      The MPAA will generally only allow 1 f-bomb in a PG-13 movie or else it's changed to R. But I will add they are not always consistent with this rule (e.g. Finding Forrester had 2). There's a great documentary called "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" that talks more about this hypocrisy, especially the MPAA's hypersensitivity to sex over violence.

    The whole point of the novel was the kid dying first. Then the choice comes down to one or the other choosing to sacrifice themselves, because there was no point to either living once their child was gone. It's a pretty strong message.
    M. Night Shyamalan decided "kidz r da future" and here we are.

    • @Essence_of_Flowers

      This is probably why there's a random scene of the kid fleeing the cabin. I would not be surprised if the original ending was supposed to be faithful to the books and it would had made a more interesting story. Instead we get a cookie cutter ending where any mystery is removed.

      @@petrblatny2472 i mean, it's not that it's not the same as the original, the problem lies with the fact that it kinda refuses to engage with any of the themes (very simple themes at that) in the original narrative. I mean Shyamalan could have a completely different interpretation from the original story, in a different setting, with different characters, or even exploring different aspects of the same setting, and it wouldnt really be an issue as long as he had at least added something to the themes of the original story, or even if he said something on top of it.
      Idk from my perspective he just pranced around it for the duration of the movie

  • @CERTAIND00M
    @CERTAIND00M Год назад +1069

    This is based on a book by a guy who is known for writing weird, vaguely horrifying short stories.
    One of my favorites is about this man who arrives at the local public pool to pick up his kids from swim practice and this woman starts talking to him while he's waiting and acting like she is his wife. She's attractive though and kind of flirty, so the guy plays along at first but then she calls for the guy's kids by name and they come running over and the man wants to tell the kids to stop, to run away, but he can't. The only thing he is still in control of is his mind. Something else is now moving his body, which follows the woman to a minivan parked in the lot. He and the kids get in and the guy glances at their reflections in the rearview mirror and he can tell by their horrified expressions that something is now controlling their bodies as well. And then the woman drives off with them.
    ...And that's it. That's the whole story. I was worried that his stuff wouldn't adapt well for this exact reason. Maybe as a book, KatC could've been compelling. But with M. Night's terminally awkward directing style, it didn't stand a chance.

    Others have said, but the ending of this movie is particularly weird and gives some (probably unintentional) mixed messages, especially as a gay person lol
    SPOILERS for the movie and the book (The Cabin at the End of the World)
    So in the book, the daughter is the one who dies after accidentally being shot, but this does not stop the "apocalypse". If I recall correctly, the book is much more ambiguous about whether the apocalypse is actually real or not, and the main couple decide to stick together, rather than seemingly following the will of a god who does not see the death of their daughter as enough of a sacrifice. In the book, Leonard (Batista's character) goes as far to say that the daughter's death "doesn't count" because the sacrifice wasn't a willing one, which throws in another interesting layer of ambiguity to the situation.(Forgive me, it has been a bit since I read the book).
    The movie, however, changes it by having one of the dads realizing that he needs to be sacrificed and they were chosen because their love was pure...or something like that. And the movie seems to imply that the apocalypse was real, which means that in this movie, whatever god caused the apocalypse was singling out a happy gay couple, forcing them to kill one another to save the world...and ended up being right. Like, I'm not sure if he was going for a "gay people are too good for this sinful earth" kind of moral or something, but he changed the ending of the book in order to have one of your gay leads kill the other for a "greater good" which just feels...weird.

    • @guibeck8259
      @guibeck8259 Год назад +11

      You're wrong. Second gay person here, the point of having Andrew kill Eric is that Andrew grew resentful of his oppression and legitimately doesn't care a single bit about the outside world who attacked him. Throughout the movie Andrew is painted as a vengeful hurt asshole who hates the outside world and views everyone as a potential homophobe/threat to him and his husband. Eric on the other way has a ton of religious feelings, shown when Andrew said he could pray at the orphanage (while Andrew hid his homosexuality from the staff by saying Eric is his wife's brother). Leonard was right, God chose them because their love is pure, but it's a matter of how worthwhile humans are (so God gave the right of forgiveness to a person who has dealt with the worst humanity can offer), and it comes down to Andrew. This movie would be so much more complicated if these characters weren't gay, as you'd have to set up a bitter cynical protagonist instead of just pulling the homophobia card
      By killing Eric, Andrew forgives the outside world, literally, and I assume let's go of his fear and resentment.

    The "violence" part of the rating was because while they didn't directly show the violence, they showed the blood and aftermath of it. Like with Redmond, they didn't show him getting his head bashed in. But they showed his covered corpse and the blood. Or when Leonard slit his throat. While it didn't show him do it, it showed the blood flowing from his neck, down his shirt.
    Blood is a huge factor with the MPA. Show blood, you're going to get an R rating from one hit with a weapon. No blood, Show as much violence as you want. Show people getting shot, stabbed, maimed, or killed. It doesn't matter. You'll still get a PG-13.
    The "language" part is because they say "fuck" about 20 time, because God forbid anyone under the age of 17 hears that word more than once in a movie.

    Hey Adum, thanks for putting in the effort to make a longer review for this one. I enjoyed it, sad to see you didn't as much. My biggest issue is how they represent homosexual relationships. At the beginning, the child makes a comment about how her guidance counselor says that, "It's so great that you have two dads," which she takes issue with. In my mind, this seems to take issue with how Hollywood seems to be romanticizing being gay. Then, for the rest of the movie, the fact that the couple is gay isn't treated as a normal thing, but a thing to constantly use as reasoning or say, "Yeah dude, I'm totally not homophobic - that's definitely not why we're here." From the trailer, I was really hoping to see actual gay representation that wasn't pointed at and mentioned endlessly. I want them to just be a gay couple and have nobody comment about it because it's just NORMAL. They're not unicorns, they're gay.

      I agree in general- my take on the “it’s so great you have two dads” thing seeming like the opposite to her, I imagined it was like her counselor couldn’t get over it was like obligated to try to not sound homophobic because of her job. Like “oh, it’s so great that you have two dads and still manage to seem so happy” kind of stuff. Everything else you said was my take too- but at the beginning of the movie, my takeaway was more of the kid recognizing “subtle” homophobia.

    Also being gay, I was so excited for a gay horror but I just wanted to cry towards the end because I was so tired

    7:56 with the no deaths in the ICU thing i would imagine is there because of revelations 9:6 which says something like “and in that time men will wish to flee through death but find no escape.” It’s just meant to force the people who didn’t get raptured to suffer more

    One small correction about your point at the end 9:10. One of the gay boys tells the other to “be ready for when he nods his head” implying that they did have a plan. Now with that being said you never see him give that signal, unless I missed that.

    The no deaths in the ICU is a reference to the apocalypse as described in the book of Revelations. I forget the exact wording, but a common Christian interpretation is that people will stop dying once the apocalypse starts.

    Hey Adum will you be reviewing women talking? I saw it today in theaters and really enjoyed it/cried. I think you would really like it because it's dark and depressing but has a lot of hidden meaning.

    I thought it was a decent low budget psychological horror movie that was a lot more cohesive than Old, and Bautista got to act again which I usually enjoy.

    I read the book and at least from the books perspective, the two fathers did not "sacrifice" the daughter, rather she died by accident/and or by someone elses hand rather than her parent's. The book was quite good, its a shame the movie didn't turn out so well.

    The not dying at the ICU thing is biblical, in the book of revelation when apocalypse happens people are no longer able to die.

    This movie while fine, I feel this would’ve work as an hour episode of an anthology series by Guillmero Del Toro
