Probably the most unique drummer I've heard, yet he _never_ loses the groove. Every song, he's trying to be original. He never does what a _proper_ rock drummer would do. He's a big reason why the Police were gods of the punk/new-wave era.
The Police--such an amazing combination of rock, reggae, and pop. Disbanded when ranked the #1 band in the world at the time. Nothing like going out on top.
Very mellow, very moving, very appropriate for me today .. I lost my wife yesterday .. this song just expresses my current mind set. Jamal, thank you so much for sharing your reaction to this song .. listening to your comments helped me stay in a better place.
Sting said in magazine: "I conjured up symbols of pain and related them to my soul. A black spot on the sun struck me as being a very painful image." He recalled the specific incident and how future wife Trudie Styler inspired the song's title in : 'I was sitting moping under a tree in the garden, and as the sun was sinking toward the western horizon, I noticed that there was a lot of sunspot activity. I turned to Trudie. 'There's a little black spot on the sun today.' She waited expectantly, not really indulging my mood but tolerant. 'That's my soul up there,' I added gratuitously. Trudie discreetly raised her eyes to the heavens. 'There he goes again, the king of pain.'"
Totally agree one of their masterpiece. But not the music video cuz it's cheesy af. Actually maybe I'm more into Synchronicity I, faster and more straight forward with that obsessional rythmic synth stuff. Anyway two great songs.
@Cosi I love that video! Post apocalyptic thing going on. I was 12 or 13 years old when that video came out so to me they just looked cool. I still think that at 49.
Sting said he had recently separated from his first wife and was not getting along with the other two members of the band. Instead of repressing or deflecting the hurt crowning himself the "King Of Pain." "I conjured up symbols of pain and related them to my soul. A black spot on the sun struck me as being a very painful image."
The comment was made by his girlfriend at the time, watching him wallow in his self-pity: "There he goes again, the king of pain." A wonderfully British sense of snark.
The lyrics are mostly a series of vignettes of moments of intense suffering and a lament about how he’s cursed to hyper-empathizes with them, so I could certainly see that.
I'm truly moved by the out pouring of sympathy for our friend who lost his spouse. Jamel your channel has been a blessing to me and to so many people. The music and your reactions give us a sense of belonging and comfort in these trying times. Love this channel. Thanks again Jamel!
So it’s Saturday morning and not feeling well…but now my tears have washed away the pain and elevated my spirits…I forgot how good the Police was even though I had all their early albums and loved them…newborn…Thanks Jamal for showing me the crack of light through the forest
I listened to a Columbus, Ohio station in the mornings way back then and they had a parody of this song. I miss and loved it because it was made about an older sportscaster. He wore plaid jackets. The parody was, "The King of Plaid". Jimmy Crumb was the sportscaster. I am sure jimmy is in the next world now because he was older back then. I have a soft place in my heart and an appreciation for this song, the parody and also for Jimmy :)
One of my favorite Police songs!!! Sting.my man!!! What a great 3 piece band!!! Definitely underrated!!!😀👍👊🎧🎶🎤🎸🥁. I know this threw my trials and tribulations in life!!! ☝️☝️☝️ what a trifecta!!! Andy Summers, Steward Copeland... and Sting!!!
Love the Police. I remember when I first heard them in the late 70s. They were different in an awesome sort of way. Have you done " Walking on the Moon"?
Lyrically stellar, hauntingly beautiful, one of my two top Police songs, along with Invisible Sun. Artistically unparalleled, THE supergroup of the 1980's.
They did the perfect amount of albums. If they kept pumping them out into the 90's I don't know if they have the same popularity. They didn't release a bad album, not too many bands can say that.
All classically trained and so huge in the 80's. His voice is so magical and always loved their musical diversity. Check out Synchronicity for the hardest stuff
The song is open to interpretation but I think it's about feeling the pain and loneliness of the world and the curse of that level of empathy. Again, it's open to interpretation.
I think it's more of the opposite, where it's a man who sees all of this negative stuff but feels nothing himself, maybe even actually relishing in it.
He explained what the song was written about, but the listener can project whatever they want. He was into psychology, reading up on mental workings, and symbolism, but he also went through a painful divorce, so he attached himself to a bunch of painful symbols in poetic form. In an interview around the album's release, he also talked about his father and a painful childhood.
this is my FAVORITE song by The Police. I mentioned in one of your other police reaction videos that I was obsessed with them growing up I was in my tween and teen years when the police were out because I was born in 1970 I had their posters all over my room they were a big deal to me as they were to millions of others! Every song they have done is freaking unbelievable, but this is my absolute favorite
Sting has always been the voice of the more educated listener. During the time of this recording he was relating to the large group of college students who were and are asking age old questions.
The Police are awesome! So glad I grew up with their music. They had a unique sound quality. Sting's voice just made it 100x better!!!! So grateful to watch him perform live in the 90s!
I was blessed to hear them live in concert when they did their reunion tour. It was in an outdoor stadium during a summer night - was amazing - they are amazing. Seeing Sting live is also a gift to the soul I will never forget.
Another great solo song from Sting that is in a similar vein - “I’m So Happy That I Can’t Stop Crying”.... heck, that whole album (Mercury Falling) is phenomenal.
I had this album on tape when it came out and played it so much all the letters wore off the cassette. It's still one of my favorite albums of all time.
I interpret it to be about that feeling like no one can feel as much pain as I'm feeling, like I've got the market cornered on pain. And I hear him saying it is his destiny to be the king of pain.
I used to listen to this when I was younger in a small bar after I got done work. I just needed to wind down and this just seemed to hit the spot for some reason. I just love the Police. You brought back so many memories. They also did the song "Walking On The Moon" is just classic.
For someone with the wide, eclectic knowledge of popular music that you possess, your humility is truly inspiring! You're not afraid to admit what you don't know, and not shy about asking others for their perspective and insight. Watching these videos with you is like going on a journey of discovery with a good buddy! I may be old enough to be your Grandfather, but I would be proud to be your friend! I have seen The Police as they reunited for "final" tour back in 2008. Stop was at an amphitheater in West Palm Beach. It was May 17, 2008. I have original ticket. 3 and 1/2 hours of music, The Police rocked!
The key to the song is “I’m always hoping you will end this reign”. Declaring that it doesn’t have to be this way that there is this much suffering in the world. For a while, he did sing the lyric as “I always hoped that you would end this reign”. As if saying, but we know it’ll never change.
I absolutely love you're channel and really enjoy watching how u react to old school, real music..❤ I grew up in the 80's and we were extremely lucky to have great artists, no lip syncing and they played their own instruments.. my parent's got me into 70's disco and rock from 60's and 70's..U ALWAYS bring a smile to my face and I'm happy that u are listening to great music by great artist! 💜
Jamel, I just realized that you haven't done Soundgarden Black Hole Sun! It is THE grunge song of the 90s. All the major players from Seattle at that time consider this the best song of that genre. Here's the link for your reaction: ruclips.net/video/3mbBbFH9fAg/видео.html

The trilogy of his 1st marriage break up - this, Every Breath You Take, and Wrapped around your finger (do that next please! Great video) - all from the Synchronicity album- these are my favorite Sting/Police song.
I could listen to Stewart Copeland's drumming all day.

One of my favorites by them! The guitar during the choruses is mindblowing
Now that you've done "King of Pain," now would be a great opportunity to bounce back to Weird Al Yankovic and do "King of Suede." xD
Guessing you didn't actually watch this reaction before commenting. He stated quite clearly that "Weird Al" was next, both at the beginning of the reaction and at the end.
That's like the first thing he said. Watch the video before you comment something stupid
King of Pain.... being able to empathize with the suffering of other living beings. I think that's what this song is about.
J, do “can’t stand losing” by The Police! You’ll love it!
Everything I love about the Police distilled into one timeless classic track.
Great song , please listen to Pink Floyd sorrow pulse
Great track, from a great album (yeah, I'm that old, I call them albums)
The trilogy of his 1st marriage break up - this, Every Breath You Take, and Wrapped around your finger (do that next please! Great video) - all from the Synchronicity album- these are my favorite Sting/Police song.
Please react to Wrapped Around Your Finger. You like 'haunting' melodies. You'll dig this one.
Do ring around your finger next big doggggg
