Paul McCartney was asked a long time ago had the Beatles stayed together through the 70's what band they would sound like, and his immediate answer was always the legendary Electric Light Orchestra. Jeff Lynne has many ties to the members of the Beatles.
@staircase2 Actually had the closest relationship with George, being part of the Traveling Wilburys, and produced music with both Paul and Ringo at separate times. I've read his friendship was strong with all of them.
I haven't seen you do any of the Steve Miller Band... Jet Airliner, Fly Like an Eagle, Swingtown, The Joker, Rockin' Me, Jungle Love, Take the Money and Run, Dance, Dance, Dance and/or Abracadabra. Great music by a great band.

So many great hits with ELO, Traveling Wilburys, even worked with the Beatles. Livin’ Thing, Sweet Talking Woman are a must, Jamel. Please get to Billy Joel at some point
Here's the story of the "Bruce Lyric line. Don’t Bring Me Down” for the Electric Light Orchestra’s 1979 album, Discovery, Jeff Lynne discovered that he had unwittingly caused confusion with one of the song’s throwaway lyrics. As he explained on the VH1 series Storytellers: “You know that little daft bit in there that goes [unintelligible]. I just made it up in the studio. It was actually ‘groose,’ which happens to mean something. The engineer was German and he said ‘How did you know that word?’ And I said: ‘What word?’ And he said ‘Groose… it means greetings in German.’ I said: “That’s good… I’ll leave it in.” He continues: “We started going on tour and every time we played it everyone used to sing ‘Bruce,’ so I said ‘Ah, f*ck it, I’ll sing Bruce as well’!
I get such a kick out of the joy you feel at discovering the music I grew up on---if it can be reliably determined that I ever really grew up, that is!
I'm ashamed to admit, because the movie is really terrible (but it holds a place in my heart), but I was first introduced to ELO through the movie Xanadu.
I remember when I was first exposed to ELO. I did not see any way in hell that a legit rock n roll band could incorporate violins and cellos. Then I listened to "A New World Record" and was blown away. Then I saw them live... and was sold forever! Respect to Jeff Lynne for his musical genius and willingness to think outside the box.
Jeff Lynne has explained that he is singing a made-up word, "Grooss", which some have suggested sounds like the German expression "Gruß," meaning "greeting." Lynne has explained that originally he did not realize the meaning of the syllable, and he just used it as a temporary placekeeper to fill a gap in the lyrics, but upon learning the German meaning he decided to leave it in. After the song's release, so many people had misinterpreted the word as "Bruce" that Lynne actually began to sing the word as "Bruce" for fun at live shows. ELO engineer Reinhold Mack remembers the term differently, stating that Lynne was actually singing "Bruce" as a joke in advance of an Australian tour "referring to how many Australian guys are called Bruce
Correct. It was also the first ELO song not to have strings. Jeff came back into the studio to record what he thought was a needed album banger well after the group and contracted orchestra were long gone.
Which is why Jeff Lynne played guitar at George Harrison’s tribute. That legendary performance when Prince threw his guitar up in the air at the end and it didn’t come down. Probably because of the FIRE he left after that solo...
I saw ELO in the’80’s opening for Journey in Norman Oklahoma. They busted out the speakers on the first song. Broke my heart. But Journey was amazing. Just wish I’d gotten a good show with ELO. Good band 🥰👍
Jeff Lynne another example of pure musical genius. Not only his work with ELO and his recent tour, Jeff Lynne's ELO, His contribution in helping form the "Travelling Wilburys" group with George Harrison , Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty . Not to mention his work as one of the best record producers in the music business. Incredible .
Such a unique band, ELO. Jeff Lynne was a huge Beatles fan and also loved classical music so he and a couple of buddies decided to form a band which combined Beatles pop with orchestral arrangements. One of the most distinctive sounds in Rock music history.
@@gavdog12 Orbison had probably one of the best tenor voices I've ever heard. Hearing him in End Of The Line and seeing how they paid respect to him in the video always got to me

Agreed! My favorite ELO song.... it's the song that got me into ELO. The first time I heard it I thought it was a new John Lennon record, that's what made me search it out. Then I was like..."That's the band from Xanadu??!!"
Jeff Lynne's Electric Light Orchestra from The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame site: "Picking up where the Beatles left off, ELO expanded the concept of great melodies, epic song structures and grand orchestrations. ELO added an exciting mix of elements into rock and roll, including disco rhythms and electronic studio wizardry. Imagine a marriage of tuneful, rocking pop songs with instruments from the symphonic realm, and you’ve got the blueprint for what made ELO one of the most popular groups of the 1970s and beyond. Jeff Lynne, ELO’s vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, co-founder, and frontman, conceived of a rarefied musical sphere in which cellos coexisted with guitars, and where classically tinged progressive rock intersected with hook-filled, radio-friendly pop. The result: ELO’s boundary-breaking approach to rock that resonated with a global audience, both as a pop singles act and as album-oriented rockers with deep-track appeal".
Listen to Eldorado Overture/Can’t Get It Out Of My Head. Some of their earlier 70’s material is more prog. This is off their album Discovery which came out in 1979. Todd Dawson oh cool. Rush is my number #1 favorite band. Actually listening to The Trees right now as I’m writing this comment. Unfortunately I always wanted too but I never could. In terms of musicianship and skill Rush is sometimes unbeatable. I want to get the 40th anniversary. I also want to get the A Farewell To King’s, one. It’s just hard with Coronavirus. Stay safe and be careful. This guy ranked Rush albums, and he put Hemispheres in the bottom part of his list because it’s has only 4 songs on it. I’ve been trying to pinpoint what it is about reaction videos, certain ones in particular that people watch over and over. Subscribe to, check every day, etc. At first I thought it was just the reactors really loving a song and being moved by the same things I like. But now, I’ve followed different reactors and kind of stuck on your channel because you like the music I like, and it’s nice to see someone else like the same things. It makes us feel part of something bigger. That’s a small portion of why going to concerts is such a church-like experience for me. Validation is a nice part of watching reaction videos, but it’s much more than that. I think in our busy lives we are not as connected to other people as we used to be. We don’t have the time anymore to just sit and chat with people and listen to music together and talk about it. I used to do that when I was younger. “Did you hear that line said about...” and “Yeah, but did you notice that guitar riff?!” “Last year when I listened to that I was going through a breakup...” “I used to sing this in my room after an argument with my parents/boss”, etc. We used to just sit and enjoy things and contemplate together and songs were an avenue to open up about those things that we normally wouldn’t have just brought up in conversation. I think a lot of us have lost that because of our busy work/parenting schedules, and YOU, Jamel, helped bring it back. You are very real and personable. Do you know how many times I’ve almost talked at my screen at you? It’s like you’re here in my living room. Anyway, sorry this is so long. I needed to type it out and maybe some others have noticed the same thing. ✌🏼
Noticed indeed! So much of this rings true for me! I, myself would listen to our only 2 pop/rock stations in Medford, Oregon while building tree forts, and model railroads/slot cars. I got a bit older and, YES, the skating rink, then dance club. E.L.O. Somehow fit into every part of that, as did so many of the songs you react to Jamel. I think you are a one in a million and love your show. I thank you. And thank you “Crannbeathadh”, you hit the nail on the head!
Everything you say! Remember the thrill of saving up to buy a new album, rushing home with it to listen to it with your best friend, in wonder because only a couple of tracks would have been played on the radio, then dissecting all the lyrics ....... So much time, then.
Yes, and I also remember buying a new tape and driving around in my pos car with my friends and singing loudly. I still do that by myself on my commute, but it’s not the same. I want to share those feelings about heartfelt lyrics and their relevance to my experiences with others. I can’t wait to go to concerts again.
I really love this reaction. This one reminds me of my dad who passed away last year. He used to crank this song on his cassette player in his Scout when we lived in Ft. Leonard wood in the late 70s. It's probably also the first song I ever remember as I was 2 at the time.
Awesome reaction on a great song. Thank You! Interesting to note that this band which was known for their string section, included no string section in this song. And to preempt the people calling out the guitars, guitars are not string section. The string section is composed of bowed instruments belonging to the violin family. It normally consists of first and second violins, violas, cellos, and double basses.
I love ELO, thank you. This song is on the movie 'Paul' (about that alien who ran into those 2 English guys (upon their return from my San Diego Comic Con)
Back in the '70s + '80s this song was always played at the funfairs in the UK. All the air pressure sound effects really pumped up the experience on the rides, with all the hydraulics moving you all around the ride.
I remember being at my first roller skating party in the fifth grade, skating to this song with my first girlfriend. You can never capture that feeling as an adult. So nice.
I went to Palo Alto to work from Denver for two weeks. Before and after Labor Day 1979. This song was on constantly. 1970 Labor Day it was Mungo Jerry, In the Summer Time. Nice to go back, away from odd even gas rationing.
Love this. I used to roller skate to this at the skating rink. I think they were very much ahead of their time and under rated. Very talented band. Love them.
I think you should react to „My Sweet Lord - George Harrison“ (one of the Beatles and close friend of ELO‘s Jeff Lynne, the singer) trust me you will love it! Bug of course after you‘ve done all ELO songs;)
The version of My guitar gently weeps that has Prince, Tom Petty, Dhani Harrison...has Jeff Lynne ( ELO lead singer)singing like an angel. I love all music...his voice is possibly my favorite ever though. Also Travelling Wilburys consists of Jeff Lynne , Tom Petty ,George Harrison ,Roy Orbison & Bob Dylan which = AMAZING. Ohhhh how I miss skating to ELO and so many 70's bands. Great reactions !!
ELO has always been among the upper echelons of the most amazing rock-n-rollers on the planet. In this song - I can't say for sure but I always believed em to be saying Groose, rather than Bruce. As in just making a sound rather than a name. Back in the day when I first heard them - I was totally blown away! I'm glad you picked this one to react to
My father and I dug out his old record player last year and he had an LP of Face the Music in his old collection. Absolutely great album. Definitely second Fire On High
One of the first rock I EVER listened too. It is gigantic fun song. You can still dance to it today. ELO made videos for all the songs on the Discovery album, remember one night catching it purely by accident. The UFO at 5:30ish, the cover of Discovery.

So, the year was 1968, the place was Fillmore West auditorium San Francisco. Everyone was seated on the floor, "warm smell of colitas rising up through the air" (quote from Hotel California), very chill scene. We were there for Janis Joplin like always. When ELO , who we'd never heard of, was introduced, out they came in.....tuxedos!!
E.L.O. stands for "Electric Light Orchestra", which is the name of the band. They were so well-known that everyone just knew them by their initials! 😁 It is a pleasure watching you get acquainted with them. 💜
@GreatNorthWeb Love it! It really tickled me when they used it in "Fargo" (the series). I think it was the 1st episode of the 2nd season. Great & unexpected taste in the music they've used on that show.💙 💙

Jeff Lynne has looked exactly the same for over 40 years. Thankfully he's also sounded the same. ELO - all killer, no filler!

I still do that by myself
on my commute, but it’s not the same. I want to share those feelings about heartfelt lyrics and their relevance to my experiences with others. I can’t wait to go to concerts again.
Well said
I totally agree . great reaction channel. I watch it all the time.
E L O was a great part of my Childhood/Teens....i still love theyr music.
This song has just got to be in the next Guardians of the Galaxy! 😄
After "Mr. Blue Sky", it's only logical. 😃
ELO's Rock n' Roll is king... and don't forget the wear your rollerskates
Last Train to London is another great ELO song.
I've liked this song ever since I first heard it in 1979. But this is the first time I've seen this video, or that I've even seen ELO performing.
Now we're talkin...This is ELO!!!!!!
Love how much you are diggin' ELO! So fun to see your enjoyment! 💕
Dude, your a Giants fan, a Star Wars fan, and a music lover!
My man.
I remember being at my first roller skating party in the fifth grade, skating to this song with my first girlfriend. You can never capture that feeling as an adult. So nice.
You know he likes it when the shoulders start bouncing.
This song came out my freshman year in college! Lots of partying with ELO!
I love how much attention you're bringing to ELO they don't get near the credit they deserve!
I went to Palo Alto to work from Denver for two weeks. Before and after Labor Day 1979. This song was on constantly. 1970 Labor Day it was Mungo Jerry, In the Summer Time. Nice to go back, away from odd even gas rationing.
I remember this at the skating rink back in the day, got everyone going!
This was a given at the skating rink! 😂
I was thinking the same! I miss those days.
Love that song. 😍
At one point in my life I couldn't get enough of E.L.O. they have a few greats
ELO has always been among the upper echelons of the most amazing rock-n-rollers on the planet. In this song - I can't say for sure but I always believed em to be saying Groose, rather than Bruce. As in just making a sound rather than a name. Back in the day when I first heard them - I was totally blown away! I'm glad you picked this one to react to
Another suggestion for Turn To Stone, or even Fire On High. The latter is an instrumental, but features backward talking at the beginning.
Fire on High is one my favs...the local carnvial used it in one of their rides. Childhood memories!
FIRE ON HIGH!!!!!!!
YAAASSS!! FIRE ON HIGH!
My father and I dug out his old record player last year and he had an LP of Face the Music in his old collection. Absolutely great album. Definitely second Fire On High
Love this song. It was the theme song for ABC Wide World of Sports that used to be on. My daughter also did a gymnastics routine to this song.
One of the first rock I EVER listened too. It is gigantic fun song. You can still dance to it today.
ELO made videos for all the songs on the Discovery album, remember one night catching it purely by accident. The UFO at 5:30ish, the cover of Discovery.
Dude, check out some more Hall and Oates. Both “Rich Girl” and “Maneater” are well worth a listen.
One on one, too.
sara
I loved Daryl’s House. Miss that show.
@@brendalarrabee7361 he'd already done reaction of "Sara Smile"
He should also check out these other Hall & Oates songs:
Private Eyes
Method Of Modern Love
Say It Isn't So
She's Gone
Rich Girl
Kiss On My List
Out Of Touch
I Can't Go For That
So, the year was 1968, the place was Fillmore West auditorium San Francisco.
ELO will FOREVER BE one of the legendary rock bands!
Love the ELO run, they're one of my favorite groups
ELO- another highly under rated band. Excellent Musicians.
hearing this makes me want to spin Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe
I sing "Children of the Corn" lol. Simple pleasures.
@GreatNorthWeb
Love it! It really tickled me when they used it in "Fargo" (the series). I think it was the 1st episode of the 2nd season. Great & unexpected taste in the music they've used on that show.💙
💙
It also makes me want to hear My Sharona and go cruising! haha...
@@TJ-id6ee
Exactly what my best friend & I used to do back in the day, singing along at the top of our lungs! She's gone now, way too young. But music like that can bring back such happy memories.💙
Oh man! Children of the Sun! I haven't thought of that in decades. For a time I wore that out in high school. Thanks, Web.
ELO's "Living Thing" is one of my favs. and is in the movie "Boogie Nights"
My first record. I was 7 when this came out. This is from the album “Discovery” which has been referred to as “Disco-Very” because of its disco influence. Great song and reaction!
I was 19 in 1979 ,,,, LOOOOOOOVE THEM 70s
my first album to buy was ELO "Out of the Blue" when i was 7 or 8. ah, the 70s
I love this song since I was a very young, one of my fav songs. And Shine a Little Love. Too.
ELO - "Hold om Tight" should be reviewed.
I always listen to this song when I'm down,it lift's my mood every time!
I agree, then Rock- n - Roll is King
Four little diamonds, turn to stone, living thing , showdown..some of my favorite ELO
The best way to listen to the song "Don't Bring Me Down" is through an ald style four channel stereo. The mix is incredible!
I was 7 in 1979 when I first heard this in my dad's car. Loved it, such good memories. Glad your enjoying it
MY BUDDY 'DANNY 'USE TO SING THIS TO OUR FRIEND 'BRUCE' WHEN IT CAME OUT!😂GOOD TIMES!🤗
RIP MY 'BROTHER'S'✌❤🤘
Electric Light Orchestra was ALWAYS playing loudly in our home when I first got married....like back in '75. I haven't heard them for years!
Thank you for bringing them back to my memory, Jamal..❤ 🌟💫💛
