Large North American deer with big antlers.
Native Americans called them "Wapiti," or "Ghost of the Forest." We know them as elk. Elk are ungulates, which means mammals with hooves. They spend their summers in the mountains where food is abundant and the temperature is cool, then move to lower elevations in the fall when snow arrives. They are herbivores (plant eaters), and have a special four-part stomach that can digest grasses, shrubs, tree limbs, and bark. Each spring, bull elk begin growing antlers from bony bumps on their heads. Antlers act as a cooling system during the summer and protect them when they jostle with other elk.
