  • The 777 has been a great success for Boeing and is the company’s best-selling widebody to date. It was launched in 1994 and is now entering its third generation with the new 777X. Developed as a clean-sheet design in the 90s, it was designed to capitalize on the improvements in twin-engine performance. This idea is taken further as the 777X becomes the largest twin jet aircraft ever to fly. Let’s take an in-depth look at the story of the Boeing 777 in today’s video!

777 is my favorite. I’ve had a lot of experience flying 777’s. Back in my childhood, I flew a lot of flights in the 777-200ER across the pacific, either via China Southern or Asiana. I might have vaguely recalled flying in a 777-200 via United Airlines one time. I will be experiencing my first flight in a 777-300ER via Cathay Pacific in less than a month. Though my favorite of all will have to be the 777-200LR as I like the proportionality of dimensions more in the 200 family, and acknowledging the fact that it held the record of longest range aircraft in the world for a long time until the A350ULR came in. But the successor, 777-8, that might be a new favorite!

The year was 2000 and I was on my first 777 flight from IAD to CDG. What an amazing experience on takeoff when the twins spooled up. Then, following some vacation time with family in Germany, when on a 777 at CDG while taxiing out, we lined up and waited following a concorde departure. I got the chance to fly intercontinentally for the first time recently. From AMS to GRU on a 777-300ER on KLM, and back from GRU to CDG with an Air Frace A350-900. I liked the A350 much better, apart from Air France's stupid decision to put the galley all the way to the end of the plane, and not having lights to indicate on when a toilet is occupied.

What do you mean? The 777-300ER (among most others) also has a galley at the back as well as the front. And KLM also has a galley behind the Business class area on all their A330's, 777's and 787's. Even two private jet 787-8's I've been into had a galley at both the front just behind the cockpit and completely at the back. Even a 787-8 I've been into that was at that point a white tail aircraft without passenger seats, had both a galley at the front and at the back (the aircraft was later converted into a private jet). Do you mean the AF A350 did not have a middle galley? Because I've been inside a TUI 787-8 that didn't have a middle galley. It's very much up to the airline how they want their interior configured. Recently KLM removed one of the toilets from their 787-9 for example.

On a recent very long trip with multiple destinations, I traveled on Air France's 787-9, A330-200, 777-300ER, and A350-900, I found that I still preferred the 777 above them all. I surprisingly found the A350 to be somewhat clunky (especially during taxi) and uncomfortable. Much of this has to do with an airline's product, but in this case, the 777 was clearly the best and most comfortable. In a way, it is still in a class all its own. I know many folks who love everything new will sing the praises of the A350. I also know that when it comes to comfort, there are lots of factors at play, even within a fleet, seat location, etc... but all said my experience put the 777 as the clear leader with the 787 a close second.

Boeing's reliability in stretching existing models has been stigmatized by the flying passengers of its doubtfulness of a safe aircraft - and with the over-stretched timing to have the X variant in the air, concerns can arise about the safety and airworthiness of this particular plane. Overloading and increasing the capacity of passengers aboard a plane, might not always be a solution for the hub&spoke model, which is being abandoned.

I would expect some rather awkward meetings if it gets delayed again.
Especially when you consider that the delays alone for the upgrade have taken than it took for the initial clean sheet design.
I am not going into the arguments over which company's planes are better. After all, many ways, it is rather subjective and/or dependant on the routes you plan to operate them on.
However, going on recent performance, Airbus has been far more successful than Boeing with their development schedules, something which isn't going unnoticed by the airlines.
As such, it may be yet another disastrous Boeing business decision to wait to see what Airbus does before committing themselves to further variants.
If it can be justified, they should go for it so as not to find themselves with a competitor the Airlines trust to be ready before the Boeing.
On the other hand, if they announced it before they had made significant progress on the new variant, again, based on recent performance, Airbus might still have their variant to market first.
Yes, Airbus has issues. It is just that at the moment, they seem to be more proficient at dealing with them.

I think you're getting your facts mixed up. When it comes to developing widebody aircraft, it's Airbus who usually waits to see what Boeing is doing, then reacts. This goes back as far as anyone can remember.
Credit goes to Airbus for their accomplishments in the narrowbody sector, but when it comes to widebody aircraft, Boeing rules the roost, and that's not going to change anytime soon.
Airbus is too busy honoring their commitments to deliver the huge narrowbody orders they have for them to dedicate any massive funds to develop a new aircraft that would match the 777-9. Even if they decide to join the race now, they won't have an aircraft ready for at least 5 years, and by then it will be too late. Boeing will likely be in the process of delivering another new game changing aircraft.

    • @neilpickup237
      @neilpickup237 9 месяцев назад

@sainnt I was not getting my facts mixed up about who historically followed who, for the simple reason that I didn't mention it!
My comment was about how quickly they can get a model into production and the confidence around how close the projected timescales and actual timescales will be.
However, so far as getting facts mixed up, I think that you will find that the A300 was the very first twin-engined wide-body, and it was approaching a decade ahead of the 767. This would rather blow your suggestion out of the water.

    • @sainnt
      @sainnt 9 месяцев назад

@@neilpickup237 Yes, that's an Airbus fan's claim to fame. However in 35 years of production, they only managed to sell 561. I'd agree that the 767 was a derivative, but the 757 wasn't. That aircraft gave birth to the A321.
It took Boeing 3 years to develop the 747, an all new aircraft.
Airbus takes less time to develop an aircraft because their aircraft are all derivatives of existing technology. In fact, the A300 and A380 were their only original concepts, and the A380 was a technological success, but not a commercial one. When your designs are based on existing concepts, you don't need as much time for development.
Now, I'll say that we can certainly blame the Max for how long it's taking aircraft to be certified nowadays, but it's a good thing for the general public.
We're not going to see an original aircraft from Airbus until the next decade, and even then, with talks about upward folding wingtips, it's going to end up being another derivative.

    • @neilpickup237
      @neilpickup237 9 месяцев назад

@sainnt You can't keep chopping and changing or adding arguments that have nothing to do with an original comment in an attempt to justify your stance.
You seem to have totally lost sight that the video and my comment related to the 777.
One minute, you are incorrectly arguing about wide‐bodies, before effectively saying that 500+ sales do not count, and then introduce the 757, which isn't even a widebody.
You then compare the sales of the 767 with the Airbus without acknowledging that Airbus at that time was only a small player and that compared to their size, the sales, while not in Boeing's league were truly amazing.
You talk about the 757 giving birth to the A321, but wasn't it just a larger A320 aimed at a different market? Hardly a competitor for the 757, which was designed with challenging routes in mind, something still not fully matched (although arguably more to do with a lack of suitable engines, than design shortcomings of current aircraft)
However, if you do think that it was, it certainly saw off the 757, which was unable to sell enough units to remain in production while the A321 has thrived.
Then you talk about folding wingtips as if they are something new. Yes, in their application, but we have had folding wings, a far more challenging technology for ages.
However, if you compare sales of the 767 with those of the A330, which has much in common with the A300/310, it doesn't fair quite so well. As I said, it all depends on what you choose to compare with what.
Just because someone says something negative about Boeing, it doesn't make them an Airbus fanboy or a Boeing hater. Any reasonable review will conclude in favour of different manufacturers' models depending upon category and use.
Talking Widebody. Regardless of how the statistics are selected, it is hard to deny that the 747, 767, and the 777 in all but their latest versions were great and profitable aircraft. Yet, while fantastic, the 787 still hasn't covered its development costs, and there is still the possibility that it may never do so. As such, it could even qualify as a financial failure. As for the 777x, on current projections, it may like the 747-8 fail on the profit front, too. However, I hope that is not the case.

@@neilpickup237 Nothing is being chopped. You left your objectivity behind and turned the debate to Boeing vs Airbus, so let's do that and not pretend.
You'd made a comment about it being a disastrous decision for Boeing to see what Airbus does next before coming up with another variant. I argued that it's actually the other way around, then you said you never said that. Okay.
Your points are valid about the 757, but the only reason why the A321 is selling, is precisely because there's no 757 replacement. Boeing has made the decision to build something all new, and ultimately, that's the wisest decision.
Now, the 787 did cost a massive amount to develop, but the A350 is a direct beneficiary of that investment. Agree or disagree, doesn't matter, but the fact is, when airlines saw the 787, the A330neo simply wasn't going to cut it so Airbus had to rush to the drawing board and build a copycat. Sure, the 787 isn't nearly as profitable as the A350, but Airbus didn't have to invest as much once the technology was public. Based on orders though, once all aircraft has been delivered, the 787 will be profitable. Can't say the same about the A380, which is really the last aircraft that Airbus designed from scratch.
And calling a planemaker that's backed by the economies of France, Britain, Germany and Belgium, just to name the top investors, a small player is laughable. The planemaker wasn't established with small ambitions, and are now only second to Boeing after Lockheed and McDonnell Douglas are no more.
The reason why the A330ceo has outsold the 767 is because Boeing split the roles of the aircraft with the 757, which didn't have to be a widebody, much like Airbus split the roles of the A330 and A340, but put 4 engines on the latter.. It should also be noted that the 767 was more in the same class as the A310, not the A330 which is a significantly larger aircraft. Only the 767-400 is comparable.
The A340 was built to compete with the 777, and we know how that turned out.
All credit goes to Airbus for what they've been able to accomplish in such a relatively short amount of time, but it doesn't hurt to have another player to 'borrow' ideas from. The Japanese were able to do the same in the auto industry.

I don't understand the people saying that the 777 is a comfortable plane, I recently flew Emirates from FRA to HKG with a stopover in DXB. FRA to DXB using a 777-300ER in a 10 abreast configuration it was cramped, noisy and shaking (Not turbulance). While from DXB to HKG I flew on a A380-800, also a 10 abreast configuration, but it was comfortable, silent and generally felt incredibly roomy.
For anyone thinking that I am buyest, I am not.
Before the Pandemic, I flew on a Finnair A350-900 it was also quiet and very roomy, 9 abreast don't know about the 10 abreast. And also on the Virgin Atlantic B787-9, It was silent but also really cramped and the windows we're locked by the crew.

It is a comfortable plane, because the 777 and the 787 will remain be flown with 2 pilots in the cockpit.
I will not be uncomfortable if my airbus flight is controlled by a single pilot in cruising altitude.
If Airbus is beating Boeing’s ass on everything then Airbus is also beating pilots’ ass adopting single pilot operations.

Airbus is adopting single pilot operation on the A350 to increase profits of airlines, no way will never fly an airbus with one pilot on the cockpit.
