Man, I saw the thumbnail for the video and said "no way is that looks like a Convincor! Crap !!" Guess the guy has no idea that you really don't need to hot rod a Checkmate, they are quick enough already.
As a person who has owned 4 boats and wants a 5th, this is the stuff nightmares are made of. I cannot even imagine how upset the owner must be but this is the risk involved with boats. BOAT - Bust Out Another Thousand ! Something is always going wrong.
I made a phone call to a customer, apparently during winter storage a pair of Racoons decided his 32' Century was a perfect place to raise a family. Not only was the entire interior used as scratching post / teething ring, it was also six months of animal waste, male spraying and the smell... He signed the winer storage contract (we were not responsible) and his boat owners ins did NOT cover "Animal Damage." He was a prick anyway ! lol...
i've done sunk boat repairs, it usually ruins gauges and switches but most of the work is fuel tank flush, carb rebuild, tune up components, fluids change, wire harness couplers need to be cleaned and dried too.... its probably a total loss if it sinks in salt water
I had one in salt water. Performed the same steps and rebuilt the engine. Ran fine but it wouldn't get on step. Found a mechanic who couldn't repeat the problem until I told him to take it out of the tank and bring it out for a run on the river. It had a Johnson 70 hp engine with 3 carbs. When he took it out he used his hand to cover the intakes of each carb until he found one that didn't change the engine speed when blocked. Replaced that carb and we had a great boat again.
I wouldn't go that far. It's not the salt water that kills it, its the air after it gets wet. I live on brackish water and have pumped some water in a few motors. Blown exhaust manifolds, head gaskets and even had a couple intake failures. You pull the oil drain plug and watch water run out for the first 20 seconds (oil floats) you have put some water in a motor. All were salvageable. The ones that were not caused by something else breaking got flushed and put back into service. Now gauges, upholstery, wiring, etc are a crap shoot.
The boat is toast now. You have about 45 minutes to get it running before there is damage to the engine. You can leave it underwater for as long as you like but you must get it started right away after it hits the air. My boat sunk a few years back and I drained the carbs as soon as I got it onto the trailer. Had it running within the 45 minutes and everything was good with the engine. I did have to replace the steering cable afterwards as it too rusted up.
My boat flipped over in salt water. Had a 70 hp outboard motor. It was in the water for a week before I got it out. Three weeks later I took the powerhead off and replaced the bearings before starting it up. Ran fine but wouldn't get on step so I brought it to a shop. They said it ran fine so I talked them into bringing it to a nearby river for a retest. They discovered that one of the carburetors was cracked. Good as new after that.
This is what happens when you don't inspect/service the bellows and shift cable bellows. They rip and leak so fast the only option is to get it on the trailer. Batteries can only keep up for a short while. All I/O engines like this have to have the bellows and shift cable bellows changed at appropriate intervals. Especially, if the boat is going to be left in the water. This guy sounded like he didn't even know what they were or where they were.
I use to own a 1991 Pacifica checkmate, I put a 350 race car engine in, 73 mph outdrive went out a few because the rpms to high but hold my beer kind of boat. lol
At the very end there's water coming from the gimble bellows, probably why she sank. Either bellows rubber old and cracked or a muskrat chomped a hole in it. We used to build a chicken wire cage around it to keep the sumbitches out.
Looks like infected by muskrats, no idea why they like chewing on bellows. Way water flowed out of outdrive, that looked to be issue. One of things you need check every spring. Great recovery.
I’ll never leave my boat on the water overnight. I don’t trust rubber boots , bilge pumps , batteries and I definitely don’t trust Mother Nature. Always face the bow towards the waves when docking.

Depends on how long it was under, from the looks of things it wasn't long, heck the batteries were still good, even the engine can easily be salvaged. just change all fluids pull the plugs and get her started as soon as possible and get it warmed up and dry
@@Masterkill45588 The main issue is going to be ripping the floor out and replacing it, as noted in the video, it's marine ply, the transom also could have issues (pretty common on Checkmates anyways), but, it is very much fixable, if you have to the $$$ and desire to go through it...I would.
Actually if everything was sold before the sinking its just a matter of drying everything thing out completely. Put it in a shop crank the heat up and get fans blowing air into the engine bay and berth area. Did it with my friends boat 15 years ago and its still solid.

Convincor's are normally good for 55-60 mph, before you play with anything with the 454, with 502 you are between 70-75 mph depending on the blade.
