion and a matter of taste, not a display of pretense like Mr. Rios interpreted it as.
I play this song everyday. Everyday.
Because it makes me happy😍

I feel like NYV isn't kitchy or overly showy. Their technical chops are second to none too. Just sublime music
Early real group. Heck, later real group
One of the best versions of this classic ever. Really reaches the soul
My God! What a beautiful performance! And the scatting was sensational; both the guy and the ladies.
Incredible arrangement. Harmonies, tempo changes, top voice after the solo (I wish Darmon had played it on tenor, but scat was beautiful). This group is truly a gift to the musical ear.
I lack adjectives to express how deep the NY Voices touch into my soul! .. Superb !!

i wish there was more of Darmon Meader scatting on youtube! I think he's one of the best, but there isn't much to listen to on youtube. bummer
@jazzx251 Yup. I would have stayed on the F minor. I think the song would have ended more smoothly that way. Nevertheless, the arrangement and the performance are pretty smooth as they are. Definitely one of my favorite NYV tunes.
also... flat 6th (or 13th - theyre the same note, just different octaves), not #11, but i like it regardless.

Guys - forget the harmonic analysis already - just enjoy this for the great performance it is !

Hola Jesús
it's frankly unbelievable that this is a live recording. who needs autotune?
Was the harmonic scat singing part arranged before? How could they make the harmony for scatting like that? I mean they knew each vowel that the other singer sang and knew the melody already. I watched many scat singing performances and found that even legends like Ella Fitzgerald or Louis Armstrong couldn't know how the melody will flow or vowels that their fellow singers sang. So I assume this great singing part performance was arranged even the scatting. Am I right?
Thành Duy If you mean the scat soli in the middle with them singing in unison, it was arranged beforehand. Before that Darmon’s scat was improv
I was referring to the IV chord itself (the Bb13#11) as an ending chord. Would have liked it better for this tune if they just held the I chord (Fm11) longer and end it like that. This a subjective opinion and a matter of taste, not a display of pretense like Mr. Rios interpreted it as.
