Old guy here. During his 90s run, John Walker was used as Marvel's answer to Guy Gardner. Guy was inexplicably very popular during this time as the unapologetic a-hole everyone loves to hate on the Justice League. Every appearance of USAgent then just seemed like a attempt to capture that Gardner magic but he did not.

Wyatt Russell's performance as John Walker in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was probably my favorite part of that show. He went through the most changes and challenges throughout the show and I also couldn't help but feel bad for him. I don’t get why the writers seemed to try to redeem him. TFATWS came out the year after George Floyd was murdered. They should’ve known we’re not about to root for John Walker, a police officer who killed unjustly.

@MaxWelton I think it's VERY important to keep in mind John Walker's state of mind at the time. The government 100% set him up for failure by giving the mantle to an already ready shaken and deeply traumatized man. Also keep in mind, the incident where he killed a man was right after his best friend was murdered in front of him. A guy he knew since they were teens. It's fine not liking a character, but ignoring they are human beings with emotions and traumas is also not cool.

His interactions with bucky and Sam were nothing but respectful as he wanted their guidance. Sam and bucky were being childish and unprofessional. Also grasping for straws to hate the guy, like what's wrong with being called a 'wingman'. If anything walker was far to generous to the two since ehe didn't arrest them as soon as they released zemo. What they do in return? Sorry in advance I didn't know your comment was from 2 years when I wrote it 💀
Marvel has an app called Marvel Unlimited were you can pay a subscription to get access to most if not all their comics. Depending on how many you read it's better value than buying them but obviously you lose access to them when the subscription runs out. They can be a bit awkward to read too since its on a small phone screen so you pretty much have to stay zoomed in and constantly move the page around and some pages work better landscape while others work better portrait so you'll probably be turning your phone around quite a lot. Also depends wether you're fine with digital comics and not owning them physically but it makes it good for trying out comics you might not have bought a physical copy of.
There might be better options but hats all I know of.

Walker wears the "Captain" outfit because him and Cap's dry cleaning got mixed up (they look pretty similar, after all). Since Walker's memories were all scrambled, he just assumed that was his uniform. These things happen from time to time in the Marvel universe. By the time he realized, he and Cap agreed that it looked "super badass" on him, so he kept the look.

Funny thing about the energy shield Walker used during his time in force works: That shield actually got used by Steve Rogers later on.
When Steve lost the Captain America mantle after he had helped the Red Skull to invade a secret military base (Long story, had to do with his first resurrection after he died while wearing his 90ies power armor) he was given that shield by Sharon Carter when he started to work as a hero without a code-name during the story-arc "Enemy of the state". Don't know how she got that, but Steve was constantly moaning about the shield beeing a cheap knock-off while he used it to infiltrate Latveria, so there is that.

@@ComicDrake Maybe the translation screwed something up (because I have the German version of that story), but Sharon heavily implies in that version that this shield was Walkers from his time in force works when she gives it to Steve. Mind you, that energy shield is for some reason orange during that story (which I honestly think could also be an error made by the colourist), but overall it seems like it was Walkers originally.
Also: Said shield didn't survive Steves trip to Latveria and thus is never brought up again (because he got another bootleg one from Dr. Doom afterwards to go save Bill Clinton. Yes, seriously, and Clinton btw wields the real shield for a panel at the end)

Wyatt Russell has been pitch perfect as the MCU version of this character and I really hope the films and shows will also give him more screentime in the future to develop and explore his perspective and history.

The roster could be a Mix of the two versions of the team, with Skarr, Trickshot, Moonstone, Daken, and maybe even the current Venom to replace Mac Gargan. I’ve been reading the 2005 runaways series lately and I found something very weird. So basically when the future version of Gert goes to the past she says that it must be 2005 because Karolina is still alive. This got me thinking, so I googled Molly’s age and she is 11 years old. And the the writer of the new 2017 runaways series confirmed that Molly just turned 13 during or shortly before the first issue. Does this mean earth-616 is currently in the year 2007? I’m really confused, please help. And thanks for your awesome videos.🙏

Marvel operates on a sliding time-scale, which means events dates change relative to the current year the books are being published. So even though the book said it was 2005, as of right now it actually takes place a nebulous 2 years ago from the current date. So basically don't take years at face value in Marvel or DC comics, those dates will change as time goes on.

Walker's next appearance after was in the aforementioned S.T.A.R.S. storyline. Those 2 spots was pretty much the only times I've seen him in my comic book reading material. I ranted. Great video, Drake! One of my favorites! :)
U.S. Agent really seems to be an interesting character. We’ve seen him interact with both Steve Rogers and The Falcon, but we’ve never seen a situation where he interacts with The Falcon and The Winter Soldiers when Steve is dead. The dynamics and struggle of legacy can be really interesting in the show.
All in all, I’m really glad he’s getting his own solo series, because finally this can be a way where his continuity is consistent and they can experiment with the character, it seems Marvel has finally found out what to do with him!
Maybe since Marvel has handled how his character operates in teams horribly, he can take up more of a role like Spider-Man: Where he shows up for Events, but for the most part, he flies solo. Maybe he can be interesting in a team, but closely examining his life and thoughts seems way more interesting than having him share comic-time with 5 other heroes and not really being able to be more than just “Team leader with stereotypical personality” (But who knows, it could work, I haven’t read the comics)
All in all, great video Drake!

I dont know what to think of the character based off the summary. On the one hand "discount Captain America" could be a fun topic to explore, but on the other, all the attempts to do so sound like flops. My only potential suggestion is to bring him to an era outside of steve rodgers, then make him either the era's new captain america, or the archenemy of the era's captain america.
Either way, i can see why the character generally flopped, as "imposter syndrome" is strong. Why should the audience care about him? It doesnt matter how compelling the story within the books themselves are if the marketing front/first impressions are just "knock-off captain america".
